This to some may sound really stupid but hear me out.
Under our new ownership, what is happening off the pitch is sounding amazing so far, something that I didnt think I would see happening at Rovers in my life time. I just Listened to the interviews from Lee Atkins and the other 2 who just joined us. It made me think how much change off the pitch at Rovers will take place in the next 2 to 3 seasons. UWE, the acedamy, commercially, scouting network and I could go on. Exciting times! It has only been a couple of weeks since the al-Qadi family took over the club and I already see our clubs image look so much more professional and I can see the foundations taking shape for us to be a potential sleeping giant in the football league.
Of course, we all want promotion this season and to see us rise up the leagues. I want that too. But for me, I think promotion THIS season is too soon for Rovers. I know we cant pick and choose when we can get promoted but for me, I think the club would benefit more if the club win promotion next season. We would be in a better position off the pitch to cope with the demands from on the pitch.
We have seen and heard Wael al-Qadi and Steve Hamer numerous times say they only just walked through the door and havent even got their feet under the table yet. I think letting them settle in and be able to assess the needs of every element at the club is really important. Finishing 8th will be a good finish for our first season back in the football league. Darrell can then really attack League 2 next season with a stronger team and hopefully get promotion too. Then in my eyes, the shape of the club regarding off the pitch matters would put set us up nicely to be able to compete and attack League 1.
I may not be making much sense or explained myself very well. I know some will massively disagree with what I have put and thats fair enough. But we all were very upset about getting relegated to the Conference. I believe that was a blessing in disguise. We took a big step backwards to take the club forward. Similarly, I think missing out on promotion this season will also be a blessing in disguise and to some of you it will look like a backwards step. But in the long run, I honestly think it will help take the club forward quicker and in a stronger fashion.
Just my thoughts.

I fail to see how getting promotion can been seen as anything but a positive thing.
If we think we can't cope with the demands of League 1 with the new owners in place we should probably give up now.

I do get where you are coming from, and there is some sense there...
I think with the previous regime, promotion would almost certainly have resulted in a quick relegation again, which would have been very damaging (as we saw after the 2007 promotion).
With the new owners, who knows. I suspect we would be ok actually. We would need an influx of players to stay up permanently though...
Remember, promotion would bring potentially higher gates, better sponsorship.
I think we should be aggressive and go for every promotion opportunity we can.

Utter rot, in my opinion.
Try and win every game, finish as high as you can. Anything else is bulls**t.

I think I understand your thinking but whilst there is a kind of logic in it when you say get promotion next year football doesn't work that way. We couldn't be guaranteed to go up next year even if we spent millions. Next year I'm sure others will spend money to go up. We have to get promotion when we can, how many promotions have we had? Not many so let's go for it now and then build for the next season wherever we are. UTG!

There is an argument that says you are probably better off as a club in all respects doing well in a lower league than struggling in a higher one. But, even if I bought that it doesn't apply here. There's no real reason why we shouldn't go up and do well.
Nevertheless this does highlight one thing - if these people are for real then we don't need to be in a massive rush to do everything at once. Absolutely no reason why you can't build from League 1 though.

Thanks for your replies. Im glad that some understand where I am coming from.
To those who cant see what I mean, for the record, if we won promotion this season I would be delighted and over the moon, I really would. But there is a part of me thinking its too soon. I just think with all the great things going on off the pitch, the rewards that it can bring on the pitch, we need to learn how to walk before we try to run with it. Patience. Good things come to those who wait.
Again, just my thoughts. I am often wrong apparently.

I too can see where you are coming from, with our last board I would feel the same as you, however!, we are a different club now, the type of people being employed are professional big hitters, they will strive and thrive if we somehow manage to go up, methinks Wael will not be overjoyed to spend a few years in L2, and whilst he is very humble, I can imagine behind closed doors he already can see us in L1.

I see what you are saying but with Wael's cash and so many players being out of contract come the end of the season, there's a real opportunity to build a stronger team ready to take on League One and do well.

Can't see the point in building another team next season to get us out of League 2 when this one is good enough. Whether this season or next we're going to have to strengthen to stay in League 1 anyway. I'd rather have a couple of seasons in League one building momentum for an assault on the Championship than yet another season in this awful division. Third tier is our traditional place and doesn't feel at all as bad as being in the fourth tier.

This question how ever well intended does frustrate me.
I believe that you have to go for promotion in whatever division you might be in.
With the new regime they would build on what we already have, which is what a lot of clubs have already demonstrated in the past - successfully.
Yes we are ready as we would add to what we already have - simple's.

I think this very much demonstrates what the previous board has done to us. We have lowered our expectation so far that many now feel that promotion would be problematical but nothing builds confidence & success as winning and gaining promotion. There are many examples of this and teams have gone on to gain successive promotion. Look back and see what Wimbledon did and they didn't exactly have a team littered with big name signings. Why should we not allow, ourselves the opportunity to dream and emulate the crazy gangs ethos ? No, I believe that promotion is nothing but a positive thing and I think we are only really lacking the midfield players to achieve that and do ok in league 1. If an 82 er read this then they would certainly enjoy it and it is very much how we have been conditioned to feel. That's how I see it in anycase. I want promotion every season but I am happy with a team that gives its all. What many forget is that this is supposed to be entertainment and, lord knows, we've had our fair share of watching teams that have very little to none of that.

Not good enough at the moment. Are we the 4th best team I the league I don't know. I went to Portsmouth it could have finished 10-1. Are midfield need to smarten up, bit slow and think some players are found out against better opposition.

Obviously I hope we go up. Though I wouldn't fancy us home and away against Portsmouth or Accrington. One thing though - in terms of expectation management. Should we be promoted there will be a problem reigning in some fans who would be demanding an immediate assault on promotion from Div 3. The new owners have a long term strategy about slowly building the Club from it's foundations (quite literally with regard to the new stadium). So if we don't go up - I don't think that constitutes a problem. But I still hope we go up... UTG.

Ready, I am. We have been down here too long. Frankly, our ambition shouldn't be consolidating in this poxy league. Rarely, but it does happen, back to back promotions. You can try and adapt to the division above, once promoted and if done well enough (us this year) who knows where you find yourself. I think for half of this season we haven't been in form, but we are still in a play off position. I hope we hit form anytime soon and with a dozen or so games to go, who knows, Portsmouth or Accys home and away, I'd take our chances if we find some good form.

no point in going up unless we stay there. Or go even higher? I think that may well be the ultimate plan. I can't believe that the new owners have purchased the club to continue watching League Two football in a sooper-dooper new stadium, with all of the commercial outlets up and running, and all the club's distinguished new employees sat in their executive boxes on a Saturday afternoon. Naw, it don't sound right to me.
