Big yayy for me. Some have said at 11am, some pubs aren't open on Glos Rd.
Heard a rumour they may be moving in next to betfred. It's only a rumour so please don't shoot messenger..

No thanks. There's not enough pubs on Glos Road as it is, adding a Wetherspoo will mean there'll likely be fewer in the future.
Surely the Anchor does a passable-enough Wetherspoo impression for anyone on Glos Road who can't bare to be away from their identikit soulless stale-beered local Wetherspoo for more than a few hours?

Crikey - the locals would rather have a Sainsburys or football ground on their doorstep than a Wetherspoons!
Radice and her fellow Gloucester Roaders would have appeal after appeal!!!

I do think people can be a bit snobby about a Wetherspoons. Admittedly some are soul destroying places, but I have also been in a few that are absolutely fine.

Bet the owner of the franchise or whatever of the students' bars would be up for it, plus many others. Plenty of students for the extra bar staff apart from the long holidays. Anyway back to Glos Rd, Wetherspoons are getting better and some fans would drink/eat there; some of the pubs on Glos Rd are a little tired, but being tribal fans may stay loyal Some pubs will close due to lost custom to Wetherspoons, and, should Rovers move, further lack of income as I'm sure the 23+ matches provide dosh to keep some going.

The student union runs the bars at UWE at the moment.

Agreed.
New Spoons opened here in Portishead last week - The Posset Cup. Not everyone's cup of tea but a decent offering and the new one here looks ok structure/atmos wise. Also, employing a good number of people.

I say yes please. There are too many pubs serving drink at rip off prices on Gloucester Road so we could do with a pub in this area serving drinks at prices the average Joe like myself can afford. I don't know why the folk of Bishopston think they are more "supreme" beings than anybody else and in their words "a establishment of such sorts would be a catastrophe" - bollocks!

Radice was hosting a childrens party in the Oak after the Moracambe game (dressed all in red too), so i'm guessing she wouldn't be happy with a spoons threatening her local?

Opposers: "increased noise and anti-social behaviour"
Err, this is a Wetherspoons not a nightclub and you live near one of the busiest roads in Bristol. Deal with it or move.

Deal with it or move. yeah, but it's a bit low rent for their artisan, bohemian lifestyles etc, etc that Sainsbury's was going to ruin or something

I'm not a massive fan of Weatherspoons but I am confused by people saying that it could threaten 'all the good pubs' on Gloucester Road. What good pubs? I'm always massively underwhelmed by the quality of the pubs on Gloucester Road given its reputation. The Annex (which doesn't really count as Gloucester Road) is good and will not be threatened by a Weatherspoons, the Golden Lion is a reasonable music venue - if any of the rest of them close I can't say I'd be overly bothered. They noticeably lack both character and quality. A consistent dissapointment. It's one of the things that slightly baffles me about people who bang on about protecting the Gloucester Road - even on their own terms it really isn't all that good. I must blink and miss all those vibrant independent shops and local pubs. To me it's largely full of fairly middle of the road takeaway places, a smattering of coffee shops, rather too many estate agents, slightly overpriced restaurants, characterless boozers and charity shops. It's nice enough but we're not exactly talking about Greenidge Village here.

I totally agree, the Gloucester Road is far too overrated. A road that big is bound to have pretty much everything you could want on it, doesn't mean the bars/pubs are any good though!! (and they aren't)

Nothing else matters besides the Sportsman.
What a place.
