Is his name pronounced to rhyme with whale/rail I thought it was 2 syllables Wah - ill or Wah-eel When Steve Hamer said it, he pronounced it wile. I would hazard a guess that he must have got it right. As someone with a strange surname, it's one of those things you just get used to. I would get a bit p155ed off when younger but I can't be bothered to correct people now. I would guess that Mr Al Qadi is not one to be correcting people but that people would ask beforehand.

He said himself that's it's pronounced the same way as Gael in Gael Clichy

He said himself that's it's pronounced the same way as Gael in Gael Clichy Yes he did, but it's actually Gaël Clichy. The diaeresis over the letter e implies that the name Gaël should be pronounced as two distinct syllables i.e. with a stop in the middle of the word. Is that what he meant, I wonder? That would tally with the audio clip that LincsBlue posted.

He said himself that's it's pronounced the same way as Gael in Gael Clichy I thought that was odd. It'd have made more sense to say "Hello, my name is Wael".

Why is this important anyway? Are we composing a song already and need rhyming words?

Whale, snail, tail, sail, mail, rail, dale, fail, hail, pale, jail. Plenty to work with there.
Hope he doesn't bale (think any number of rich investors that got cold feet) Or end up in jail (think Thaksin Shinawatra)

that must, surely, be a forum first I doubt it; it's a common enough word: what else would you call it? On the other hand, who or what is Gael Clichy, and how is he, she, or it, usually pronounced? EDIT: Google check makes me feel rather daft. As in 'oh, Gael Clichy'. For some reason I was trying various strangulated pronunciations and assuming an Irish folk singer or some such. I haven't been well.

That's the Wael, uh-huh, uh-huh I like it, uh-huh, uh-huh Followed by Wael meet again, don't know where, don't know when.............. great to hear Vera Lynn drifting out melodically from the blackthorn. Incidentally - really enjoyed yesterday's new song 'we're richer than you, we're richer than you; Bristol city we're richer than you'
