Didn't we win lots of 2-1's and 1-0s with late goals in the Gerry Francis promotion year?

In one of our struggling seasons I remember scoring 2 goals in last min at Cheltenham and torquay. In our promotion season we won many points in last 10 mins

Surely you can only come to that conclusion if you've compared our average scoring times against other teams in the league who have scored a similar number of goals.

We've dropped points late on more than once as well... It's football!

Plus, you can"t really win points at any other time can you? If you regularly storm to a 3 goal lead in the first half, do you win the points then, or when you defend like crazy in the second half? Mind blown.

Well if you read the article you'll see I've worked out that Exeter was probably the only time we conceded in the last few minutes to give away points this season. I remember a few seasons ago, when we lacked a goalscorer, once we went 1-0 down you could almost knew the game was over!

I think this is a fair point - better sides tend to score more late goals because they have players on the bench that can come on and make a real difference, I think we have that this season.

But it seems we're consistently bad between the 60th and 71st minutes.

Or do better teams score more late goals because they score more goals generally? I seem to remember the sign of a good team was one that can go 1-0 up and kill the game.

We have a very fit team. Do fitness levels come into it ?

Other than late goals, what evidence is there our team are any fitter than other teams?

I enjoyed reading the original article, but I think faggotygas is right. So I decided to do the comparison. The results bear out buckrippers' argument. To date, Rovers have scored 38 goals. So have Wimbledon, Notts County and Luton. Rovers have scored later than the 80th minute in 12 matches. The other three clubs have managed that feat on 7 (Wombles), 3 (Notts) and 6 (Luton) occasions, respectively. As buckrippers implied, Rovers - in scoring late goals - have turned 6 draws into wins, and one losing position into a draw, thereby gaining thirteen "late extra" points. Ade Azeez scored after 82 minutes for Wimbledon to give them a 2:1 win over Exeter; the same player scored very late to equalise against Wycombe. Three extra points gained. Liam Noble edged Notts 3:2 ahead of Luton right at the end of the game; again, the same player scored the Magpies' fourth goal in the last minute against Newport's three. Four extra points gained. Finally, Luton pinched a point on the opening day at Accrington with a late goal from Jonathan Smith; Exeter conceded a late Paul Benson goal just before Christmas to lose 3:2. Three extra points gained.

Afraid so, mate, and I did suggest something like that might happen because Plymouth are pretty good at playing until the final whistle too. I can't be bothered to work it out but only recently I remember they were trailing 1-0, only to come back and win 2-1 late in the game...
