Another local lad slips the Rovers/City scouting network ? Jack Butland (Stoke City) and Ashley Barnes (Burnley) two from Somerset we missed out on previously.
Weston-s-Mare AFC are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Sky Bet League One side Barnsley for the transfer of Brad Ash for an undisclosed fee.Brad has been developed by Weston-s-Mare Football Club having joined the club at 16 years old. He broke through as a regular this season, under Ryan Northmore who also coached him in the youth team. This season Brad has scored 14 goals and has set the National League South alight including a hat-trick against St.Albans.
Weston Director of Football, Ryan Northmore said “Brad has been excellent to work with, he fully deserves his chance in League One and he is a shining example of what can be achieved for our academy players. We have a partnership with Churchill Academy and we are already planning for the next ‘Brad Ash’ to break through.” Brad played in the Conference Alliance Youth League for Weston-s-Mare AFC and progressed through the youth team and into the Senior squad. Brad is one of ten senior squad players to take that route, more than any other club at this level.
Ash said “I’ve been given the chance to play at National League level and it’s given me the platform to move into Professional football. I’ve worked under Ryan for three and a half years and it’s been a fantastic experience. I have loved my time at Weston, the fans have been great to me and my team-mates have been great. I’m proud of my time at Weston but the opportunity to play in League One was too good to turn down.”Weston AFC have set up to produce players locally to represent the team. They have an academy which has supported the first team tremendously well and the partnership with Churchill Academy is flourishing the plans are in place to produce the next Brad Ash.

Barnsley? I thought that he'd signed for us. Oh well, as you were.

We've hardly been the most attractive of propositions these last few seasons to attract players of that quality. If he's seen to be of League 1 quality then he's either beyond our reach or we wouldn't have been part of that players development plan.

But even so, Barnsley? For goodness sake, are they a better proposition than us at present? To answer my own question, it would appear so . . . for the present at least.

A nice club and friendly bunch of fans were Barnsley when I last went there, had a brass band playing tunes outside the ground, lots of there fans coming up asking why I was there as I went in the home end for a non Rovers game and was in blue and white quarters. Going to the local pub after was good fun too as the sh!t were on TV and all the Barnsley fans were cheering on whoever they were playing along with me, of course

Seriously, who'd let their 16 year old son move to live in Barnsley??

We can't hold on to some of our own youngsters, that sign for other clubs, let alone sign others. One of the reasons why we need the Uwe, so we can afford to set up other better facilities and networks.

Well done to WSM for taking the lad on as a 16 year old. And lets not condemn BRFC, he obviously impressed the Barnsley scouts and/or the coaches on trial, but I expect several other clubs took a look and didn't pursue an interest and Rovers could have been one of them for all we know. Having said that, I don't think we've been that great at scouting since Gary Penrice left, though in fairness to Darrell Stuart Sinclair and Matty Taylor had never played in the League, and are now regular starters with us.
