Rose tinted here as well.

I find this team distinctly more likeable than any we've had in a while. I think that's because there are quite a number of players in it for whom this represents their best (and possibly only) shot at establishing successful careers. In other words for a lot of our players this is likely to be the high point of their careers and you can see it in their body language. In the recent past we have had too many who have had their moment and are on their way down and, even though most will be trying their best and nobody is mailing it in deliberately, the fire isn't really there anymore. It takes a certain type of person to keep up that same level of intensity after they know they have reached their peak - I think that's only human nature really. We had too many comfort zone players - I don't mean that they were lazy or that they didn't care, just that the burning, desperate desire that raises individuals to their very best had gone and that reflected in the team. Nothing wrong with a few of those guys but I think a team is much more likeable if it is made up of a core of players with something to prove to themselves.

I agree, players like Sinclair,Taylor and Leadbitter have really taken their chance and you can see they love it when they play. Also after last season when supporters stuck with the club through the dark days I suppose there is a bit more of a bond between the players and supporters ?. I would love to see this group of players get promotion, being realistic 3rd tier football would be the limit for most of them and probably for the club as well.

That's why I think DC was spot on in maintaining most of the Conference-winning squad despite the looming doubt about whether they'd be able to perform at a higher level or not. Teamwork and spirit like this is something we've lacked for a looooooong time. It's like when I came across those YouTube videos of the squad playing FIFA and having a good time; I kept wondering, "what if they put the 2013-14 squad there?" like, imagine O'Toole with the controller in hand, a faraway look in his eyes, while Clarkson awkwardly tried to make a joke to make the other players speak up.
(I know it mustn't have been THAT bad, but that's how much I rate our current team in comparison)

You can see the likes of Sinclair busting a gut, to prove to themselves that they`re good enough to be playing in the football league.

Yep. I've only been a regular since about 2000, so I've only had brief glimpses at players who are actually desperate to make something of themselves; I though players with talent but no application were the norm. This squad has its limitations, but taken over all its a breath of fresh air.

Nothing wrong with a few of those guys but I think a team is much more likeable if it is made up of a core of players with something to prove to themselves. Agree completely. Good post and so true. Last season they created something and kept going and going, caught up Barnet and just failed to come top and in the final at Wembly I felt it was more about who wanted it most and mental strength to recover from the first half hour. DCs attention to detail also important but as you say it's great to see players proud to wear the quarters and the happiness they all have when they win. Of the older players you could never question Mansell's or Macca's endeavours and I think it is infectious. Our midfield always looks better when Mansell is bossing it. Perhaps not as talented as Lines but def more committed IMO. Sinclair, Taylor and Leads have been great signings who might have thought they had missed out but now is their time and they know it. It's why I've said that when it comes to getting players in they must buy into the team ethic and how we play. Gaffney looks as if he does and as if he really wants to be here, has something to prove. Not sure about some of the names mentioned as possible targets. I think it shows in how some of the clubs like Notts Co and Cambridge who seemed to be breaking the bank with signings in the summer have been slow starters. It's only December so they might come good but I wouldn't swap our few signings for all theirs. So well done the players and DC. UTG!
