When you come away from playing an in form Exeter you should come away delighted with a draw so the fact we came away disappointed with a draw and feeling totally robbed shows just how well the team played.I honestly felt that we were so much the better side that Exeter must have been embarrassed to come away with a point. There is little doubt that they are a good side in possession and their defenders are comfortable on the ball unlike ours. Particularly first half Harley looked a very good midfield player but overall we wont the midfield battle and our defence on the main played well. Our attack looked dangerous and for once we actually hit the target with most efforts we had and only an excellent goalkeeping display stopped a rout. We were that good!!¬
Nicholls 8 Brilliant handling on a very difficult pitch/conditions.Made one good save from a free kick but his main quality was the way he left his line and collected so many balls through. Ok they were overhit in the wind but it would have been very easy to stay on the line and those balls would have been dangerous. There were a few routine saves but even they were more dangerous because of the wind and the wet conditions. which are a goalkeepers nightmare. I really feel that had Mildenhall been in goal we woul;d have lost that game. There are ares of goalkeeping where Nicholls is excellent.
J Clarke 6.5 For me he does give opponents too much space but that apart he played pretty well and was very unlucky not to score when hitting the bar. He cleared up a few dangerous situations and like the whole of the side played his part in a good Team Performance.
Lockyer 8. A much better performance than last week. He looked composed and classy in everything he did and like his two central defensive partners he snuffed out the danger and stopped things happening.
Parkes 9 MOM A tower of strength in defence. Thankfully back to his very best particularly a couple of tremendous blocks when it looked like the Exeter player had beaten him and had a clear shot at goal. He brought the ball out brilliantly and looked composed and polished throughout. It is ironic that having defended so well as a unit thoughout the goal that Exeter scored to rob us was mainly down to poor defending by both defenders and midfielders. It really showed up the faults in DC's tactics that see us lying so deep and not actually marking opponents and pressurising the man in possession. It is a shame that it cost us so dearly as the team selection and tactics worked so well for the majority of the game.
Brown 8 A solid performance and defended and attacked well. The goal came down his side but he cannot be faulted because his player moved wide and Brown rightly went with that player. Unfortunately the rest of the defence and Harrison, Ollie Clake and Bodin were not tight enough and ball watched.
Leadbitter8 Performed well and was always willing to attack Exeter at every opportunity. He fully understands the ethic of the wing back position and has the speed to get back to defend when necessary. Unfortunately too many of his crosses were poor and his decision making on passing was mixed. Should he have been substituted I think not.
Mansell 7.5 lead the side by example. held the midfield together and played a lot further forward as a unit with Sinclair and Ollie Clarke. His positioning and tackling was good.
Clarke 6.5 Had a couple of cracking shots that were saved or just wide. Worked hard but tired badly in the last 15 minutes when I think he should have been substituted. Overall though a solid performance.
Sinclair 8 Played with determination and flair and scored a tremendous goal although I felt he should have scored with a chance in the first half. The midfield as a unit competed well and eventually gained control of the territory.ot sure it will work in home games but DC is a master at setting up away from home based on how the opposition play. I feel that at home games he needs to concentrate less on our opponents but set the team up to let the opposition worry about us. I could only really understand the substitution of Gaffney.
Taylor 7.5 What anyone says about him,he is a technically good footballer who holds the ball and lays it off well. Difficult to judge how good he was second half as it was difficult to recognise who was who from behind the goal. Don't know if it was him who scored the disallowed goal. I am sure somebody with better eye sight than me can correct me!!
Gaffney 8 For me he looks a good signing. Led the attack well and was always available to receive the ball and was willing to run at defenders as well as lay the ball off. Brought a tremendous save from the keeper. Looked tired when substituted but tghbat is not surprising given his lack of games and the fact that he put so much effort into a decent first performance. I am sure he will score goals during his stay here.
Substitutes
Easter 5 Involved in the goal both with the past to Bodin and his run across the defence that created a bit of time for Sinclair to finish superbly.
Harrison 5 Not involved much but helped with the goal but could have closed down the player on the equalizer.
Bodin 5 Also involved in the goal.
Crowd 8 Tremendous support again in an awful stadium which matched the weather. Certainly didn't deserve that kick in the teeth at the end but to come away feeling like it was a defeat shows just how well the team performed.
Ref 8 Much better than the usual crap we get . Good referees are those that you don't really know are there. Not sure where he got the 4 minutes from that turned into 5 but tried hard to play the advantage rule and keep every player on the pitch.
DC Have to say he got his tactics and selection right again but hope that he can do the same for home games where we need to push further upfield and get behind the opposing defence more. I feel wingbacks are great away from home but ledave us a bit short at home where the pressure is on us to attack.
It was a real disappointment to drop two points when we so much deserved to win but if we can abtian three points on Tuesday then that will; make up for the disappointment and we can then look on 4 points out of 6 as excellent.
