Blimey, I just almost spat my cornflakes out.
They had a bloke on the sofa, David Goldblatt, talking about modern football. He spoke with great eloquence and passion about the decline in the atmosphere and experience of attending matches these days. He has written an award winning book on the topic.
Toward the end he outed himself as a Gashead. 'I support Bristol Rovers. I pay my fifteen quid to stand there. It's never going to be about winning things, glory, amazing football... So what can it be about? Why are we there? It's about us'.
It was a superb interview long before he name dropped us. What a top man! I think there's a new book going on my Christmas list.

I have 2 award winning Gas books (my mum gave me the awards) but not been on BBC Breakfast. One of them is about how it feels to be a Gas fan on awaydays.
I pay £18 to stand on the Blackthorn (£20 for a stupid Category A game - only 6 of them this seaspn - heh ho) but most of the time cannot afford it.
The reviews of his books are superb & the books sound excellent.

Very rare example of someone who writes about football in a reflective and wide ranging way. The Ball is Round is the best book I've ever read about football and this one sounds like a similar approach. He lived in Bristol for a while and used to go and watch Rovers sometimes.

This is my first ever post on here but couldn't resit as David Goldblatt is a really good friend of mine.
He has just won the William Hill sports book prize, which is why he was on Breakfast T.V this morning.
Just to clarify he has lived in Bristol for about 15 years(still lives here) and stands on the Blackthorn terraces, I think with all the excitement he must have forgotten tickets are £18.00 not £15.00.

Many thanks for the clarification, and keeping the record straight.

I have attended several conferences where David has been a speaker and his presentations are always excellent. He has also written a book about Futebol in Brazil. He lives close to the Mem and has a real affinity to Rovers. I would thoroughly recommend all his books.

Read 'Game of our lives' over the summer - An awesome book. He's written a lot for the Guardian and the Bristol Cable as well.

FAO - Concept The recent edition is the same as the previous one apart from a small preface of 2 pages for American readers. However it is a better quality edition in terms of font size and quality of paper/cover.

Think I'll take a trip into town to visit Waterstones & Foyles next weekend.

On the subject of top geezers in footie, recently - very recently I watched a live premiership match with three others. One of the three was none other than Antonio Conte, former player and manager of Juventus and now manager of the Italian national football team. After a goal was scored he pointed out on the screen where the errors had been made. As well as all the usual questions from us("who was...?" etc), I couldn't resist briefly introducing the subject of BRFC. As I left I asked him for two favours, 1) if Italy play us next year in the Euros, could he please let us win for once ? 2) If he's up for a challenge sometime, could he come to the Rovers and help us out ? Joking aside, he is a really top bloke. Natural, good humoured, interesting without being boastful, and not a sign of arrogance. It was a great pleasure to spend a couple of hours with him. Great guy and a credit to football.

If the true word of legend applies to anyone, it should be applied to Mr Goldblatt..
My fav quote: "I like to stand next to away fans to watch them suffer!"
Classic!
