I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that one of our fans was told by Clarke at the SC EGM that he was considering playing 3-5-2 this season?
I like it as a formation. If nothing else it'll give the other teams we face something extra to think about, as it's not a formation that's used too often in the lower leagues (or in England full stop).
But if we bring in a couple more wingers (which seems to be the plan), then it would seem wasteful to use a formation with wingbacks as our main source of width.

No reason at all we shouldn't be able to play like that. Most teams will only play with two attackers. Why would we need four defenders to cover them? Three defenders & midfielders running their asses off in attack and tracking back to defend too. Loved the three man Chilean defence. I hope Rovers do the same. Attacking football with loads of goals......

It is the same formation Cottrell introduced with good effect when appointed in January and will probably use again next season. Its all about the quality of the wingbacks and in Smith and Brown you should be well suited. What I found is due to the demanding nature of that position e.g. getting back and forward with every passage of play you need suitable backups or replacements or a plan b.

That is exactly what Ollie used to say about 3-5-2 and It's spot on. You need wing backs with a good engine that are good going forward, but also sound defensively. Smith and Brown are ideal IMHO. It's good to have two CB's that can shuffle across covering the spaces when the wing backs go forward, which Parkes and Locker could do comfortably. We also had the 'dogs of war' in the midfield 3 who would just give the ball to Cureton/Roberts/Ellington etc and let them do their thing. Obviously we don't have the luxury of those striking options, but it's a system that could work well. I thought we should have looked to play a 3-5-2 at times last season, and looking at the players we currently have, would be quite happy to see it used next season.

I'd be happy to see us play 3-5-2 as it would bring Alan Gow into things as he could play behind the front two. Playing this formation would mean scrapping plans of getting in more wingers with the search needing to turn to the signing of an attacking fullback/wingback. Gosling can compete with Gow for the attacking midfield role, and it's even a spot where Ellis Harrison maybe more suited to. Mansell and Clarke would be a good duo in the more defensive midfield role and Lockyer would do a good job as the right sided centre half. If the focus was playing this formation i would be looking at signing :
1 Striker 1 Centre Half as 4 would be needed 1 Attacking Full Back 1 Centre Midfielder to Compete With Clarke & Mansell 1 Back Up Goalkeeper

I just would like us to have a team that provided entertaining football. We had some dire times at the end at Eastville but you felt you had been entertained, most of the time. I am not I to the computer games or tactical set ups that some posters seem to obsess upon but I do know that if you provide entertaining football, people then want to come again. That is even more true for kids.

As I recall we tried to play that formation at Wimbledon and came under immense pressure because they attacked us down the wings and our central defence was too slow. We then found it very difficult to change the formation to suit that game.

not given enough time on the ball to build from the back in lower leagues/conference, everyone chasing there asses! nice formation in top flight football where the wingers can drop back and cover from a counter. unfortunately we would still be scratching our heads as to why we never scored, whilst the opposition are showing us how to do against our 3 man defence...!!

----------Mildenhall---------- -----Lockyer-------Parkes----- Smith-------Clarke-------Brown -----Mansell--------Gow------- ------------Taylor------------ -------Brunt------White------- Personally I'd be very happy if that team were to run out for our first fixture, but I still have real nagging doubts that it won't be possible. Unfortunately for us supporters, I can still see at least three of that team not being on the books come the big kick-off. And of course if they do leave, then clearly they will need to be replaced.
