Assume no more player exits:
GK Mildenhall
DL Brown
DC Parkes, McCrystal
DR Smith
DMC Lockyer, Clarke AMC Gow, Mansell
Wings: Gosling, Harrison, Santos
STR: Taylor, White, Brunt.
-----
IMO If we can keep that back 5, we probably have the best back line in the league. Ideally a right sided centre back or convert Lockyer back there full time. Unless I'm missing something, we need more than one more defender as cover, surely?
Something doesn't convince me about Clarke as DMC, but he was looking good the season before last. He was hit hard by our relegation and we may well see something extra next season (I hope). Not convinced about Mansell, but adds some experience in the middle of the park, and in Gow we have potentially the best attacking central midfielder in the league.
Wingers worry me. Santos is lightweight. Harrison is unwanted and badly off form last year. Gosling is young, although I am very encouraged reading Exeter fans' views on him. Maybe another place to add some experience.
Up front I feel like we need an experienced brute. But apart from that, I see plenty in White and Brunt (if we see the Brunt when he first arrived), and Taylor was played out of position at FGR whilte Chester fans loved him (nearly a goal a game).
So... backup GK (Really hoping Mildy stays) Right sided centre back and/or a defensive midfielder if Lockyer moves back there. Fullback cover A winger A forward
Can we get away with 5? That would give us a squad of 20 and the youngsters. DC has talked about using the loan market, any guesses where? One massive positive for me, is that we have a team full of 100%ers (EH excluded at the moment), which will be a very nice change from recent years. And sometimes, that makes a lot of difference.
What do we need to win the league?

A back-up GK - Jonathan Viscosi (Carlton Town) or James Shea (Harrow Borough) perhaps. A left back for competition - maybe Sam Cruttwell (Hastings Utd). A central midfielder - Ashley Sammons (Redditch Utd) perhaps. A centre back - Michael Spillane (Sutton Utd) and Angus MacDonald (Salisbury) would be my targets as both can also cover at RB. A winger - Anthony Cook (Ebbsfleet) or Wayne Brooksby (Guiseley) would be my preferred targets. A striker - trial both Dumebi Dumaka (Heybridge Swifts) and Dan Taylor (Spennymoor Town).

I'd like to start the season with 5 strikers, another youngster in the target man mold (Get lots of trialists in) plus Jamie Cureton to add some experience and he can also do a bit of coaching. I would like an experience spine, Mildenhall, McCrystal, Mansell, Cureton. This will really help the development of some of the younger players. We need a 4th winger and a couple more at the back who have a bit of versatility.
I dont think we will offer a deal to Gow as I dont believe he will get through pre season but may be proven wrong. If he goes we will need a play maker.

DC pre-season & 1st day starting XI looking like this & i will be feeling quietly confident :
---------------------------------------- Mildenhall --------------------------------------------
------ Smith ------------------- Parkes ----------- McChrystal ------------------- Brown ------
----- New RM ------------------ Mansell ------------- Clarke --------------------- Gosling -----
-------------------------------- Brunt -------------- Taylor -----------------------------------
Subs = NEW GK, Lockyer, White, Gow, New Winger.

Mansell won't be considered an AM I wouldn't imagine. I think he'll be the experienced head that sits in the middle of the park.
For me I'd like two wingers, a further creative midfield player (two if Gow doesn't sign), a striker, a defender and a back-up goalkeeper.
Edit: Having seen WCG's post above, I thought it relevant to say that DC's believes playing Gow behind two strikers would be a very productive forward line. He didn't say that's the way he is definitely going to play but I think he will do if possibly can.

For all of the talk about new signings, not much is devoted to a reserved goalie.
This is surely a priority particularly if Mildenhall jumps ship, in which case we'll need two.

I'd be massively concerned about the lack of creativity/goals and getting over-run in the centre of midfield. Mansell's legs aren't getting any younger (2 goals/1 assist last season) and Clarke only has 1 goal/0 assists in 44 appearances during his career so far.

i think d clarkes main focus now will be a wide player more experienced than the ones we have already,a good young keeper and a centre half,i have a feeling dc wouldnt mind getting parkes or brunt off the wage bill and has targets in mind should that happen but i might be wrong.

I dont rate Clarke that much and he was awful under DC the last eight games. Much rather have Lockyer in there. Again dont believe we will see much / any of Gow after his injury

Gow & Mansell can swap depending on whether we are home/away, or looking for the two centre midfielders to sit deep or wanting Gow in there to help take the game to the opposition. I think Ward was obsessed with not wanting the midfield to be over-run hence why he used the 4-2-3-1 and killed the game in the middle of the park. I like the look of the 3-5-2 away from home, but considering we are looking to achieve a top 7 finish and considering we all want that winning habit to return, i think being brave and getting that attacking intent back will have to be the way forward. It might cost us a few games but it will certainly rack up more points than playing for the draw did every week did last season.

Would like a decent creative midfielder plus winger. Think we also need one more upfront

Gow as a central midfielder as part of a two in midfield would be suicide IMHO. When was the last time he played there? He is an attacking midfielder/second striker/no 10 who can also do a fairly ineffective job on the wing.

gow and taylor can play wide midfield or striker and lockyer has proved how versatile he can be,i think thats part of darrell clarkes thinking and it makes sense with a smaller squad that rovers and every team in the conference will have, while using loans when needed,i just think thats the reality.

For those talking about centre midfield pairings, I'm pretty certain DC will want to be flexible with formations, and Gow will often be playing behind a striker or two, or part of a three man midfield.

DC will never play 1 up front, that i do know. If Gow doesn't play as a centre midfielder or and out and out striker, i don't think we will sign him. I'd like to think that at Home against the likes of Dartford & Welling, we would have a good enough defence and holding midfielder to allow Gow to push on a link up with the two strikers.

On the basis of what we have at the moment I would still be looking for 1 Goalkeeper 1 Full back 1 Centre back even with taking Lockyer as a Defender 2 wingers 2 Central midfielders 1 striker Neither Clarke or Lockyer should be first choice midfielders (Lockyer should be a CB)and Santos also is not good enough to be first choice and Harrison I am not convinced will change and will leave.

Last season the defence really was not the problem. I believe we had the 12th best defence in the league. That says it all. Our midfield and attack was incredibly poor. The fact that we have (so far) kept our back our and keeper on board is something to be very positive about IMO.
