Thought it would be good idea to start a thread, and continue, of any funny or memorable anecdotes of away venues we are about to visit?
Or even for some of you to admit you're a virgin at this venue?!
First one went ok, lets to see how this goes..
My first and only visit was 1-1 draw when Santos goal (deflected) earned us a more than deserved result where I think I saw Clarkson's finest game that I witnessed. We made so much noise, so unlucky. Also remember a car pulling out of ground after with reg ST4GS..
Fair play!
Be interested to hear from any account whom was there in our promotion season of 1989/90....apparently that was our first win there since medieval times?!

Went when we drew 0-0 and their child fans were blowing those horrible Zumba horns all game. :-(

The first time I went must have been late 80s with the Presidents Club, even my wife came with me. I had to back to the coach for something after we parked up at the ground, when I got off there was a lad hanging around by the coach looking for autographs (presumably he must have thought it was the players coach)I was suited and booted - and it was about 5 stone ago- he offered he programme and pen , and I duly signed The only win I remember there was on the opening day of the season (May have been Atkins first game in charge)

Steve Elliott's overhead kick?

It was sad to see the stands deteriorate over the years with some still there, but closed because of 'elf and safety. The away fans have changed ends.
One year I was detained checking the quality of the local ale and strolled up through those litter strewn 2 up 2 downs to find only the OAP turnstile open so got in cheaply.

Steve Elliott's overhead kick? We did indeed. It was one week after the JPT Final in Cardiff. I remember the contrast well - from 40,000 supporting to under 400. There was much banter at the tea hut about "where is everyone?". Of course, that was the start of the mad run. The new, galvanised Rovers. We were expecting an "after the Lord Mayors Show" performance but we got a committed fired up professional one instead. As we did for the next ten games too... we were 17th at kick off that day, in mid March. And we all know how it ended. UTG!

Yep,that's Ronnie Wheelan saying,'I say old chap would you like to change your mind over that goal?'Ref was David Hutchison.Dispute was that the free kick immediatly preceeding the goal was in-direct and Liverpool claimed no-one had touched it but pleased to say we saw Alan Smith's glancing header and replays proved us right.Phew!!!!

I attended in 89/90 season, my first ever Rovers away game as 16 year old. Boris scored late on for a 1-0 win. It was a season of great away days. This Saturday I go back to Mansfield first time since then. UTG.

I had ridden down from Scarborough after a Good Friday spent with good friends in various pubs in that town. Left at 11 and only just made kick off. Had bought some flags with me from the JPT final the week before but stewards wouldn't allow me to take them in. The exertions of the previous day's partying together with the ride down caught up with me during second half and I was doing the nodding off, jerking awake suddenly thing..... Can't make this weekend as I'm working away, real shame as its my second closest ground this season

So you can ignore my first post of only seeing us win once there!

Mansfield Town 1 Bristol Rovers 1 (12th October 2013)
Focus on John-Joe O’Toole
At a dark, drizzly Field Mill, Rovers gained a point. Santos (whose equaliser for Rovers in the 82nd minute was heavily deflected by Murtagh), Clarke and Keary replaced colleagues absent through injury or national service. Despite – or maybe because of - these changes, Rovers conjured an inter-passing game that deserved greater reward.
In League Two, central midfielders have a hard time; they’re often either by-passed or rapidly pressed, and don’t often take the spotlight that strikers or wingers attract.
In the following ten segments, each of nine minutes, you can see the raw facts of John-Joe O’Toole’s contribution to the game at Mansfield.
My conclusion is that his game could be characterised as “box-to-box” (have you ever noticed how he’s often “in-shot” both when we score and when we concede?) and he was a captain without armband. He didn’t often give the ball away. His high percentage of successfully completed passes included a lot of safe ones, but a minority were “progressive”. In my opinion, that’s the right way to do it. His marking, when defending set-pieces, could have been better, but he got through a huge amount of work.
