Oh Christ, a fun thread. Steady on.
Now ever since I was a young boy my Dad would wax lyrical about a striker that banged in loads of goals, left for Stoke City and then returned to bang in some more goals. Randall was a bit of a legend.
Now for my generation there was a fat midfielder which, a paper in Lincolnshire called the "biggest waste of money since the Millenium Dome". We all know what the fat midfielder did next. Make no bones about it, Rickie has just played in the World Cup as well.
So, who's better? I can't see how Randall can be, but I'm sure those between 45 and 60 will tell me he obviously was as he scored some goals against Southampton.
Piffle.

Loved them both TBH and was lucky enough to watch them both perform for the Rovers.

Rickie is without doubt the better player,Paul would only really beat Rickie on pace and everthing else would go Rickies way. Well everything except games played,PR played many more Rovers games than RL,although we can't hold that against Rickie. Obviously both true Rovers greats and Paul is still my favourite ever Rovers player. In my time I can't remember a player lifting the Eastville crowd like Paul Randall (i'm sure many before my time can remember plenty of other greats).I chanted with others "Randall for England" and meant it! We were really up against it,the season of Spurs 9 Rovers 0 eg and then Bobby Campbell (manager cause he was the cheap option, but I loved his style,God bless him ) started to play Paul Randall. He started to score goals and linked up very nicely with Bobby Gould. It seemed (not entirely factual) that we would beat anyne at Eastville and then get stuffed away.Randall led the line and we saw some fantastic games (at least at Eastville ).I remember Stoke being spanked 4 1 and Blades by the same score. Those of us lucky enough to of been there will never forget the 5 5 v Charlton. This particulat game may of been the season after,i'm not sure (me ead!) but the the score line went 1 3 Ath,2 4 Ath,3 5 Ath and then Rovers got it back to 5 5 with I believe Randall scoring from the spot to equalise. We stayed up and it's one of my favourite ever Rovers seasons. When Paul went to Stoke i was absolutely gutted and just couldn't understand why!? I mean it was madness! I can remember Pauls return,in the year of the Eastville fire and relegation. I think his return debut was at home v City (City having just come down from the top division) and i think we were bottom of the table.Randalls return offered hope, but it wasn't enough and we (with City) went from 2nd to 3rd tier in what was a miserable season.Apoligies if any of my memories are not quite as factual as i remember. Paul continued to be a very good player for Rovers,eg "one nil down, three one up etc" Cup game at Ashton Gate. A total hero. I missed a lot of Rickies games as i was away, but obviously he is one of the best players to of ever worn the Quarters. I did attend the JPT semi 2nd leg at the Mem and nearly exploded when Rickie hit the winner. Not that often a player scores and turns into a werewolf through excitement (celebration!). If we were selecting our favourite Rovers team i would select Paul before Rickie, but Rickie is the better player. Imagine a front two of Randall & Lambert. Good Lord above, that would be so good.

That is a really hard one for me, but then sentiment has got in the way! Paul was a boyhood hero of mine, cried when he went to Stoke (I was young!) and vowed never to watch Rovers again, next home match I was there! I never meet another player like him again (as in hero, model professional on and off the pitch) until Rickie joined the club.
I would have to say because Rickie has played for England he is the better, but even saying that no I am going with my boyhood hero!

There's a message/moral there somewhere, for our recruitment for the coming season.

Hard to compare sportsmen from different times..Foreman or Tyson ? for instance. I saw Pauls goals against Saints and the 3-1 city game, but the most important goal he scored ( IMO) was the goal that kept us in the second division, last game of the season at Hull,I was there too,how much was that goal worth I wonder ?....

We've had loads of players that went on after and played for England etc,and some before us. You have to judge them on their time with us,and to me that is PAUL,PAUL,PAUL RANDALL!!!!!!.

The whole 'fat' thing is a bit of a myth really. Found a newspaper article the other day from Wembley 2007, and he's thinner in those pictures than he is now.
Now fitness is a different issue.

I think the fact Randall signed from Western League side Frome Town for £1k and Rickie signed from Football League side Rochdale for £200k has to definitely be taken into consideration.

That sale broke my boyhood dreams as i realised then that rovers were a selling club and would never climb to fame. still hurts!
