After yet another home loss to start the season, it got me wondering about our form at the start of seasons. For as long as I could remember, a draw was a good result to start the season with as we ALWAYS shank it.
So yer tis, since our first relegation to League 2, our record is:
2001/02 Home Win V Torquay 2002/03 Away loss V Torquay (drew first home game) 2003/04 Away win V S****horpe (drew first home game) 2004/05 Away win V Mansfield (drew first home game) 2005/06 Away draw V Barnet (lost first home game) 2006/07 Away Loss V Peterborough (lost first home game) 2007/08 Away draw V port vale (drew first home game) 2008/09 Home loss V Carisle 2009/10 Home loss V Leyton Orient 2010/11 Away loss V Peterborough (won first home game) 2011/12 Away win V AFC Wimbledon (lost first home game) 2012/13 Home loss V Oxford 2013/14 Away loss V Exeter (drew first home game) 2014/15 Home draw V Grimsby 2015/16 Home loss V Northampton
So only 4 wins in 15 years on the opening day, and three of those were away from home.
When playing away first day, first home games do not fair much better - 1 win, the rest draws and losses.
So what to take from this data analysis? Not much, I just knew there was justification for a constant feeling of disappointment at 5PM on the first Saturday of the season at the Mem... For whatever reason.

Fantastic bit of research but other than coincidence it bears no relevance to Saturday's result.

Just a little stat to make you think, in 2001/02 when we beat Torquay 1-0 under Gerry Francis we recorded two more wins, so three out of three, if we hadn't we'd have had back to back relegations and straight out the league, instead of Halifax (one team relegated then)

Atkins first year we were unbeaten in nine or something like that weren't we? 8 games unbeaten, including Carling Cup win against Brighton.

Occasionally I'm a stuck record and pre-season build up is one of my pet subjects, we rarely have a full and stable squad with a few games playing together before the season starts. After Bungle missed another 1 on 1, being one down is not the first time to bring on Geoffrey. However I trust DC to get it right.

I don't think this pre-season we were helped by injuries to Mansel, McChrystal & Puddy plus if Taylor or Harrison had scored we'd have all been happy this weekend!

I doesn't help that all the players that scored goals in pre season were either on loan, on the bench with no hint of an appearance or come of the bench fairly late on.

At least we've got a "nothing to lose" game against Birmingham on Tuesday to get over it.

So Alfie Potter remember his superb goal for Oxford at the Mem on the opening day a few years ago ..he left the pitch another winner ....what a lot of Cobblers
One Rovers player Chris Lines played at AFC Wimbledon in that famous 3-2 ...and was promptly sold within 2 days ! Look what happened to him
