Bear in mind with loan player we are not paying all their wages, there is usually a split with the parent club, or a couple of weeks (or more) when they come free (apart from travel & hotel costs). You have to ask what their salary expectations are (or what their agents advise they should be) when they are released. You also have to consider the clubs salary policy, and other signings. If we had to sign Lines as one of our higher eearners then that made sense, and I'm pretty sure Sinclair's new contract will be better than the one he was on last season.
So the issue could be whether it would be worth signing LDV on an expensive (and probably two-year)contract based on some good and some indifferent performances while on loan? If we did it may mean less opportunity to strengthen the squad if there is a need during the season. On the whole Darrell used the loan system pretty well last season. Don't get me wrong I liked LDV, but I do think DC has made the right call.
