Has Glyn Jones left Newport County then ? For the younger readers Jones was our goalkeeper when we were thrashed 9-0 at Tottenham in 1977. He was dropped to the Reserves and his first game back with them the following week was a Football Combination match at Tottenham !

Great to see that we've still got some Welsh gems coming into the team

I HATE you! I was 10 years old and that was my first away game! I cried all the way home, thank god I lived in Lockleaze and nobody wanted to talk about football for a few days.

I think many of us were in shock that miserable October day. At least we stayed up that season in Div 2. Ironically Spurs only got promoted on a goal difference +9 better than Brighton

As Curly Wurly alludes to, it was well remarked at the time that it was Glyn Jones who kept the scoreline down to just the 9.
This match was exactly one week after Bobby Gould's debut in a 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Eastville - Gould scoring a hat-trick inside the first 25 minutes.
I used to watch a lot of reserves games back then and we had a conveyor belt of top goalkeepers: Jim Eadie in the first team, followed by Martin Thomas, and Glyn Jones always looking promising for the reserves, then Phil Kite and Tim Carter not long afterwards.

I forgot to add that the MoTD cameras came down to Eastville for the return fixture later in the year, doubtless looking for another thumping. It was much closer that time, with Spurs winning 3-2.

I didn't know you lived in Lockleaze, that's where I originate. Had a quick drive around Gainsborough Square the other week after arriving early for a night game and decided to do a bit of reminiscing, was last there previously in 1962 ! Happy days though, love living in South Wales but as they say "you can take the boy out of Bristol, but you can't take Bristol out of the boy"

Commentator Motson: "Without wishing to take anything away from Tottenham Hotspur, it has to be said that Bristol Rovers have looked a very poor side".
Just over three months later, Rovers held eventual FA Cup winners - top-tier Ipswich Town - to a 2:2 draw at Eastville, a game Rovers would probably have won if the referee had not ruled out a late Bobby Gould goal for offside, the ball having been played by an Ipswich defender. At least Bobby Robson (then Ipswich manager) had the good grace - in an interview immediately after the Cup Final - to recall that they had been lucky at Rovers that day.
Rovers finished that season (1977-78) safely in 18th place *.
* Bristol Rovers F.C. A Complete Record 1883-1987. Mike Jay.

We changed manager in those 3 months and the team had a new spirit, that was probably my favourite season supporting Rovers, winning the last game at Hull to stay up with Paul Randall scoring and a train full of our supporters there my best Rovers memory.
We had different supporters then,I don't remember Glynn being criticised for the 9-0,contrast that with some of todays lot trying to blame Puddy for the Dover result.
