Cautious optimism from me after listening to DC on Radio Bristol. Luton/Mansfield fans warned us against FL journeyman dropping down, that we need to go for hungry non-league players. Too often in the past I would try not to pre-judge, but sign as the players we signed were rubbished by their former clubs (such as Bond), only to watch it come true most of the time. Or players that just wanted to come to us just because of the £££.
Well, after the positive comments about a player we would of been happy signing in league two (White), I'm very happy to read what other fans are saying about Matty Taylor. We have a good balance and options up front now.
------------
Chester Fan: Our offer probably wasn't too hard to resist in terms of the money. Many were hoping to have him back here (including myself) but in reality he would have taken up too much of our budget and it would have been a bit of a risk for him given no-one has any idea how we will do next season.
As I mentioned in the other thread about this, great signing for Bristol Rovers. Best striker in non league. Rovers are going straight back up.
------------
FGR fan: quality player imo who we never consistently managed to get the best out of. Matty needs to play off the shoulder to be at his best, as he did at Chester and for England C, whereas we often used him as a target man, despie his stature, under Hockaday and out wide under Pennock.
Although he can actually do a decent job elsewhere, for me he's an out and out goalscorer who needs to be allowed to get on the end of through balls or in the box and given good service, rather then playing with his back to goal which he did far too often for us. Use him properly and he'll be prolific.
About to be joined by James Norwood apparently.
We're getting raided.
------------
Wrexham fan: He's only 24? Seriously? Great signing.
------------
Lincoln fan: good signing for Rovers.
------------
FGR: To be fair to the lad we played him out wide or just played long balls up to him. If you play him right one of the best strikers in this league but we didn't. He has the best touch I've seen at this level but very much a confidence player.
Good luck and all the best to Matty, i'm sure he'll do well and score a lot of goals for them.
------------
FGR: good luck Matty. Hope we find someone as skilled as you in taking and holding the ball. Some will only appreciate what you have to offer when they realise what a gap you have left.
------------
Chester: This link shows that we were "in for him" but, realistically, did any of us think that we would actually get him? League clubs were interested because, as we know, he would be a great addition to any lower league team.
------------
Looking forward to seeing who DC brings in for the midfield areas now! Will be good to have a team of young, hungry players next season with some pace. Praying our current back 5 stay as we will have quite the team the way things are going.

Your thoughts on him Wes? You seem to have a better non-league knowledge than anyone else on here.

I'll judge him on what he does for us, not exaggerated comments like "great signing" and "best striker in non-league" which he clearly wasn't. Good luck to him.

We have got two decently rated young strikers from other conference teams that I am willing to bet will score more goals for us than Beardsley and Gillespie did last year. Listening to DC I suspect he recommended Taylor for a loan move to us last year, which could of saved us, but JW choose SG instead. He said that MT turned down more lucrative offers to join us and also that we may offer a contract to a wide player at the end of the week. He also said that he wouldn't be rushed on signings and that 2 or 3 more players will probably be signed by the end of June. ,

Don't know either this player or White but I'm getting the impression that there are similar players from all the comments being made. Would that be a fair assumption?

What I find refreshing is these meetings Darrell has before begining the recruitment process, I wonder if someone like Norwood would pass one of those?
It's frustrating that year after year we signed journeymen and only now are we trying to build a young and hungry squad, that said I think because of our "hire and fire" mentality other managers didn't take the risk on these younger players out of choice.

By the end of this week we could have 3 new signings (White, Taylor & Frear (Possibly). Another 2 new players next week & we will go into the first day of pre-season with 5 new faces which imo is an excellent effort. Once we start pre-season it's another 6 weeks before the first kick off and time to bring in plenty of trialists aswell as other players who become available when clubs start to bring in more players and certain individuals become surplus to requirements. DC also said a few weeks ago that he wanted to try and bring in a couple of season long loans which we all know from previous experience come in much later into the summer window. The futures of 4 or 5 senior players still need to be sorted, but DC seems to be someone with a decent plan a, plan b & plan c. This summer the recruitment operation was massive, 10 new players needed and to have half the business done when everyone has only been back working on things for 3/4 weeks means that DC is working well especially if rumours of stuff going on behind the scenes are to be believed.

Yeah, I agree, but when I normally read comments from other fans about a player we have signed they are normally saying what donkey he is.

Big problem is that we seem to have a surplus of strikers but little behind them, if there's no players leaving we now have Brunt, Harrold, White, Taylor & Gow as forwards, but just Clarke & Lockyer in the middle plus Santos if he stays with no LB if Brown leaves.
