"Wally, Wally, Walters, Wally, Wally Walters"
David Fairclough on Mark Walters: "Wally is probably remembered for his step-over trick that he's still foxing players with these days. As a veteran footballer he's fantastic. He just had that step-over, that no matter how much you knew it was going to come, you just didn't know how to handle it. he was effective and certainly Graeme Souness, who brought him to Anfield, was a big fan of his."

One of my all time favorites, lucky enough to see him in two famous blue shirts, also not an easy time for black players back then, and Wally handled everything thrown at him..literally. Fantastic player.

As with JTS one of my all time best players. I remember him tearing City to pieces, think it was the 2-0 game when Roberts scored? When Ollie signed him from Swindon I thought he was past it, thankfully I was wrong.

I think it was againt Luton and the dodgy Nathan Abbey where he scored a lovely freekick, where he curled it over the wall and into the top corner stanchion. A great goal and a great player, even as a 36/37-year-old veteran. One of my favorites.

Unfortunately Mark never made it onto Rangers Hall of Fame, that decade Gers had some unbelievable players and sadly he missed out. But he's a Legend anyway at Ibrox just as he was later to become at The Mem. Mark was worth the admission price alone to watch.

I may be dreaming this, but didn't he show some interest in managing BRFC at some point?

Thanks for that Wes. As you say so many managers that it is so easy to lose track, hence why I thought that I may well have dreamt it.

I remember a superb display by Walters away at Brentford in December 1999, before our season imploded, where we won 3-0 (although it should have been 6) and Walters, although 35 at the time, was magnificent, as were the whole team. I was working in London then and went to the match with a Cockernee mate who was a Spurs fan. He was watching the silky skills of Walters for a few minutes, and then said: "Bloody hell, that's THE Mark Walters, isn't it! He's still brilliant".
A few short weeks later, it started to go terribly wrong, and incredibly we slipped out of the automatic promotion places and unbelievably even out of the playoffs. The following season was an utter disaster, which put us down into the league we'd now dearly love to get back to.

There was a mention of things thrown at him in an earlier post and Brentford was one place where that happened.

The thing is with Walters is he was a player that just wanted to play football, calling him a journey man is grossly unfair.

Wally always put in a good shift when playing for us, and as for his free kicks......
I don't know what he's doing now, but he could make a living just coaching players how to win (and defend) set pieces. (Still time to fly him out to Brazil Roy!)
