I am sure this was discussed some time ago on the old forum but can't remember for sure. It has long been assumed that the "Red" side of Bristol was South of the River - Bedminster, Ashton, Knowle, Stockwood, Brislington etc. and the Blue side North - Eastville, Fishponds, Horfield, Filton, Easton, Kingswood etc. However what about the western side of the city where there is no "South" of the Avon - Shirehampton, Sea Mills, Avonmouth, Westbury, even Clifton? Are they predominantly blue or red? Has there been a definitive map produced showing the demographics? Of course there are going to be exceptions - i was born and bred in Hillfields, near Fishponds, but some of my school mates supported the dark side for some reason. Just curious. Suppose it all goes back to the good old days when you supported your 'local' team - and if you lived within earshot of the "Eastville Roar" you were duty bound to be a Gashead.

I've always thought we were north and east, they were south and west. But numerous exceptions to the rule, obviously.

Yes, I grew up in Lawrence Weston, but there was a fair mix of Rovers and City fans who I knew (this was late 80s and early 90s).
There are some really interesting exceptions actually - isn't there a pocket of Rovers fans in Knowle West from when a large number of council house residents were moved en masse from somewhere in the north? Brentry maybe?

It's not as simple as Geography. It's more like the difference between "good" and "evil".

Your correct about knowle.I grew up in Horfield, only five mins away from the Mem and lived in north Bristol all my life until eight months ago when I moved to knowle myself.Knowle is a city area but since moving here Ive seen more gas shirts, coat etc.. Here than I thought I would.

I grew up there too, (70's/80's) and their was a strange mix then too maybe cos the 23 bus ran from LW to Lockleaze then I started going with my old man around 78 to eastvillie some of my school friends went over the other place but I think that was to watch the more famous clubs who visited there around that time.

Growing up in Avonmouth & Shire late 70s early 80s I would say the direct train to Eastville weighed the fans in Rovers favour, except for the couple of seasons the s**te were in league 1 (I must've have been a bad kid as for some reason I was taken there in that period, thankfully for some bizarre reason mostly the away end). Since we left Eastville its been much more of an even split. But there are 30 or so going for a meal & reunion for one of the games in Feb (forget which as I'm unable to attend!). We've lost a couple recently with Topper & Kev J having passed on. RIP

As a child growing up in the St Paul's area, I often went with my father on his weekly trips to both Eastville and Trashton. He supported both teams without favouring either, and I believe that his father did so as well. He just enjoyed watching a game of football after a weeks work, there was nothing tribal at all. We always walked to Old Market and caught the football special buses when going south, but always walked the whole way to Eastville.
In the late 1950s we moved to Fishponds, which made the trip to Eastville much easier. He made the journey south by catching a bus (I've forgotten the number though) which went all the way from Fishponds (Straits Parade) to Ashton. Very convenient for him, no connecting buses you see.
It's a funny thing but as I have said my father religiously watched both teams but supported neither, whilst I plumped for the Pirates at a relatively young age, and my brother (to my everlasting shame) took to supporting the other mob.

I'd say BS11 has a fairly even mix that perhaps leans more toward the dark side. I wouldn't describe many of them as anything other than fair weather supporters though.

Moved from Cheltenham to 759 Filton Avenue when I was 4, to live with Grandparents (that's the George pub end). Moved to Shellard Road within 2 years and then ended up in Gayner Road aged 12. Attended Shield Rd Primary and then Filton High. (77-82)
I didn't really have an option!!!
More Gas than Reds when I was there

With regard to Lornes Wesson, as a post war council estate there were a large number of people moved there from slum clearances elsewhere in the city. As a result it was always going to be a bit mixed.
Somerset's interesting - quite a few Gas in Norton/Bath etc whilst it gets more Red the further west/south you go, until you get to Weston, Clevedon etc when some more Blue starts creeping back in. In Wilts, some towns are pretty mixed - Chippenham has a heady mix of Gas, c*ty and Swindle I believe.
Glos tends to be Gas until you get to rugby country, then it's all about Kingsholm.
Anyone is welcome to tell me I'm wrong!
