This is before my time, but does anyone remember this?
"14 May, 1992
Five contractors from Britain, America and Scandinavia are vying for the £80 million multi-sport and leisure complex contract in Severnside near Bristol. The project will provide a new home for Bristol Rovers, which has set up Severnside Sportsworld to develop the scheme with partner Bristol City Council, owner of the 120 ha Hallen Marsh site. Centrepiece of the scheme is an all-seater stadium for between 25,000 and 40,000 people. There will also be a 12,000 seat indoor arena and exhibition facilities. A spokesman for Severnside Sportsworld said the contractors had to submit bids by May 22 and only then would their names be released."

"15 July, 1993
Rival schemes by Alfred McAlpine and Mowlem to build a £50 million stadium for Bristol Rovers have again been put on hold after the developer withdrew plans to site the ground near an industrial estate.Fears voiced by the Health and Safety Executive over a site close to the Rhone Poulenc chemical works and a British Gas plant have forced the re-think by developer Severnside Sportsworld. But a spokesman for the joint venture development company set up between Bristol Rovers and the city council said that three alternative sites were already being considered and the stadium would still be built. However, under the revised plans, the area originally chosen at Hallen Marsh would still be needed to provide the development potential that would secure the funding for the stadium. The spokesman added that the company would be putting pressure on the council to press ahead with the revised plan as soon as possible, and still believe that the football club could be in its new stadium by 1996."
