Like most of the time, I agree with you again Irish.
I am going to watch Real v Liverpool tonight, but it’s not as exciting or interesting as it once was/might have been (or could be).
Obviously at the time I was lot younger, but I just about remember Man United in the Cup Winners Cup in ’91. To me that is far more exciting than the ‘big game’ tonight or the Arsenal match.
Arsenal are a pretty good example. A team that basically won’t ever win the Champions league, that has picked up easy group wins and gets knocked out when they get a vaguely half decent team for the best part of 15 years. Where is the excitement or adventure? The excitement and adventure was watching Arsenal nearly failing to get into the group stages, not watch Arsenal coast to ten pints get to the next round get knocked out and get paid x amount of cash
As you say despite the ‘threats’ the current situation favours a lot of teams. Arsenal are always in the top 4 making a slim attempt at the title and may get lucky one year, but who will care about seeing Arsenal or Liverpool being mediocre 12th placed teams in a European Super League year after year. Not me for sure. The Champions League just about pushes the limit of what I think they can truly get away with and at least it ends up in a knockout final where something exciting might just happen
