An interesting question fans are asking one another concerns budget and whether Rovers could sign decent players on the capital they have. One the one side of the coin we are a club who will comfortably get 5000+ fans, are a 'big' club and can offer professional football. On the other site of the coin we know that the budget has been 'slashed' from league two and so DC has had to compromise on squad size.
You may know that I've follow Dover and so here's an update of their transfer dealings (bearing in mind Dover is a town of 10,000, have just gone pro - which essentially means the players now train twice a week, and the manager Chris Kinnear has always been in the lower leagues whilst combined his job as being scout for West Ham).
Dover has also had to adapt to a higher league. So, based on the first 5 games which were mixed, they have signed these players in the last week:
Defender/Midfielder Tom Bonner from Cambridge (played in all L2 games for Cambridge this season) www.doverathletic.com/index.php?p=news&id=2743 Defender Connor Essam from Crawley www.doverathletic.com/index.php?p=news&id=2746 Defensive Midfielder Solomon Taiwo from Luton Striker Ricky Miller from Luton, who was last season's conference north top goal scorer with 28 goals for Halifax Striker Stefan Payne who scored 38 goals for Hornchurch in the Ryman league last season
Dover now have a better defence and strengthened midfield after 5 games whilst have still got the nucleus of the side that are on the high from last season. Ricky Modeste is out injured but he is far better than the generic footballers Darrell Clarke has signed to fill the squad.
We should be asking has our larger budget, larger club with a manager paid far more (but with far more limitations than Chris Kinnear) got the best deal? I made a large prediction that Dover will finish above Rovers before the start of the season and my money is definitely on Dover after 6 games.

One thing with those signings is where they have signed from all clubs within their locality so haven't had to pay players to move into the area on costly relocation packages and more chance of players moving if they didn't have to move. This is where we have come unstuck is signing players from Torquay, fgr, Salisbury. The teams Dover have signed from are Crawley and Luton just around the m25 and Cambridge not a that far either.

I don't think the budgets over the last few seasons have been anything like as good as Box 1 'tell us'.

Chances are dover will be able to recruit players coming out of the other London based clubs too and we have to pick up the scraps from elsewhere
