Excellent performance. Hard to pick between Ward and Aquilera for MoM.

Great result and the evenly contested game was a credit to L1 football. B Zamora shone on his debut, but for me Jack Hunt was my mom, he gets better every game, Jed Ward also a star performer.

Excellent defensive display Conteh Ctama Wilson and Hunt along with Aguilera were very good.
Matt Taylor scored for Cheltenham on his debut as sub but lost 3 1. Aaron Collins set up Bolton Wanderers equaliser against Barnsley.

Match Stats: Exeter 1 BRFC 1 - Possession: 58% - 42% - Shots: 11-6 - On Target: 6-2 - Corners: 6-2 - Referee: Will Finnie - Attendance: 8,085 (1,137 away)
Bristol Rovers atoned for a 1-0 home defeat by Exeter City in League One 11 days ago by winning by the same scoreline at St James Park thanks to Brandon Aguilera's stunning debut goal.
Exeter started brightly and Vince Harper shot low at Jed Ward from an angle, but Rovers went in front when Aguilera, signed on loan from Nottingham Forest this week, smashed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards, although Exeter were aggrieved that the referee clearly got in the way and blocked off midfielder Reece Cole just prior to the goal.
Harper then struck the angle of post and bar with a tremendous curling effort for Exeter before goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo made a brilliant save to deny Chris Martin.
Jack Aitchison dragged a shot just wide of the near post at the start of the second half for Exeter, but the best chance came when Aitchison sent Sonny Cox through on goal, but his finish was poor and easily saved by Ward.
Exeter started to get on top with Cole forcing Ward into another good stop and then the midfielder saw a free-kick deflect off the wall before crashing back off the crossbar, but Rovers held on to take the points.

we last kept a clean sheet which is 12 games since we managed that feat at Carlisle on 11 November.

Watched the goal again after MT mentioned the role the referee played in our goal.
What a block he made on the Exeter defender, well played ref!

Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Exeter: by Daniel Hargraves.Jed Ward - 9 It's fair to say that the goalkeeper is a huge reason for Bristol Rovers' victory. A number of huge saves in the second half kept his clean sheet in tact while his distribution and commanding of his defence was superb too. Near-perfect from the academy product. i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9076892.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_3549646.jpgJames Wilson - 8 (above) A real leader at the back. It's no coincidence that since his return Bristol Rovers have conceded just one goal and picked up four points. Got his body in the way when necessary and tried to help out where he could to get any forward moves initiated. Tristan Crama - 7 Generally looked his very comfortable self and got his body in the way in some crucial moments but was bailed out on a few occasions and picked up a yellow card in the second half which denies him the eight. George Friend (off for Harry Vaughan 79') - 8 Solid defensively and organised his teammates expertly. A much-needed experienced head for the Gas who has gone a little bit under the radar this season when he has played. Vital he stays fit for the remainder of the season. Jack Hunt - 8 Looked a lot more like his old self pre-injury with an excellent display up and down the flank. Put a shift in defensively but was one of the Gas' most dangerous players in the final third, whipping balls into the area and also pressing the goalkeeper on occasion. There were a few instances where the right wing-back was the furthest man forward for Rovers and it felt as though he could well come away from Devon with a goal involvement. Kamil Conteh (off for Elkan Baggott 92') - 7 Very tidy in the middle of the park and got his body in the way in some important moments to help keep the sheet clean. Looks incredibly composed too on the ball, especially considering his age. Two impressive first matches in blue-and-white and plenty of room for improvement too. i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9076896.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_3549470.jpgBrandon Aguilera (above) - 9 The Costa Rican must have been dreaming of that moment last night. Signed late on Thursday, linked up Friday, scored a debut worldie on Saturday. Obviously the goal will make the headlines but the midfielder looked incredibly comfortable amongst his new teammates and ran the show at times for the Gas. Really excited to see what he can do for the remainder of the season. Harvey Vale - 8 Pushing a nine in all honesty, the left wing-back was terrific. Showed his quality on the ball and was a livewire up and down the touchline. His crossing was precise alongside a few important interceptions, blocks and clearances as Bristol Rovers showed a more rugged side to their game. Antony Evans - 8 A routine tidy display from the stand-in captain who seemed to be everywhere for Bristol Rovers. Had to show the defensive side to his game a fair bit but it was all worth it for the three points and clean sheet. Luke Thomas (off for Lewis Gordon 79') - 8 Ran the show for the Gas in the first half with some brilliant defensive moments despite playing back in an advanced role. Always looked a threat when going forward too, such an important player in this team. Chris Martin (off for John Marquis 94') - 7 Didn't have much of a sniff in terms of making it eight goals in six league games but his hold up and link up play was important to keep the Gas fluid. Always a physical presence up front too which helps and got his head to a couple of aerial deliveries to help the defensive effort. Substitutions:Lewis Gordon (on 79') - N /A Didn't have much to do but helped the cause as Bristol Rovers got a first clean sheet since Matt Taylor's arrival. Harry Vaughan (on 79') - N/A Didn't have much of an opportunity to get on the ball. Would have hoped to get a sight of a counter-attack but Rovers had to remain disciplined to see the game out. Elkan Baggott (on 92') - N/A Saw the ball go out for a goal kick which was crucial in his brief spell. John Marquis (on 94') - N/A Came on too late to make a major difference.

Matt Taylor on victory today "I’ve just watched the goal back. Actually at the time I didn’t realise their defender got, not in a scuffle with the referee but the referee blocked his path a little bit but I don’t think he’s getting there. He put in a shift and a strike of severe quality and that’s been enough to win us the game. "I really liked us first half. We had a few more chances. Bar Chrissy’ chance in the second half we had to weather a little bit of a storm. Jed’s played his part in that. As much as I’m pleased with the three points, and I am, and back-to-back wins, that’s the first clean sheet since I’ve been here and I’ve been asking, begging, driving for that because I know how important they are because we will generally create chances."
'As good as I've seen us for a long time' - Matt Taylor "It was an honest performance from start to finish but quality in defensive attributes. Not many times have I been able to select George Friend and James Wilson two games on the bounce so personnel makes a difference and Trsitan probably looks more comfortable with his legs in the middle. Collectively, the work that Chrissy did top to bottom, the midfield shifts, I want us to have more in our legs as a game progresses to lend and take the pressure off us with the ball. We didn’t do that well enough in the second half but first half was as good as I’ve seen us for a long time."
Matt Taylor on Brandon Aguilera's debut "He’s probably playing one deeper than he wants to play if that makes sense? We just wanted him to play his first game with the game in front of him. The goal looked like that. A moment where he could get his first experience of lower league English football and League One football being over your shoulders and back and forth. Sometimes that’s a horrible place to be in midfield so I just wanted him to have the picture in front of him. In terms of his actual tidying up of the game, he showed real quality in amongst bodies. "He’s got to learn when to do it and not to do it but that will come. I don’t want him to overthink his game and I can’t wait for bodies to come back and maybe we can see him in a slightly higher profile."

First away league win since 11 Nov at Carlisle United 1 0 when we last kept a clean sheet which is 12 games since we managed that feat. The firstpart is incorrect. We won 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers on December 16th.

Can they play this fixture on the famous Exmouth beach? For tis where we metaphorically are. Well maybe not, as it holds fab memories of me snogging LR but that's a different story. Either way, win lose or draw, does it really matter? I still care for the travelling faithful but today and yonder I would love to see Greenslade feature as well as the gulp digestion of Jed Ward et al at some point. Today we see the regurgitation of one of our closest fixtures, barely rivalry, that I hope they stay up but have no feelings for one way or another... If they aren't up together in defence, CM will terrorise them: he's experienced, a unit and hungry for more. Can he hit 20? I say, yes!: Grecian non Greeks 1 CM hat trick.............3 It's coming, ladies and gentlemen and inbetweeners, enjoy your game your way and always as usual, UptheGas! Attachments:

Just got back... From Ifollow.
Wow we break our Devon hoodoo! In dogmatic, last gasp defending and stubbornness in performance.
I thought we played well.
I quite liked our starting line up, balance and players playing in their natural positions.
After starting by surrendering possession early doors, we settled (I don't know why?) and played some easy on the eye football and exhibited a smooth rhythm for the majority of first half.
The second half was more Exeter, credit on them (see what I done there!?) but I still think we helped them by defending too deep and retracting.... which leads us on to the last form of defence - Ward, again looking more than competent, made some fantastic saves (even giving the fist pump yay to see his heart is in it as much as anything else) and penalty box presence. Another excellent performance to suggest it wasn't beginners luck. Has the jersey for foreseeable for me....he looks like an imposing keeper we've been pleading for for years that isn't going to treat his jersey with nonchalance like Belly, but rather with respect.
I liked how Hunt managed to get himself into a couple of goalscoring positions.
I liked the running and time CM gave to the team.
I liked Crama being more masterful in his role.
I liked the covering Friend offered the mid and defence.
I liked Vale's confident passing and crossing.
I liked Conteh winning ball passing to player, he just never gives away possession.
But in particular, Aguero scoring a scorcher on debut, was my m o m..... oozed class, brilliant control on ball which appeared to give him more time and looked absolute quality. Settled in straight away, looks a real coup and exciting proposition....plus, must be up there somewhere with quickest time scoring on debut?
In conclusion..... A great result and first time on long long while we keep a clean sheet, and see out a game from an early winning position. Well done MT for exacting revenge for a few weeks ago where we just weren't good enough and propelling us into the top 10. Nice one.

Isn’t it brilliant to see us grow our own instead of someone else’s player?
Not been totally sold on Cox either. Not to say he is a bad keeper - he isn’t - and light years better than Balcombe, but on current form Ward is looking at least his equal. He is going to make the odd mistake because of his age, and it is important we stick by him at those times rather than get on his back.
Something else that seems to have gone unnoticed - Antony Evans has now clocked up 100 appearances in the quarters. First club he has settled at and suggests he enjoys it here. Hope there are several hundred more to come. A player with a bit of magic in his boots that can win games on his own

Another factor to consider, wrt Ward, is the reaction of supporters if Cox is chosen for any reason. I sincerely hope Gasheads avoid calling Ward's name or, even worse, giving Cox a hard time. Unfortunately, I fear it is likely to happen.
