Back in the day, we used the names of teams like Barnsley as a derogatory term to describe other teams as in, "Are you Barnsley in disguise?"Barnsley then went on to show what success can look like and even had a spell in the Premiership while we've taken what joy we can from juggling seasons in Div2 (now the Championship), L1, L2 and the National League (ouch it still hurts saying that). In recent times, it feels like we're the team others use as a disparaging comparison. Despite all that, the onfield improvements since the arrival of MT from Barnsley's Yorkshire rivals Rotherham are encouraging... to the point I'm beginning to believe we can compete with the top 10 in this league. In Luke Thomas, we have the returning player and he's bound to score against us syndrome, on our side. Despite my opinions in the Provoking Rival Supporters Thread, I'll take great delight in him cupping his ear to the Tykes supporters as he hits his hat trick goal into the back of the net. I think a win may be a step too far so if LT is to get his hat trick then it has to be 3-3. UTG

Lot of admiration for Barnsley. Proper community club with decent facilities and friendly fans (in my experience). Have held their own reasonably well against their more illustrious neighbours.
Would be happy with a point up there and we are capable of taking all 3 if everyone shows up

It would remind me of the opening home game of the 69-70 season when Robin Stubbs made his home debut and scored a goal to put us 3-2 up before they equalised. All the goals in the first half iirc. Happy days. UTG!

Wow, Robin Stubbs, wasn’t he hooked up with Anthea Redfearn for a while ? Good striker for the Rovers back then.

Wow, Robin Stubbs, wasn’t he hooked up with Anthea Redfearn for a while ? Good striker for the Rovers back then. Stubbs was formerly married to Anthea Redfern, who went on to marry Bruce Forsyth and assist him on the BBC game-show The Generation Game. In January 2020 Torquay United announced that the board of directors had appointed Stubbs as an Honorary Life President of the club. Robin is now 82, played for Birmingham City, Torquay United and BRFC, He played in 392 career games and scored 170 goals... His record at BRFC was played 93 games, scoring 32 goals from 1969-1972.

Bristol Rovers team news as key man expected to miss Barnsley while returnee is in contention..By Daniel Hargraves.
The latest injury news ahead of Bristol Rovers' trip to Barnsley on Saturday afternoon
i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9028731.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_JS320977386.jpg Grant Ward is expected to miss Bristol Rovers' trip to Barnsley this weekendBristol Rovers first-team coach Kevin Bond has revealed that he expects Grant Ward to be out injured for "weeks, not days" after being forced off early in the second half of last weekend's 1-1 draw at Norwich City in the FA Cup. Ward scored an excellent equaliser for the Gas five minutes after Ashley Barnes had handed the Canaries the lead against the run of play and has been one of Matt Taylor's star players since the 41-year-old came into the job last month. However, the 29-year-old is expected to miss this Saturday's trip to Barnsley and could well miss Wednesday's replay against Norwich at the Mem and next weekend's home game against Blackpool at least. Bond was filling in for Taylor with pre-match press duties as the Gas manager's wife is due to give birth to their second child. Whether the Rovers boss will be able to be in the dugout at Oakwell is currently unclear but, when asked about Ward's fitness, the coach revealed: "I fear that it's going to be, and I don't know I'm just guessing here, weeks not days and he will be sorely missed because he gives us something that we haven't got in terms of his energy levels in the middle of the park and he's done very well. He scored a terrific goal on Saturday I thought. So we'll miss him." Elsewhere on the injury front, Jack Hunt seems to be closing in on a return from a groin problem while Lewis Gordon is unlikely to be risked on Saturday but his involvement back in the side also seems imminent. The former was withdrawn in last month's FA Cup win at Crewe Alexandra due to injury and was able to get himself back fit for an appearance from the bench on Boxing Day against Portsmouth but the issue has flared up again, keeping the right-back out since. As for the latter, Gordon started Taylor's first game in charge in the EFL Trophy defeat at Crawley Town but was forced off at half-time and hasn't made a squad since. On injuries, Bond added: "Jack Hunt trained with us today and at the start of the week he did a small session and joined in with part of it. I may be right in thinking that today was his first day back with the team and completed all of the training. If he's not there already, this would be a decision that the manager would need to make in consultation with the physios and Hunty himself in terms of how he's feeling, how ready he is, given that he's had a few weeks off. He, as far as I can see, is there or there abouts. i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/article7010022.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/1_JMP_Hartlepool_United_v_Bristol_Rovers_RS_210JPG.jpgBristol Rovers coach Kevin Bond"He had a little bit longer out, Lewis. He's had a few weeks out now so we would need to tread more carefully with him in terms of trying to give him some minutes somewhere. But before that I would imagine he would need to have a period of time of completing a full day's training and another full day training and another so we'll have to bring him back gently. We'd sooner leave it for one game rather than bring him back too early and then we miss him for the next six so we need it to be right." The Rovers coach also revealed that James Connolly has trained throughout the week after returning from his loan at Morecambe with a slight calf strain. The defender was cup-tied for the trip to Norwich City anyway so was ineligible but should be involved in some capacity on Saturday having not made an appearance for the Gas since August's 2-0 League Cup defeat at Ipswich Town. James Wilson's long-term injury has left Rovers short at centre-back but the trio of Josh Grant, Connor Taylor and Tristan Crama did well at Norwich in his absence so Matt Taylor will have a decision to make as to whether or not he throws Connolly straight into the starting line up, particularly knowing that he won't be able to play on Wednesday night in the replay. The 22-year-old's departure for League Two Morecambe did come as a bit of a surprise at the time after the defender had started the Pirates' opening game of the season away at Portsmouth. Bond too admitted he was surprised to see Connolly depart, a player he worked with in his previous spell at the club during the League Two promotion season and early months of last term. i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9031086.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_JS319727351-1.jpgLuke Thomas of Bristol Rovers wins a challenge against Bolton Wanderers"He's trained and he trained today for the whole of the session so I see no reason why not if the manager sees fit," the Gas coach exclaimed. "It's good to have him back, obviously a boy I know well. "I've got to say, I was slightly surprised when I saw him [go out on loan]. I wasn't here at the time but knowing what he's capable of and I actually went to the Portsmouth game first game of the season and I thought he played well in a team that really tried to play out from the back. It was evident that that's what they had been trying hard on and I thought he was key to that. Certainly from a personal level I'm glad to have him back." Elsewhere on the injury front, it seems as though Jordan Rossiter is no closer getting back into first-team plans which is of particular frustration given how light Rovers now find themselves in midfielder. The 26-year-old hasn't played for the Gas since December 2022 after picking up a serious knee injury that has continued to bring up setbacks which the midfielder still doesn't seem close to overcoming. Whether we'll see him pull on the blue-and-white quarters again is a conversation for another day but a relevant conversation given that his contract expires in the summer and there are still no indications that he's anywhere close. On Rossiter, Bond stated: "I feel very sorry for Jordy. He's been beset with setbacks and a better professional you will ever struggle to meet. He rocks up here in the mornings with a smile on his face. A brilliant guy and a brilliant professional but that's not anything anywhere near imminent in terms of him being able to pull on a shirt for us and help us in the immediate future."

I usually take in the Northern trips. I was hoping to see how we cope with the departures and injuries. Hope it is a good game for the travelling fans!
