Only ever saw the vast terrace of the Muller Road End full to the imaginary rafters when the Gunners shot us down in the FA Cup. You could count the fag ends littering the steps on a Saturday afternoon From mid 70’s. The only teams other than Gunners that spring to mind as having a good go at filling the Muller Road end were Soton & Sunderland that I can recall. Stoke league cup, city a couple of times,Forest in their promotion season....Wolves in the league....Totts had a few so did Ipswich in that cup game...Chelsea. Someone told me that the Muller rd end capacity was 12,000,does anyone know ?

I watched from the Tote and don’t remember the specifics except one of great Eastville nights in the 60s and 70s. And of course how Stoke beat us soundly. ☹️ UTG!

Yes it was overcrowded that night, made me wonder what the record crowd must have been like, all the north side must have been standing then I suppose. I was at AG for the night game in 75,absolutely rammed but the crowd wasnt even 30,000...how they got 39,000 in there against Forest and Liverpool a couple of seasons later is a mystery to me. As you say great Eastville nights, good crowds in the league cup games, blokes who played football on saturdays could come to the matches, those that started watching Rovers later wont have experienced atmospheres like that, for those that did modern match 'atmosphere' seems either flat or non existent.

I will never forget that game as all of the family went accept for me and mum but my father and brothers told me there were fans on the pitch. I was absolutely gutted but they made the right decision. We will not see that kind of crowd again.

It’s all a little bit embarrassing and tinpot naming a temporary stand after a true club great, new 21st century stadia yes, temporary stand not for me. ‘Can we get anything over the line’ stand is my choice

Anyway, i surely do not think the south stand would befit our only England cap and most prolific goal scorer. Let’s see what happens before looking to name anything. It’s very premature to be doing so, as I see it anyway

Is this the game being quoted - Bristol Rovers 2 Stoke City 4 - League Cup Q/F - 23rd November 1971 - Stoke went on to win the League Cup that year...

It is. I don’t remember exactly the scoring sequence but written down it looks a lot closer than it really was. Probably the best Stoke City team ever and as well as winning the League Cup they also got to the FA Cup semi final I think, when doing that meant something. UTG!

Probably the best Stoke City team ever and as well as winning the League Cup they also got to the FA Cup semi final I think, when doing that meant something. UTG! That 1971-72 season Stoke finished 17th in the 1st division, Won the league cup v Chelsea 2-1, reached the S/F of the FA Cup losing to Arsenal after a replay... They also lost on penalties the 3rd place match v Birmingham of a 5 year experiment between the two losing FA Cup semi-finalists... They reached the Q/F of the Texaco cup losing to eventual winners Derby County and did not make it out of the group stages of the 1972 Anglo-Italian Cup. That season Jackie Marsh played 69 games, Alan Bloor 63, John Ritchie 60, Jimmy Greenhoff 59, Gordon Banks 59 and 3 others played more than 50 games too.
