I bought a picture from the League Review (74/75 season I think) of Eastville from the open end,its also got a small picture of Colin Dobson added to the main picture. I tried to put the picture on here but I cant,I am guessing that the photo was taken in 72 or 73 as rose beds were still in front of the Tote end and work is taking place to clear the gas works site.
The view from the open end was better than from the Tote end imo as the terracing was higher,by that time segregation was in place and as I was a teenager the open end was best avoided for some matches.
The BRI chimney is visible in the background I dont know when that was built, you can also see the flats at Kingsdown and Royal Fort, the picture brought back a lot of memories. You can also see the potential of the stadium, with the massive car parks, easy motorway access and a train station near by plus many bus routes it really should have been bought and developed as a multi sports venue.

If you could put Eastville Stadium circa 1980 back where it was would you go back like a shot ?

If you want a good wallow in Eastville nostalgia, take a look at Alan Marshall's Flickr pages: www.flickr.com/photos/alan_spain/As an example, this photo shows the 13 Arches End from a local derby in the 1930s

The stand that burnt would I assume fail safety standards.Crowds 'miles' from the field of play. In the scenario 'we owned' it and could build a new Eastville Stadium, then yes.Probably.

[rbr] I remember the ball going into the rose beds late doors in a match where we wanted to press The ballboys were struggling with the hurty thorns, so Dick Sheppard waded straight through in his shorts, and picked up the ball to huge applause Them were the days

It's great to reminisce sometimes, to those times when everything was right, your fav pub, work or footie ground, might not be the best but it was our (fans) ground.

Also where it all went wrong, selling the ground to lease it back and owners who let it go to ruin. Sure, we have had our moments away from there but it really did feel like home. A good test to see of a girlfriend was a keeper too, if she could handle a match then i would stay a while

It was a hovel at the end, all the same. Very true. That last season it made the Mem look like the Emirates stadium in comparison. 4,000 average crowds (or below), an open end and open side, 500 tops in the Tote at the end, and a pitch you could grow cabbages on. For all the nostalgia, it was desperate stuff at the end.

It sure was, I remember one evening game towards the end of our tenure there that the one and only Lester Shapter was refereeing and he asked the bench if the club could turn on the floodlights ! Sadly they were on at full power already with the obligatory five candles lit per pylon !

I remember going on a stadium tour and being told that 82's pylons were about 4 feet higher than ours, which was a great disappointment we also saw the cabinet trophy, which had the Watney Cup, promotion thing, and Gloucestershire Senior Cup in it. I thought life was always going to be like that...

Indeed, I lived in the second terraced house on Napier Road (Muller Road end) directly behind what used to be the South Stand from 1981 to 1984, had a clear view of all games from the Bedroom window, I hardly ever saw groundsmen tending the pitch and it was a proverbial junk yard around the perimeter of the stadium, it was a very sorry sight, the end terrace was also owned by the Stadium Co and was left to decay.

I wonder if they had the deal with Tesco lined up and needed to progress things to the next phase?
