I ran the line in the Liverpool v Arsenal title decider in '89 when Michael Thomas scored in the last minute.Arsenal needed to win by two clear goals and with a minute to go were only one nil up.However it was their first goal that was contentious.Alan Smith glanced in a header from an indirect free kick.Ronnie Whelan told me ,'I say Lino old chap, that ball went straight in without touching anyone so as it was in-direct I think you should jolly well dis allow it'. What he actually said was ....~********. Ref David Hutchison came to ask me what I thought. He had given it in -direct for dangerous play I think it was but seemed unsure if Alan Smith had made contact.Hand cleary extended fully vertically to indicate it was in -direct. No VAR or mikes then but it was the correct decision. Can't comment on anything these days as a toe nail can be deemed off-side. Got slated by the assessor for allowing the subs to warm up behind me which he said' Could have been distracting'.He added ,'Did you not consider finding somewhere more convenient?' As it was my final season ,I replied,'What like Goodison Park'. NB.The Ernie Hunt free kick was outlawed for two reasons.a.It was played by two feet and b. hadn't travelled it's own circumference before being touched by a second player.
