19’ to 27’. Lost possession on receipt of a hospital pass from Ollie Norburn. The officials were starting to lose the plot, but even referee Scott Duncan could not miss the shirt-pull on O’Toole. John-Joe passed the free-kick short to Tom Parkes, whose long deep cross was collected (unchallenged) by Mansfield goalkeeper Marriott. Lowlight: Tom Lockyer went out to the left-back position to confront the Mansfield striker Andrew, Lee Brown having already struggled with the injury that caused him to be replaced, but could not prevent the dipping cross to the edge of the six-yard area. Stevenson managed to get ahead of John-Joe O’Toole and in front of Steve Mildenhall to head firmly into goal. In an early response, John-Joe chased a long ball out to the right wing, but to no avail. Pat Keary replaced Lee Brown.
28’ to 36’. Closed down two Mansfield attacks, but let Dempster get away at a corner. The Mansfield centre half moved from the back post to the penalty spot, before heading wide from six yards out. John-Joe won a tackle and made two progressive passes to win Rovers a corner, for which he positioned himself at the near post, but the resultant flurry ended without advantage. This segment concluded with a third successful pass, an intercepted pass, a header and one loss of possession. Highlight: David Clarkson shot from 18 yards, which the keeper held. 37’ to Half-Time. Closed in on an opponent, slipped, but still won the tackle! Pushed up to the six yard box, in the hope of receiving a long throw. After the otherwise impressive Keary was outpaced and unable to prevent a cross, John-Joe was back on the goal line to support Steve Mildenhall, who took the ball cleanly. Won a tackle, but then conceded a dubious free kick. It went wide. John-Joe took responsibility for challenging the referee after he had overlooked yet another foul. He got on the end of a corner, but his glancing header was too fine. Other highlight: Brilliant inter-passing between Michael Smith and David Clarkson, into the Mansfield box, was eventually smothered by Marriott.

First Half. Rovers attacking the Quarry Lane stand, away from the visiting Rovers fans.
Kick Off to 9’. John-Joe completed five passes successfully. One went astray. One header. Twice slipped on the wet surface, but retained possession. Marked, as necessary, Mansfield’s Howell (13), Murtagh (8) and Stevenson (10). Twice stifled opposition moves. Other highlight: Ryan Brunt shot wide, from distance.
10’ to 18’. Two passes, both successful. Lost a heading duel, but won a tackle. Directly held up two Mansfield attacks and, marking Mansfield’s centre-half Dempster (4) at a corner, was not averse to some Greco-Roman wrestling. Mis-hit an overhead clearance, but Ollie Clarke tidied up. Other highlights: David Clarkson: one shot wide, one back-heel cleared by a defender.

Mansfield Town 1 Bristol Rovers 1 (12th October 2013)
Focus on John-Joe O’Toole
At a dark, drizzly Field Mill, Rovers gained a point. Santos (whose equaliser for Rovers in the 82nd minute was heavily deflected by Murtagh), Clarke and Keary replaced colleagues absent through injury or national service. Despite – or maybe because of - these changes, Rovers conjured an inter-passing game that deserved greater reward.
In League Two, central midfielders have a hard time; they’re often either by-passed or rapidly pressed, and don’t often take the spotlight that strikers or wingers attract.
In the following ten segments, each of nine minutes, you can see the raw facts of John-Joe O’Toole’s contribution to the game at Mansfield.
My conclusion is that his game could be characterised as “box-to-box” (have you ever noticed how he’s often “in-shot” both when we score and when we concede?) and he was a captain without armband. He didn’t often give the ball away. His high percentage of successfully completed passes included a lot of safe ones, but a minority were “progressive”. In my opinion, that’s the right way to do it. His marking, when defending set-pieces, could have been better, but he got through a huge amount of work.

BBC's stats need to be treated with caution.
On Breakfast TV, they've just announced that Kidderminster Harriers have the most expensive pie.
That might be true, but Kiddy's catering is famous for high-quality cottage pie - not the cardboard and paste you get at other grounds.
For Rovers, there's also a note in the survey that the club "also offers early-bird prices on season tickets and match day prices". Surely that should be factored into the survey?

Hooligans! I watched it from the Muller Road end. There weren't many away fans that day.

... I've often mused on which international sides Rovers could beat ... I vaguely remember Rovers playing and beating Zambia at Eastville in about 1977. Edit: A moment's googling shows that it was on 24th October 1978, and Rovers won 4:1. Link to front cover of programme for Rovers v Zambia

I have to say... Bashley were by far the worst team I have ever seen. First half they hardly got out of their penalty area, let alone half! They parked the bus and Yate had difficulty breaking them down. Shooting occasionally would have helped. I thought Yate were neat and played it on the floor. But the opposition put absolutely no pressure on them. It was too one-sided to be truly entertaining. But I'd go again. So a big thanks to Yate Town FC and their hospitality. Rovers should do more to link with these clubs lower down the pyramid. Tyrone Mings was a big one that got away... And the score was? 2:0. Report in Dursley Gazette

Not the best draw at first sight, but you don't progress far in any cup without meeting some kind of decent opponent. Southend are currently in 11th place in League 1, with 15 points from 11 games. At home, in the League, they've won two (Peterborough and S'thorpe) but lost three (Walsall, Swindon and Shrews). Their highest home crowd this season was the 6,149 in the first game in League 1 after promotion. They've done well away from home, winning at Millwall and Crewe, drawing at Fleetwood, Donny and Coventry, but losing at Burton In the JPT, they reached Round 3 (the Area Quarter Finals) by beating Crawley (away) by three goals without reply. And if you're weary of the UWE saga, Southend are girding their loins for their own quest for a new stadium. Link to Southend Stadium Consultation

There were 5 changes, but the 5 coming in were all on the bench in Wycombe's 2:3 home defeat against Northampton on Saturday. And the three subs that came on for Wycombe tonight were all in the starting line-up in the Northampton match.

I would like Yeovil at home in the QF Is it regionalised to South-west, or just south? Could be Gillingham away... Edit: Just checked. According to the competition rules, after the second round, "the sections are now merged leaving just a Northern and Southern section". Link to JPT Competition Rules

3243....... not too bad really That's what I was thinking. Then I saw Plymouth had 9,441, admittedly for their derby against Exeter.

How rare is it for Rovers to win 3:0 away from home? It was only the sixth such scoreline in fifteen years. With Morecambe on the horizon, I hesitate to write this; but on every one of those previous five occasions, Rovers followed up with another win! Rovers won the next match after a 3:0 win away from home. That's now happened on each of the last SIX 3:0 away wins! Remarkable!!

According to the Johnstone's Paint "Match Centre": Assist on the [Taylor] goal came from Chris Lines. Assist [on the Easter goal] by Cristian Montano.

Mansell has a "tight thigh" and missed training yesterday, according to Darrell Clarke on Radio Bristol. So he's rested. Likewise, James Clarke was "showing signs of tiredness at Morecambe" so sits this one out.

It's Macca, as you suspected, not Lockyer.

Seems like a very positive development. From the OS: Backroom Restructuring"Manager Darrell Clarke has restructured his backroom staff and handed Steve Yates a new role as Coach and Recruitment Consultant while appointing former Rovers youth team player Marco Carota as his new kit manager".
