I think that buying 'veteran' players is a gamble some come off others dont usually because of fitness problems. Some strikers can carry on scoring wherever they play and until a ripe old age,Bobby Gould did OK for the Rovers,Mick Channon,Bob Lee and Chic Bates amongst others didnt...lets hope that BP stays fit because he is a good finisher with a decent goal scoring record. You must be as old as me. Although Bob Lee and Chick Bates didnt really do that well for us did they?

Welcome to the gas Brett. I saw him sign up to AFCB on the pitch as a 16 year old a long time ago. I must have seen nearly all of his goals at Dean Court and the occasional travel so I’m pleased to see him sign. He’s never been quick so speed was never one of his strongest so won’t matter that he’s losing it, after all he runs a bit like a chicken. But the guy comes alive in the box, so get the ball in the box and he will score a few. He is a very frustrating player, he will look not involved, he will have a moan and fans will start to get on his back and then he’ll get a chance and put it away. At the Mem he did nothing then the ball came into the box, defender missed it and there was Pitman to put it away, typical. I listened to my friend next to me moan and complain about him for about 10 years and then he went and scored goals to get AFCB into the PL. And every now and again he’ll get the ball outside the box and score an amazing goal. Not sure he’s done too many of those in the last year or so but I’m pleased to see him here. UTG!

The own goal on frozen pitch against Carlisle, the Saturday before Christmas, in 1980-81 relegation season was like a dagger to my heart. It sapped my morale and eroded any Christmas spirit. Bob Lee and Bah Humbug are synonymous in my vocabulary.

Brett can hit direct free kicks from 20 to 25 yards or so.
Good penalty taker too.

191 goals in 593 games, couple of milestones coming up A seasoned good old journey-man type of player, should score 15-20 goals for us with some decent service, needs a Cureton type of player to knock balls down to. Reminds me of a certain Andy Rammell who was 36 when we signed him, he scored 6 goals in 14, i remember the Oxford away game volley like it was yesterday.

He's more Cureton than Rammell in my opinion. I'd have been quite impressed with this signing a couple of years ago, let's hope he's still wants it.

I cant remember how old Gary Emmanuel was when he arrived but he was disappointing too and my mate told me that 'Miah Dennehy is brilliant' hmmm. Could probably have a thread of players who didnt live up to our expectations just in the 70s and 80s but it would be too depressing.

Philip Desmond "Chic" Bates = 26 (+3) appearances / 4 goals.
Can't be many players that made so few appearances as Chic, and are still so well remembered.
Maybe assisted by the name?

Don't forget the brilliant Bob Newton who gave hope to all overweight middle aged men of a career in proffesionual football.

Yeah, Payne might well be, but for all the wrong reasons.
40 years on and most of us on the forum either won't be around, or won't remember much at all, let alone the football! :-D
