As a Liverpool fan, it was a real golden period for me during the durge of United titles when he won those trophies, when we beat them in the 2003 League Cup Final and I felt he was only a couple of signings away from winning the Prem. That FA Cup final win v Arsenal. The 5-4 v Alaves. Signing Gary Mac. The penalties win v Brum, beating Man U away 3 times.
If anything, it was his health that cost us then. He didn't come back the same man, even though Thommo did a bloody good job of finishing 2nd in 2002 in his absence.
I disagreed with selling Fowler, but apart from that he was excellent for Liverpool. Just fell short by signing one too many Senegalese. Shame Mane was only about 8..
The tributes today from Murphy and Carra, etc are well deserved.
Thanks for that lovely golden period where we forgot about how good Man U were for a couple of years. Cheers GH.

Gerard Houllier's stats on his own as Liverpool manager 16th July 1998 - 24th May 2004 = Pld 307, W 160, D 73, L 74 = 52.12 Win Ratio + 6 Honours.
