The Rovers history group are really pleased to have established this as the clubs inaugural team. They adopted the black shirts from the rugby club which used the sports ground and were formed by some school teachers who met at the Collins restaurant on Stapleton Road in Eastville and decided to form an association football club to allow local men to participate in sport. Get Keith to give it a mention on tomorrow's commentary Mike

The photo is on BBC Bristol Sport Twitter. So someone could put it on ere. Hmm. Kim Stuckey! Are you watching?🙂 Vindication! I see a pair of hooped socks! A round neck on shirt but no laces (on shirt collar). Dandy PT II might have his eye on one of the hats! They probably had to tie all the laces together to make a crossbar No crossbar with tapes until at least another ten years later....lots of disputes about was it goal or not ….bless VAR

Great find Mike.
When did the Black Arabs 1883 based at Wootton-under-Edge become Eastville Rovers and move to playing in Bristol? I suppose our roots confirms our North of the River credentials.
Is there any history of the club ever playing Staple Hill, who played Manchester United in FA Cup in 1907?

Just read the wikipedia page on history and read about this era.
Purdown Poachers indeed.
Staple Hill and Eastville Rovers were in a play-off in 1895-6 Western League for second place.Finished 2-2 and they were declared joint runners'up.

Has it ever been confirmed, Harry?

Could I posit a theory that may be of interest to Rovers history buffs - people have always talked about the North-South thing but in reality wouldn't it be more accurate to say that historically we are primarily East Bristol's football team? This has always seemed fairly obvious to me if you consider where were historically based, where our 'heartland' (to the extent that we have one) is ultimately based but you never hear people say this. Is there a case for saying that in Bristol sporting lore South = City, East = Rovers, North = Rugby?
I know that's absurdly simplistic but so is the North-South thing.

Just to keep things fair, perhaps the BBC should also post a picture of the $h1t from 1982.

Later switched to Durdham Downs an amateur set up of course. Yes Staple Hill were regular opponents of course as were Warmley and St George. David Woods the City historian has just finished a massive research project on the early days of Bristol football. He is selling copies will find out details. It is a remarkable 40 year effort.

The historical kits website has this exact kit depicted, but the text below does not cite any source for the design. They read only that we had 'a kit of buff and green', which I believe we should have always, in quarters, as our third kit (always black quarters for our second).

If a news 'buff' said it that's good enough for me. Not sure I'd want us to wear toned down Newton Heath shirts permanently though.

Where can I get one? I'll pay good money. Best regards, supporter of Bristol Rovers FC, formed in 1883. Historic, proud, and never knocked a creditor. Current address: Moral high ground, Epping, Essex.

My Dad supported them, but liked and watched Rovers as well, as people used to in the 50s & 60s. I ended up with a few City programmes but only kept that one as it makes me laugh! Got it here if you want any pics to annoy people! IPG PS Peterborough goalie was David Seamen.
