I can only imagine we must've been decidedly better than average 30 years ago then

Maintain that this season and we'll finish in about 10th or 11th place. Not bad.

We were also the last Club to have only ever played in tiers 2 and 3. This was prior to our relegation to tier 4 in 2000-2001. We have never troubled the top flight. We are average, totally average, we are Rovers, from Horfield.

Blimey I didn’t need that to tell me are dead average. I’ve been saying the same for years. But seriously that’s not a bad stat to own and despite all the moans, the last 6 years have been ok. It was most of this century between 2000 and 2014 (save the league 1 years 07-11) that were so poor. I have to say when we celebrated the opening of this century back in Dec 1999 I never thought the next 20 years would be so full of lows and highs. Such is the life of a Gashead! UTG!

We are average, totally average, we are Rovers, from Horfield. The truth is we have been remarkably consistent in our mediocrity down the years. In theory it should be quite difficult to spend long periods morooned in the middle of the 3rd tier because it's not like anyone is aiming for that and it doesn't normally take that much to jump to challengers or plunge to relegation. Yet we have managed to spend long periods of our existance doing exactly that. We thoroughly deserve that moniker - we've worked bloody hard to be that mediocre.
In reality I'd make the case that, given the size of the City, I'd argue that we are the single most underachieving club in football league history and the 'averageness' hides chronic underperformance. Even when we were 'good' we weren't really that good compared with the 'good' other clubs have had at some point.
