Bristol Rovers and their EFL rivals have been invited to apply to host a pilot event this weekend with 1,000 supporters in attendance.
BBC Sport reports clubs were contacted by league bosses on Tuesday morning to ask if they were interested in staging a trial event at their league games on Saturday.
Rovers host Ipswich Town at the Mem this weekend, and the club has confirmed it has been contacted by the EFL and is receiving advice from the league before tonight’s deadline for applications.
The EFL's head of policy John Nagle, in a letter obtained by the BBC, told member clubs: "We cannot guarantee at this stage that all clubs that would like to stage a pilot will be given permission to do so, as only a limited number will be approved.

I fear this will be problematic as I'm estimating that we have around 1,500 suitable candidates

Bristol Rovers have decided against applying to host a pilot event this weekend for 1,000 supporters, Bristol Live understands.
BBC Sport reports clubs were contacted by league bosses on Tuesday morning to ask if they were interested in staging a trial event at their league games on Saturday.
Rovers host Ipswich Town at the Mem this weekend, but a decision has been made internally that the timeframe [sic] given by the EFL isn't long enough to get organised in terms of meeting Covid-19 regulations.
Edit: There was no guarantee that if a club applies they will be selected.

So the "time frame" isn't long enough. What would be long enough? Any possibility our next home game might be within that time frame?

So the "time frame" isn't long enough. What would be long enough? Any possibility our next home game might be within that time frame? I'm a bit ambivalent about this. At the start of the return to school movement we had heads wringing their hands and basically phased by it all, whereas Denmark had sorted it for some time and people seemed to forget children of essential workers had been in school for months - learn from them. Somebody said it was confusing and more clarification was needed and this has been taken up by many as a result of any government action. Could the BRFC staff/hierarchy be indolent or not able to not work it through? I don't know, I do not deny it would be difficult, but possibly because there was no guarantee that the club would be selected by the EFL for the small group allowed there was less enthusiasm. There is also the danger that the event could cause a future break out of the disease, who would want to be responsible for that? Whatever, the game would have to be safe to me and this would/should override my desire to get back to the Mem. Bloogas is right the club should start planning now for the Northampton game on the 3 Oct and not wait 'til later.

I think it could realistically take a few weeks to properly plan for the safe return of supporters to the Mem. This includes:
1. Calculating a safe limit. This would involve deciding where people can sit / stand. 2. Deciding on routes through the stadium. The three entrances are wide enough for a two-way system. Or you could designate entrances as one-way. 3. Marking out safe routes and queuing lines. 4. Taping closed unsuitable seats. 5. Marking out designated standing areas.
If we have a date for return (say 3rd October) then I would expect this work to be happening now.
4 days is not realistic for a safe implementation of this process.
A Covid-safe environment could definitely be implemented in the stands and terraces at the Mem (with the right numbers). It's the toilets that concern me. That would need proper thought and planning.

How do you mark out standing areas? Could be one person on own or a family of 2 or more.
Or do you make everyone space out?

According to Bristol Live: It has been confirmed that two matches in the Championship, four in League One and three in League Two will take part in the pilot programme with games at Norwich, Middlesbrough, Charlton, Blackpool, Shrewsbury, Hull, Forest Green, Carlisle and Morecambe.

I respectfully take issue with the planning taking several weeks. I would think a planning team with switched on people (including a fan or two) should take less than 2 weeks. The Academy side can be used in a testing rehearsal. But yes, richmace is right in saying that 3-4 days is not long enough and downright irresponsible of the Government and/or EFL.

How do you mark out standing areas? Could be one person on own or a family of 2 or more. Or do you make everyone space out? I think that is the difficult bit.
You could easily identify single seats, and remove surrounding seats permanently from use. This is easy. How you cope with bubbles (family groups for example) AND then distance these bubbles from individuals becomes difficult. You almost need to leave it down to people to maintain distancing, which relies on people applying common sense. This will not end well.
The same applies for terracing.
How do you enforce the distancing in the same way you can in an office / shop?
Mask wearing will be compulsory.
Personally, when I attend the Mem next, if we are still under restrictions then I will simply move to an empty area. I would even give up my seat and find a quiet area of terracing if required.
