Cracking point that. Was the defence's fault we conceded 2 tonight, nothing Garner can do about defensive errors...

The good news for rovers bad news for Sunderland, First rule of sherpyvanwindscrenwiperpaintpot match night is that it’s meaningless in the bigger picture.

No win game for Garner.
Win and it's a pointless competition, but now he has yet another L against his name.

The new season optimism has dispelled and I now fear this may be yet another painful season.

Why were Kelly and Harries who made numerous mistakes throughout the game allowed to take penalties? Why did Mitchell Lawson, Daley both substitutes and fresh lefgs not take a penalty?

The shoot out is just for extra point, not win/loss. M for meaningless even if we won 8-1 today. it does at least show we have a lot of players on the books, but are they much of a muchness, or will a decent 11 emerge from them. wasn’t there a rule you can only make x changes from Saturday in this to avoid fine?

OK, but in that case it's going to have to be one D and a L, but no W, even against L2 opposition. If we want to take our pedantry to extremes, check the L2 table, Walsall are bottom!

First game I have watched this new season, was not impressed with our defending and the Shotstopper does appears to be a little flat footed at times. We do not look confident trying to play it out from the back, if we try that at Sunderland we won't get out the half!. Top marks to young Mehew who scored a very good goal and happy to see Ayunga get off the mark, he does look a tidy player. I would say that the ' Garner-ball Game Plan' is more than fragile, but the players are at least trying, for now.

8-1 Sunderland beat Villa U 21s new signing Danny Graham scored one two for Charlie Wyke. Just warmed up for Saturday! and possibly a similar result, assuming we get a lucky goal from somewhere. Gasheads - Fearing the worse since 1883.Obviously I hope we get something at Sunderland, but everything points to a loss. Sunderland to win are currently best odds (that I can find) 17-20. Those odds look 1. generous, and 2. will only shorten as we approach Saturday. (Bizarrely as I looked up a few odds... Sabadell are playing a friendly... with a 9am kick off. Strange times).

wasn’t there a rule you can only make x changes from Saturday in this to avoid fine? I wondered that, as soon as I saw the line-up to face Walsall, but then counted up the changes. (By changes, I think it means anyone chosen to play against Walsall who wasn't in the starting XI or used as a sub at Ipswich). So the changes were only: Kelly, Tutonda, Harries, Mehew and Walker. (Three of those were on the bench at Ipswich, in any case). Since we haven't played any League games this season, perhaps the changes rule didn't apply to this match, anyway. In an interview even before the Ipswich match, Ben Garner was dropping hints that he would be rotating the squad for the Walsall game. The performance against Ipswich was not to his liking, but I think he stuck to his plan, regardless. (Some might have thought that he should have played his strongest side against Walsall to speed the "gelling" process, but I think Garner stuck to his plan. There were signs that he used the Walsall game as something of a development experience: Kilgour captain - Baldwin in midfield). In that vein, I reckon he will change back to his "strongest" side to start up at Sunderland; I think only three of the team that started against Walsall will line up at the Stadium of Light. Jaakkola; Kilgour - Ehmer - Little; Leahy - Westbrooke - Grant - Hare; Mitchell-Lawson - Ayunga - Nicholson.

Are we entering a phase, Ben has his preferred 11 and formation, and most of us fans don’t agree with it? yet if we choose our 11 and formation from this squad, none of use would agree either? with hare/little. Leahy/Kelly it has to be 3 2wb, ? At this point I don’t like the 2 3 he is playing in front the 5, the three spread across the front, I’d prefer 3 4 (wb) 1 2. A blend of 2 up front working together, pulling defenders off one another, maybe back to goal holder to hold it while we re group with presser beside him and an advanced midfielder filling the hole behind. cant though, because we’ve got too many wingers to work with. could be the squads fundamentally flawed if best 11 is wingers AND wing backs.

I know us fans are impatient but I’d have thought there had been time to target a striker, as a replacement for the lairy one. Given the Bennie boy must be feeling some pressure, I’m hoping we get one and soon. I can only go on comments made by others who watched, fully. I managed one half, I’d have thought this would be a priority. It’s very surreal not going to games as it is but I don’t think any other rovers manager would be getting the comments he is. I think a crowd would add to his woes

Did I miss the post match interview after the Walsall game? Just wrap a load of excuses around the words 'me' and 'I' and you'll have one of Garner's interviews.
