Having finally sorted out the 2019-2020 season... what will 2020-2021 look like? I don't think League 1 & 2 is financially viable with football Behind Closed Doors (BCD). If Clubs couldn't complete the 19-20 season BCD, how can they be expected to start BCD? The revenue streams for iFollow just won't stack up. Does (say) 5000 people paying (say £10) come anywhere near BRFC being able to pay it's bills? Unlikely IMHO. But perhaps that is better than nothing though. The alternative would be to wait til crowds can attend again - Jan 2021? Prompts the question of how many Clubs will be able to survive that long. Whether it's 6 or 9 months without revenue and bills to pay. Doesn't look good. Ironically I feel more optimistic now about BRFC than I have done in years. Wael is delivering investment. We are lucky to have him as our owner. As people may be aware - this is a monumental revision of my previous criticisms of him.

As people may be aware - this is a monumental revision of my previous criticisms of him. can this be pinned to the top of the forum? Only Admin can do that! The monumental revision is down to Wael effectively investing his own money at a time when most Clubs are desperate to cut outgoings. Prior to this Dwane Sports spent cash that came out of the equity in the Memorial Stadium. And I'm not revising my opinion of that. The big difference would appear to be that Dwane Sports is now Wael Al-Qadi. Previously it was Wael, Hani, Sami and Al-Qadi senior. And very little happened. For 5 years. Now things are happening. That is unequivocally good.

I see no particular why so many sports seem optimistic that crowds will return in Jan 2021. They might do but there's no particular reason why that would occur, particularly if we get this 2nd spike that's being predicted for October-November which would set everything back.
I had a bit of lightbulb moment at some point about all of this. At first I was quite optimistic about it all coming back but not anymore, I'm extremely pessimistic about the future of lower league football. I can definitely see a scenario in which next season gets cancelled unless there's some kind of subsidy available. It's not rocket science is it? Professional football without a rich TV deal or fans coming through the gate is just not viable.
Could see all kinds of odd things if this situation goes for long enough. One thing that has been suggested on an FC United forum is the possibility of semi-professional pirate leagues springing up if the EFL can't get going again without fans. You could potentially see that. That would be a very interesting development. Obviously the FC United people would see the idealistic aspect of that with fan groups 'doing it for themselves' and streaming game online. Not entirely fanciful when you consider there is now a core group of those type of clubs that might be able to get something like that going.

A few x Gas then. So FT 0 2 to Glos Robins. Michael Duff has been brilliant at Cheltenham Town.As I pointed out after GC left Rovers.

On balance, I'm not so pessimistic. I think likely we will be starting in Aug/Sep BCD. I heard Dale Vince (Nailsworth United) talking about it and he said it was feasible in League 2. The EFL could then wait to assess if/when it would be safe to play in front of crowds later on in the season. Clubs will be desperate for income. This is the main driver here. I don't think the Govt will help. I don't think the PL will help. The PL and championship will be playing BCD. Logic / finance would dictate that the EFL can't fall out of synch with the top two tiers. Therefore a revenue stream attached to football BCD in Arg/Sep is better than nothing. The technology is there via iPlayer and it's a decent product. Anyone care to guess what pricing model could be adopted? I ventured for Rovers - 5,000 people paying £10 a game = £50,000k per home game. I'd pay that for most games because: 1. I want to watch my football club (even without an atmosphere), and 2. I know it would help them survive.

With the resumption of the PL and the play-offs starting lower down I guess a kind of “normality” is beginning to return to football. Just as the lockdown is being eased incrementally so will the return of football esp lower league stuff. Once the shops are all open and more and more people are returning to work I can imagine that the EFL will be working with the government and the clubs to arrange a return date. It might be sometime in September or the start of October but I think a start time will be announced with caveats and a rational stating something about “if things continue to improve.” The social gatherings on the beaches of Dorset and other places and the protesters most of whom were ignoring social distancing has made it very difficult for authorities telling everyone else to stay 2m apart. I’m pretty sure that the EFL wouldn’t dare tell clubs to get ready without it being made public but I would imagine the league and clubs have had informal, unminuted meetings that would be telling them to work towards a date in September or October allowing clubs some kind of framework of pre-season and training to work towards. UTG!

If I can sit on a bus/train/tube then work in an office/factory then how can the government say I can't sit, or stand, at a sports ground, mostly in the open air, as long as we don't have a 2nd outbreak by Sept I can see a limited number of fans being allowed back into football grounds.
