Not our greatest XI while playing for us, but more before and after their time at the Rovers. Here's what I've come up with...
GK - Nigel Martyn
The first £1m Goalkeeper. Nigel went onto Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Everton winning 23 England caps. Martyn featured in three PFA Premier League teams of the year, played at Euro 2000 and got to a Champions League semi-final with Leeds.
RB - Jim Young
Young spent the 1902/03 season at the Rovers before moving North of the boarder to Celtic. In his time in the East End of Glasgow he won fifteen majors honours (nine league titles and six Scottish Cups). He made one appearance for Scotland and played for the Scottish League six times. (I'll be honest I'm not entirely sure if Young featured in a first team match, Harry Buckle?).
LB - Terry Cooper
Leeds United legend Terry Cooper joined Rovers at the back end of career (flip flopping back and forth over the Avon). He made 250 league appearances for Leeds as well as earning 20 England caps. Cooper won the First Division in 1969 as well as being a runner up four times. His time in Yorkshire also saw him win 2 Inter-Cities Faires Cups, a League Cup and Charity Shield.
CB - Larry Lloyd
I often hear that Gasheads were surprised when Liverpool signed Lloyd and not Taylor. Lloyd however did go onto win everything, two European Cups, two First Divisions, two League Cups, one FA Cup, one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Charity Shield and one Ango-Scottish Cup in a career that saw him play for two of the biggest clubs of the 1970's. Signed by both Shankly and Clough, Lloyd played a mere 4 times in a 9 year England career.
CB - Gary Mabbutt
The son of Gas legend Ray Mabbutt, Gary spent 3 years at the Gas before becoming a Spurs legend. Mabbutt won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and Charity Shield with Spurs and is one of the most popular players in the clubs history. Despite having diabetes, Mabbutt made over 500 appearances for Spurs and was capped 16 times for England.
CM - Gerry Francis
Former England captain Gerry Francis first appeared for Rovers in 1985, Francis coming towards the end of his career played 32 League games for the Gas after a fantastic career where major honours alluded him. He came close to the title with QPR in 1976 and captained England for 8 of his 12 caps scoring 3 goals.
CM - Alan Ball
I think most would struggle to argue that Ball isn't the best player to play for Rovers. The 1966 World Cup winner joined the Gas in 1983, his last club. Ball had won 72 caps for England over a ten year career. Alongside his World Cup winners medal, Ball had also won the First and Second Division, Charity Shield, NASL Soccer Bowl and was an FA Cup runner-up twice. The diminutive midfielder was arguably Man of the Match in the World Cup final despite plaudits going to Hurst for his hattrick.
CM - George Kinsey
An FA Cup winner with Wolves, Kinsey joined Rovers in 1897. Kinsey played for Wolves, Villa, Derby and Notts County in the Football League before joining the Gas and received 4 England caps in as many years from 1892-1896.
RF - Hugh Adcock
Hugh Adcock is best remembered for his 12 years at Leicester City which, saw the club rises up the football pyramid winning the Second Division in 1925 before finishing runner up of the First Division in 1929. Adcock won 5 England caps, scoring once. He won the 1930 Home Championship with his country.
LF - Mark Walters
Wally joined the Gas in 1999 after a hugely successful career with spells most notably at Villa, Rangers and Liverpool. While an English title evaded him, three Scottish Leagues were won as well as an FA Cup, two Scottish League Cups and a UEFA Super Cup. Walters only gained one England cap in June 1991 against New Zealand.
CF - Mick Channon
Channon is another big name player that was brought to Eastville in the early 80's. The Southampton legend had won the FA Cup in 1976 and would go onto win the League Cup in 1985. Channon won 46 England caps in 21 games during a period where England didn't qualify for a World Cup.
GK - Nigel Martyn
