Had zero interest in American soccerball... until I read this. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52308463Got to like that. Rovers related? Tenuous but: "...Mann and four friends founded the club in 2012 - after long nights drinking and deliberating in a basement bar Mann designed around a Bristol boozer he frequented during his time studying for a degree in the UK - it is the fans on the stands who have since defined its identity". And they use a skull motif.

I read about this club elsewhere a while a back. I went to Detroit 3 years ago and I wish I'd known about it then because I would have gone. The ground is in Hamtramck, which is a pretty rough neighbourhood and main historic Polish district of the City. I had one of the best meals I've ever eaten at a Polish-American restaurant in that area. I highly recommend Detroit by the way - a really, really interesting place. I find most US Cities quite identikit but Detroit is unlike anywhere else I've ever been. It's obviously still pretty rough and ready but it's full of really fascinating architecture, history, food, music and art. It's also very affordable and there's a superb live music culture. In 10-15 years time it should be a thriving City again.

In 10-15 years time it should be a thriving City again. Motown, Eminem, Black Dahlia Murder (none my particular cup of tea to be honest), Polish (for Jools) and Detroit City FC... yup - what's not to like? The antithesis of those awful MLA constructs - LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, Miami w*nk FC etc etc. Sorry 'my bad' it's actually Inter Miami... and I quote: "(Inter) Miami is the future—a hyperglobal, yet local community fueled by intersection and interconnection. It stands at the gateway of the Americas and welcomes millions from around the world, creating an energy and culture unlike anywhere else on the planet. Some of us are born and raised here. Some of us came long ago and were embraced like family. And still, others have just arrived. But we all, at heart, share the same qualities: courage, tenacity, ambition, dedication to our community, and a passion for the joy of life". Yeah right.

Think it’s now off the main BBC page, but search Detroit City story on BBC, it’s a really good read, with a tenuous Bristol link. Shows what can be done.

My brother lived in the wealthy suburbs of Chicago but I wanted to see Detroit, mainly due to Motown. It was truly sickening to see and I have never seen anything like it, Dresden apart. It truly was like a scene from an apocalypse movie. It was both sad & really quite intimidating too Not a place you would want your car to suffer a breakdown. I hope there has been money to rebuild as it really was quite something to see .

I was one of the countries top competitors in fencing so I used to go to the public schools to compete and I never once heard anyone call it soccer. Please, look at the history of football and you will find that Etonian old boys basically won everything. I would want much more than huff post to back this. No one I know has ever said are you going to the soccer, on Saturday. Only on my trips to the good old US of A used it. I did enjoy watching my nephews compete in pee wee football though as they allow girls to play, not sure at what age that stops, maybe you could tell me, please ?

What a football stadium they have, a huge 100,000 sunken bowl. A pretty town it resembled Cambridge more than Detroit. On the second night we were on the piss and were persuaded to go to a club in downtown Detroit. Stupidly we went. The club was a huge cavernous place straight out of a Prince video 2am, the lift had disappeared, so there we were, on a dark desolate street, a bit frightened. No idea where we were. I can't remember how but we found a taxi who agreed to take us back to Ann Arbour. One of the more stupid things I have done, there have been plenty.

I can't remember how but we found a taxi who agreed to take us back to Ann Arbour. One of the more stupid things I have done, there have been plenty. Great anecdote and memory. I admit it scared me, mostly when we parked up and walked for an hour or more. There were guys who were blatantly punting crack and heroin. I have never been so glad to get back to a car. When I started to venture, on my own and take the double decker train, into downtown Chicago, I met a lovely Spanish America and we had a thing for quite awhile. She had lots of lovely friends. Anyway, she asked me to meet her, after she finished work & we got together with her 4 friends and went clubbing on rush street. I had no idea that the trains stopped at 12. I ended up walking through the projects of Cabrini green. I had a police cruiser pull up and one say, what is a skinny assed white boy doing around here at this time ? I explained I had gotten lost. They told me I was very lucky to have not been harmed and drove me back to Addison. When I later told my brother, he wad furious. He told me all about the place and I finally realised how it was pure luck that I made it out. I am forever grateful to those cops, it could have been a tragic story. I have walked through many dangerous hot spots & St.Pauls in its dark period was one I used to walk, often. The worst part of Berlin, Kingston & many others. Maybe I am very lucky to have had no harm done. Detroit was the only place that felt so very intimidating to me It would have been 1988 when I was there but we never ventured downtown D town.
