If you had to nominate two posters most likely to turn a 'just for fun' thread, into a discussion on social history. I think Oldie and Bambi would be most people's favourites Be gentle Rex, one day you'll turn into that old bloke who sits in the corner of the pub, sipping from one pint all evening and moaning relentlessly about how much better things used to be. Sure we all had nits and scurvy, no running water and we lived under a dead dog in the gutter, but it was our dead dog, and we were happy. I think I'm already there! Funnily enough, my own upbringing pretty much mirrored what was being said. Me, my 2 older sisters , mum . dad and gran lived in a cramped 2 bedroom house with no bathroom and an outdoor toilet. It was me coming along in 1964 (my sisters are 7/8 years older) that got us a shiny newish council house with a bathroom complete with a loo (outdoor one as well!) As you mentioned, what we lived in then would now be considered poverty.

Aye...and I bet you all used to huddle around a packet of extra strong mints to keep warm. Them were the days....😀

Tim Brooke-Taylor who sadly died of the virus yesterday, co wrote the above mentioned sketch.

Now Then, Now Then, Now Then! Now : Friday Night Dinner Then : On the buses And the sitcom Inbetweeners, like The Young Ones and the very underrated Game On ( Samantha Janus - woof woof! ) with hilarious expressions such as Jism Monkeys and Skunk Pussies! I have watched sitcoms since the 60's black and white days, such as Steptoe and Son ( You dirty old man!) and Till death us do Part ( You silly Moo!) right up to 2020 and the bar's always been set very high. I've also watched the Gas over the same timescale, unfortunately we have, for the majority of that time needed bars, lots of bars to sustain our interest. UTFG

It wasn't the "setting" It was the awful reality of living in large swathes of the UK in the 1960s. It's the same thing Oldie, and that's why it wasn't a problem using it as 'the setting'. In 1 episode, Stan came home, the Mother had prepared the meal, but whilst Stan was washing, Olive ate his portion, so Stan went to bed hungry. The 'joke' here is that Olive is overweight and greedy, but the backdrop was that there wasn't any other food in the house. I didn't notice that when I first saw that episode whenever it was, maybe 1970ish, but of course it's the first thing that you think now; why doesn't Stan phone JustEat and get a curry delivered? Edit. Also, Butterflies is mentioned above. Utterly brilliant, but I'm not sure that was a comedy. It had a few bits of soft humour in it, we see Ria going through what looks like a mid-life breakdown and coming within a hair's breadth of having an affair to try to escape from a life where she thinks she's undervalued and taken for granted. Wonderful work from Carla Lane. Question Was Bread a sitcom? Butterflies had Geoffrey Palmer so it had to be. Remember the cleaner whose catchphrase was the cat had peed on the carpet? Very clever show, with that edge to it. Bit like Reggie Perrin.

Must be Porridge..(just ahead of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads) I think Porridge also passes my Father Ted test, in that no matter how many times I have seen an episode, I can still watch it again.
