www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52120578Fair play to Leeds and Birmingham for doing "something". I have a feeling that unless the Premier League / EFL do something meaningful in respect of footballers pay, then there could be an almighty backlash. I know we are in a crisis because not for the first time, I find myself in total agreement with Sadiq Khan. "Nobody told me there'd be days like these, strange days indeed".

now spurs want to put non playing staff on furlough, game needs sorting financially, wont happen though This is exactly the problem. Non-playing staff (far more likely to be struggling with mortgage payments & bills) are put on 80% of their normal wage. This helps the Club cut down on it's out goings. In turn this makes it easier to pay footballers their full whack of £50k a week. Or £100k a week. Or £200k a week. Or whatever obscene amount they are being paid. It's disgusting. Always has been. Given the heroic work that people in the NHS and front-line services are doing - maybe this will make supporters re-evaluate where their Sky Subscription / Season Ticket money actually ends up?

The Sport and Culture Minister has already spoken to say he didn’t think the government scheme was to help very rich PL clubs. Unfortunately I suspect that legal teams of PL clubs will run rings around the government esp at this time because dealing with PL primadonnas will c9me fairly low down the governments list of priorities. But the minister is correct and just reading local press down here, with Eddie Howe taking a wage cut I think he is trying to shame his players into doing the same. Good luck with that Eddie. UTG!

Yes, PL footballers in particular could actually give up their whole wages for the duration of this killer virus, and still be in a comfortable position when it is over.

So could Eddie Howe, so could the few players who have generously deferred their wages. Just a reminder, £20,000 a week is a million quid a year, once you've bought a couple of expensive cars, a couple of houses, some watches, pens, nice wardrobe, it starts to get difficult to spend that sort of money. No shock that the owner is Newcastle is acting like a total jerk, he always does, but Spurs have tarnished their reputation badly. Let's see what other clubs do.

I mean the senior players could literally give up 1 weeks wages each and that would cover most of the people affected however many times over

Not as much as they lose each year from footballer’s tax avoidance schemes via Nevada trusts or whatever is the SPV of the day for such nonsense.

Probably worthy of it's own Thread. BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52148955 "Premier League clubs to consult players on 30% wage cut as resumption delayed". Excerpt: "The Premier League will advance £125m to the EFL and National League, and give £20m towards the NHS". I'm genuinely surprised. That's a lifeline to Clubs below the premiership. Wonder how much the championship will hoover up? Interesting though. I wasn't expecting charity from the PL.

Wonder how much the championship will hoover up? Interesting though. I wasn't expecting charity from the PL. No epping, I wasn’t expecting that either. I don’t expect too much to change following this CV summer but the National mood will be less tolerant of greedy PL clubs if they continue to take advantage of the government schemes when they were not, originally, designed for PL clubs. Consequently the PL will be doing their best to appear community-minded and trying to give a good veneer of caring. That they have amassed a war chest of several hundreds of millions of pounds and they can do this fairly easily will help them to do this. I don’t expect the whole football cake to be divided any differently after this crisis but the government may well be minded to look at ensuring that the heroes of this are “looked after” and “thanked”. It will be interesting how the those who’ve been seen to be greedy and self-promoting in the past are treated against how the genuine needy and hard working and community-minded are treated following this. Life will be different. UTG!

Please consider that this is a pre-emptive move by the Premier League. The current circumstances and public mood are not conducive to their obscene greed and exploitative business. We, the people, and perhaps the government, will have been coming for them, so it's wise for them to get in first, to contribute on their terms and to limits they set, than to keep on taking and await the backlash. Cynical?

Cynical? Too late already. These guys are seriously wealthy and have been silent. It's only after a huge fuss starts that the scum are furiously backtracking and trying to pretend that they all wanted to do the right thing all along; Wolves captain Conor Coady Jermaine Jenas These people obviously didn't consider the possibility of sending some, or all of their wages to good causes whilst a decision was made that covered all PL players. Being selfish and greedy is one thing, pretending that your not and you were trying to do the right thing all along is beneath contempt.

Cynical? Spot on duck. That's not cynicism, that's realism. What I would like to happen. Revolution - not evolution! Football supporters are revolting . Everyone cancel their Sky/BT Sports subscription. Everyone refuse to buy their Season Tickets (premiership and championship only). Everyone refuse to pay more than £20 a ticket (number picked out of thin air). CV may be the reason that the re-set button is pressed for football. An end to the obscene wages paid to footballers. Wage cap per Club (bit like the rugby)? Absolutely rigidly enforced? Expulsion from the league and £1bil fines for breaking them? But some may cry - "that would mean our 'top' Clubs won't be able to compete against the other 'top' European Clubs". I don't give a sh*t. I really don't give a sh*t. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

Have been amongst a few people saying that Sky have been happy to destroy out game, and our national team, for 20+ years now, suddenly some people agree, but just wait and see what happens, the moment the 'Open' signs go back up on PL stadiums, people will buy tickets and make sure that their TV packages are all sorted and it will be business as usual. Then prices will all go up, because of the losses caused by the disruption, and the mugs will all nod and agree.

Spot on duck. That's not cynicism, that's realism. What I would like to happen. Revolution - not evolution! .... I’d be surprised if Sky wanted to destroy our game and that people think that. Sky, in this country at least, are so linked with football that they will want to preserve it at all costs. Pretty sure that without football there would be no Sky. So much of Sky’s content is linked to the PL. What has happened is that they have changed football from what it is and have created an elite league, the PL. if you are part of that you are happy or at least wealthy, if you are not part of it you are not wealthy. (You may still be happy though!) I suggest that because we are on the outside looking in, and look likely to remain so, our opinions are always likely to be anti-Sky/BT and we will look back to a different age and think it was all better then. The trouble is that Sky want the PL football to be their football league and their competition which we all dislike I think. They have a vested interest in making it successful because a successful PL is a successful Sky. I don’t like that but the clubs have made themselves totally dependent upon Sky so there’s no going back now. If Sky weren’t there what would we have? Netflix, Amazon or someone else which would be not much different. The BBC are just as bad if not worse, albeit free (well, apart from the licence fee). They are equally obsessed with the PL. we see less EFL on the BBC than Sky for goodness sake. Sky will at least know who BRFC are, I doubt the BBC do. The have-nots, us, will always look back to a better time! I think you’re correct about it going back to “normal” afterwards BG, people will continue with their subscriptions. I hope it does change but I don’t think it will for the reason you’ve said. Those who want the service will pay for it. But you make them sound, by calling them “mugs” as if they don’t know what they are doing. I’ve no idea whether you have Sky or not but I do have Sky and like most of the subscribers I make a choice of how I spend my money and if they provide a service I want I will pay for it. They do provide that service and being retired I now have the time to enjoy my retirement especially the cricket in the summer so I choose to pay it. And of course the choice is never as simple as “I-don’t-like-what-they-have-done-to-football-I-will-cancel-my-subscription”. I don’t like the impact of Sky on the old 92 team Football League and how they have divided our game into haves and have-nots. However, that impact has more to do with the greed of the big 5 back in the 90s. Of course Sky have been the body through which this greed has been fed but if it hadn’t been Sky it would have been someone else. If the football-lovers were to cancel their subscription then it would have an impact obviously but not everyone subscribes because of the football. My Sports subscription has little to do with football, I rarely watch live football (I can get enough on the BBC) and only watch stuff on the rare occasions or when we are on (rarer!) But I do watch the cricket and that is what determines my subscription and I know lots of my cricket friends have it for the same reason. I have little sympathy for their position at the moment and hate what’s happened to football on their watch but Sky is about a lot more that just football and for that reason I agree with you: after the CV19 crisis has passed it will largely go back to normal. Stay safe. UTG!

When the Premier League was launched I expressed concern with my friends
It seemed and has since proved to be a very good business product
However it was obvious to anyone surely that the cascade of wages from top to bottom of the professional game would eventually become a millstone for many clubs and unsustainable
While the 'animal farm' pigs in the trough keep taking the money from the likes of sky... bt etc they have had no wish to see the longer term implications
A club likes ours should never be in the amount of debt it is.... completely scandalous and all avoidable with proper governance from the top of the Prem EFL and FA etc
When you add in pundits by the hundreds and agents unsurprising that the sport is struggling with any level of normality
You reap what you sow

I didn't say that they wanted to destroy our game, I said that they were happy to do it, the point being, in exchange for money, they'll throw clubs like Rovers to the wolves and not lose a minute of sleep worrying about it. I have no idea what it would have cost to save Bury, but I'll wager that it was less than 1 day's wages for all PL players. This is the structure that Sky have put in place. I think you are right, I should have pointed the finger at the PL as an entity also. Can you give a good reason why Citeh shouldn't be thrown out or why Bournemouth were allowed into the PL? Both should be expelled in my opinion. But this isn't a competition about rules, it's about money. You feed that debased model if you choose to, I would rather not.

Back on topic, the PFA are now pretending that players taking a pay cut would harm the NHS.
As if the employer couldn't just forward the entire tax that would have been paid to the exchequer, and the rest be paid direct to either charities, support groups or front line services.
These people are truly disgusting.
Add to that, Liverpool are the latest club to dip their hands in to public funds to protect their massive piles of cash.
I suspect that people will remember who these clubs are and this will, rightly, follow them for many years. In fairness, every Liverpool supporters' group I can find on line is saying that they are embarrassed and opposed to this.
So far we have;
Liverpool Norwich Newcastle Spurs . Chairman Levy pays himself £3,000,000 a year. Bournemouth. This mob had no problem finding many millions over and above their allowed spending limit to buy their way in to the PL.
Nothing whatsoever to do with the supporters, but the people running these clubs make me feel quite sick.
