Following from the Favourite player thread here is an idea that might have some legs;
American Sports Fans have this concept of arguing about the Mount Rushmore of their sport/team - ie. like the mountain has 4 Presidents etched in stone, which 4 players would be on your sport/team's Mount Rushmore. It's not necessarily the best players (although it often is) or the ones you most like but the ones you think had the biggest impact. Maybe we could try this with Rovers.
You can make it more complicated by breaking it down decade by decade or singling out specific positons but let's keep it simple and try these 2;
1)Your personal Rovers Mt Rushmore(ie. 4 most important players from the years you've been a Rovers fan). 2)All Time Rovers Mt Rushmore (ie. the 4 most important players in the entire history of the club).
For me it would be;
1)(93/94-Present Day) Marcus Stewart - Andy Tilson - Jason Roberts - Rickie Lambert Stewart is iconic to those final Twerton days and probably had the best career of any modern homegrown prospect. Tilson was (along with Pritchard) one of the few to span 2 distinct positive eras as a key player in the Ward and Holloway sides that competed for League 1 promotion. Roberts gets in because he was a dominant player the last time we were genuinely competitive at League 1 level. Lambert for obvious reasons.
2)Geoff Bradford - Alfie Biggs - Ian Holloway - Jason Roberts These are relatively self-explanatory apart from Roberts, who I imagine most wouldn't have ahead of Lambert but I do because in terms of pure talent and impact he was the best of the run of strikers we've produced in the current era. |

Surely most important players would include players who got Rovers back into the league ? so Matty Taylor for his goals but why Alfie Biggs or Holloway or Roberts ?,Paul Randalls goal kept Rovers in the second tier for a season,what I am trying to say is that for these 'most important players in a clubs history' there must be a reason for their 'importance' ?

I think that's the point though. The definition of 'important' is quite subjective so you get different answers from different people depending on what it is they value or connect with about our Rovers past. People who can remember the 50s might say all the players should come from then because we were far more nationally relevant than we were in later decades, others might say Ellis Harrison because he scored the goal that took us back into the football league and who knows where we might have ended up without that etc. That's the point really - it creates different answers and different justification.
So in my case. Geoff Bradford - Only player to get an England cap as a Rovers player. Alfie Biggs - player who defined an era in the eyes of a whole generation of Gasheads during the period in which we consistently averaged our highest attendances. Holloway - the most iconic Rovers player of recent times etc.

My reasons for this:
RL the goals that we missed when he left and that goal v The S**t in the SF.
SC did everything in his power to drag us out of relegation and nearly succeeded, then had to play for Buckle for a few games. He was everything we needed in a player at that time which again we missed when he left.
TC was a big reason we stayed up last season and is IMO player of the season this time. Should be captain, totally bought into what it means to play for Rovers from day one and the likes of Kilgour and Menayese can only learn from him.
MM stayed when others jumped ship. He was a big character in the promotion season and we might still be there was it not for him. Lee Mansell's name was typed then replaced.
2) Ever
I don't know the early years as well as I should. So I'll go on what I know.
Ian Holloway
Gerry Francis
Geoff Bradford
Stuart Taylor
IH - I once heard a story Ray Wilkins told about Olly that he used to cycle to training at QPR without a seat. He personifies the effort every gashead wants from a player who wears the shirt and his importance in the late 90s is there for all to see.
GF - He played 32 games between 1985 and 1987 so he counts. Cannot underestimate his impact on our history taking us into the 90s in the 2nd division. Paid for a player with his own money. Says it all. Class manager.

3.Warboys/Bannister ..the combination that got Rovers promotion.
4.Lee Brown...the goal against Dagenham.

1. Since 1966: Mansell Lambert Stuart Taylor Lee Brown
2. All time: all the above but Bradford for Brown.
I’m sure I don’t have to explain that Mansell, Brown and Lambert for consistency but also for that one goal that meant so much to the fans. And Stuart for being Stuart.
Thing is if I did this next week it might be different again. So many to choose from but I have no doubt that no Lee Mansell penalty no BRFC in the league. Never was so much pressure on any one man at any one time. I missed most of the 80s and early 90s as an active fan due to other stuff. I always get the impression that football in the 50s, when we had our greatest ever team, was more gentle and seen as more recreational, fun rather than the life and death activity it seems to have become for most nowadays. I’m sure others, even older than me will go for the 50s and why not. Just imagine what we would be saying now if our 2020 equivalent were challenging for a place in the PL.
Great idea for thread irish btw.

Sorry, like father Jack I am going different. Individual players may have shone thanks to others around them, so I will go for teams in chronological order:
1. The team of 73/74 that won promotion, and my first season following the gas
2. The team that played on THE 2nd of May
3. The team that made that wonderful late surge to league 2 promotion/JPT final- Millennium and Wembley
4. The team that pulled together and only meant one season of non-league football

My favourites...Holloway, Hayles, David Williams, Dave Pritchard
Most important (harder to choose over entire history)...Geoff Bradford, Holloway, Stuart Taylor, Matty Taylor...last one hurts but double promotion goals very important in getting us back to some kind of normality...sssss 🐍)
