Alcohol is a toxin that makes you stupid and irresponsible, that clouds the mind and impairs understanding, that makes you careless if not reckless, that numbs the thinking and dulls all reason. I'm having one.

Nice to hear from you again Darlo - hope all is good. Are you still North East based?
It's interesting what captures the imagination. I absolutely know that objectively Lee Archer was at the very best a slightly above average 3rd tier winger. I've also seen 3 England internationals play for Rovers who were undoutedly the best technical players I've ever seen in the Blue and White Quarters - Marcus Stewart, Mark Walters and Rickie Lambert*. I don't think that's bad going really considering, unlike yourself, during my time as a Gashead I have never seen Rovers play a single minute above the 3rd tier. Yet Lee Archer is my favourite ever Rovers player and will always be so and it's not even particularly close.
I put it down to watching my early games in the Family Enclosure in the corner at Twerton and Archer rampaging down that left side. Of course now I know that the main reason for that was Stewart being a genius at playing him (and others) into space but at the time he seemed like a force of nature. He did score the first ever goal at the Mem too which means he has a significant part of our history - snuck one under the illegally crossbar as I recall.....
*I've been attending games since 1993/94 season - I'm pretty sure that Stewart, Walters and Lambert are the only England internationals we've had play for us in that time (I know we've had several other internationals in that time). Stand to be corrected though- can't help thinking I've missed someone obvious......
Fine thanks, Irish. Still exiled in the Arctic waste. One of these days . . . Well I'm also in exile - though in MancLand so not quite as toe freezingly North as that and with far more Liam Gallagher impersonators. Funnily enough I met an eccentric chap at an event a while back who, along with his sister, were the brains behind the reformed Darlington football club. Explained at length the efforts they were taking to get the club back into the town. Something which I think has now been achieved.

Last week's survey gave me an idea. Sorry to pinch it. As many of you as possible reply to this thread with your favourite Rovers player of all time. I will set a deadline to close the vote and collate the results. Depending on responses... No sabotaging, just a name. We can do different subjects each time. Just for fun. 😊 Andy. Mickey Barrett he would have gone on to do do so much more absolute gentleman as well

I wonder what the consensus would be in the other place.

He's not played a game for us yet - he currently still in his pushchair!

Barry hayles. F’ing legend of the highest quality. I’d lick his boots even after a two hour ramble from Weston to Burnham on Sea

Archie Stephens, Down to earth, solid chap!....Another, and although not a player, Denis Rofe, sort of person you would want around at a party or in a crisis!. top chap!. Archie was a superb player, how he floated so long in the air heading a thunderbolt into the net was remarkable.
