Watched the highlights after Waldorf Mannheim vs Sandhausen. FFS! Union 2-0 up and surely safe. To then bloody throw it all away. They might even go down automatically. I can see them losing to a hard working Freiburg and Koln snatching the play-off place. As I said a few weeks back - if you can't get results against Bochum and Koln you don't bloody well deserve to stay up. Union 2-7 on for a bottom 3 place. When Union were 5-1 for a bottom 3 place I bloody said I should bloody well stick some money on it. FFS!!! Bloody hell. It really is a right royal F... up all round, you cannot be losing to teams around you.... Heidenheim have W1, D3, L1 in their last 5 games, Koln W1, D2, L2...UB W0, D1, L4 in their last 5, pray for a Koln draw... I'll have a word in the local and see if I can get the Sky Bundesliga coverage on for Saturday afternoon. It's going to be very stressful...

The way the footballing Gods have conspired against Union Berlin are making me think the unthinkable quite likely to happen. So I just stuck £10.15 on a Koln and Freiberg win (8.66/1). Nets £100.08. If Union lose by one and Koln win by one, then Union finish in the relegation play off place on goal difference. If Union lose by more than one and Koln win by more then one, then Koln finish in the relegation play off place on goal difference and Union are relegated. I have a horrible feeling about this. I shall be watching from behind the sofa. With a Kronenbourg and Aspalls top in hand.

Union 2 Freiburg 1. A 92nd minute penalty (along with Vfl Bochum getting thumped at Bremen) saved the day. An incredibly stressful watch (mate of mine had a firestick and managed to watch the game in German). It's why we watch 'the football'. UND NIEMALS VERGESSEN EISERN UNION!

WOW - What a final day thriller that turned out to be, UB could not have come up trumps better than with their 1st win in a long while, a 92nd minute winner. Staying up on goal difference was as close as it gets, they have to score more goals than the meagre 33 in 34 games. But hey, a big up to 'The Iron Ones'...time to celebrate and look forward to next season.....

Not sure when, but I guess Wehen Wiesbaden are due to play off against Jahn Regensberg in the Bundeliga 2/3 game. From Tier 4 - there are 5 leagues. 3 teams get promoted automatically and 2 unlucky Clubs play off for the remaining slot. Presuming this means Hallescher, Duisberg, Lubeck and Freiburg II all drop out of tier 3. The play off games should be streamed somewhere - they are very entertaining...

Updated list of former DDR Clubs who have played in the Bundesliga: Total 'points' (18 for finishing 1st, 1 for finishing 18th) - seasons in brackets. Hansa Rostock 74 (12) Union Berlin 54 (5) Energie Cottbus 26 (6) Dynamo Dresden 18 (4) Lokomotive Leipzig 1 (1) Rostock have just been relegated to tier 3. Cottbus just promoted to tier 2. Dresden stuck in tier 3 and with big crowds can't seem to get out of it. Their fans don't have a particularly nice reputation. Lok Leipzig in tier 3. RB Leipzig simply don't count. F*ck 'em.

Bayern in advanced talks with Burnley over Kompany..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/3021da55-673e-4842-a2d6-c251569b7acd.jpgBayern Munich are in advanced talks with Burnley over the shock appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new coach. The Bundesliga side believe Kompany wants to join them and the two clubs are aiming to agree on a compensation fee. It is believed Kompany, 38, would take his Clarets backroom staff with him to Munich, including former Wales international Craig Bellamy. Bayern have struggled to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in February. Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany chief Julian Nagelsmann and current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all turned down the job. Talks about persuading Tuchel to stay on failed to reach a positive conclusion, leaving Bayern with a problem. Kompany has built a decent reputation in his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, although the Clarets' relegation following lofty pre-season expectations has not reflected well on the Belgian. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/c8c32306-a57e-4956-868f-38e450dbf443.jpg Former Wales forward Craig Bellamy has been a key figure in Vincent Kompany's backroom team.

It hurts but we must find the positives - Alonso - Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusenichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/2374b3b7-7799-4bde-a0ef-fee1ce383335.jpgBayer Leverkusen had kept their unbeaten run going with some incredible last-minute heroics but that was never an option against an Atalanta side who were in control from the outset. The Italian club ended Leverkusen's hopes of completing the season unbeaten, as well as winning a treble of trophies. "We weren’t able to play as we wished," said coach Xabi Alonso. "After the first goal they showed a great deal of energy and we couldn’t find solutions to counteract that. We couldn’t impose ourselves or fashion goalscoring opportunities." Leverkusen need to swiftly switch focus to ensure they finish a memorable campaign with a second trophy. They face second-tier side Kaiserslautern in the final of the German Cup (DFB Pokal) on Saturday with the chance of completing a domestic double having already secured their first Bundesliga title. "To achieve what we have for a club like Leverkusen is great," Alonso added on TNT Sports. "To be in the last week of the season having lifted the Bundesliga and playing [the Europa League final], we couldn't make it, but then going for the Pokal too means a lot." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/7d8150a4-ed47-49bd-9606-502df3b20c35.jpgBayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso praised his side's "exceptional" record-breaking unbeaten run but said it hurts that it was ended in the Europa League final. The German side have been one of the stories of the season, having gone 51 games without defeat as well as winning the Bundesliga. But their hopes of ending a long wait for European glory were dashed on Wednesday night as they lost 3-0 to Italian side Atalanta at Dublin's Aviva Stadium. It was their first defeat since 27 May last year and, while Alonso was proud of his side's achievements over the last year, he said the Europa League final loss was tough to take. "Atalanta were better than us and they deserve the trophy," he said. "It wasn't our day. We've had a bad night. It hurts that it happened in such an important match." The former Liverpool midfielder added: "The normality is not to suffer a first defeat in the 52nd game. It's exceptional what we achieved and we should be proud. But it's painful."

Saturday 25th May 2024 - DFB Pokal - The Final - Venue: Olympiastadion Berlin
Kaiserslautern 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1 (Granit Xhaka 17, O. Kossounou 44 sent off)
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/25/23/85341069-0-image-a-152_1716676578418.jpg
Report by Michael Emons, BBC Sport.Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen completed the Double as they beat Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final, despite playing all of the second half with only 10 men. Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka put Xabi Alonso's side ahead after 17 minutes with an excellent curling strike from 25 yards. However, Leverkusen had defender Odilon Kossounou sent off for two bookable offences, with the second coming just before half-time following a foul on Boris Tomiak. The second half saw a five-minute delay after supporters in the Kaiserslautern end set off numerous fireworks on a day when the second-tier side were aiming to win the German Cup for the third time in their history - and first since 1996. Substitute Ragnar Ache had two chances to grab an equaliser and force extra time, but shot narrowly wide from 25 yards and also had an effort parried by Lukas Hradecky. Leverkusen, who won their first league title and finished 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart and 18 in front of Harry Kane's Bayern Munich, had opportunities to score a second in a fantastic atmosphere at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Josip Stanisic glanced a header wide and former Celtic wing-back Jeremie Frimpong took the ball around goalkeeper Julian Krahl but was forced wide and could not get a shot away. But it did not matter as Kaiserslautern could not use their extra-man advantage as Leverkusen won their second German Cup, having last lifted the trophy in 1993. Alonso's side remained unbeaten through their entire league campaign and had gone 51 matches in all competitions without losing in 2023-24 before being beaten 3-0 by Atalanta in the Europa League final on Wednesday. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/25/23/85341067-0-image-m-155_1716676689526.jpg

After missing two local games yesterday... was looking forward to the 2nd leg of Bochum vs Dusseldorf (if I could find a stream). Pretty pointless as Bochum had lost the first leg 3-0 at home. But you never know with 'the football'. Gutted I couldn't find a stream anywhere. Sky Sports News for updates. Bochum score. And another. And another, overturning the 3-0 defecit. Extra-Time and penalties. Bochum win 6-5 and escape relegation from the Bundesliga by the skin of their teeth...

Didn't catch it... but Wehen Wiesbaden 1 Jahn Regensberg 2 (2nd leg Tues 28th). So Jahn Regensberg are promoted. Had to look them up on the map - sort of between Nuremberg and Munch in Bavaria. Wehen Wiesbaden just survived one season in Bundesliga 2. Might catch Wurzburger Kickers vs Hannover 96 II May 29th (6pm) before the Europa Conference Final (which I must confess I'm not that bothered about).

Bayern Munich appoint Vincent Kompany as new head coach..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/a809/live/c1b5da00-1e67-11ef-baa7-25d483663b8e.jpgNew Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany on his first impressions: "Well, the first impressions are very good. I've met a lot of friendly people. I know what a big club Bayern Munich is. I am very proud and very motivated to start. The season could start today." Vincent Kompany on the recruitment process at Bayern: "I just joined the club but I had some time to speak to the people inside the cub. I am starting to understand the recruitment process. The only thing I can say is, the fact I am here means they are doing a very good job!" And on his style of play: "As a coach, you have to coach who you are as a person. I grew up on the streets of Brussels... I want the players of Bayern Munich to be brave and have personality on the ball. I want the team to be aggressive. I want the team to represent my character, to be brave and aggressive." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/30/9530928f-a777-4b74-a53f-2e3c59859b24.jpgVincent Kompany on his new players: "I think the main thing is I have lived at this level for most of my career, I have been in these dressing rooms for most of my career. You are always adapting to the people you are talking to. Sometimes you are protecting the culture. Hard work is a common understanding for everyone. "On the basics, everyone knows how we want to approach the season and our jobs... in the main you adapt to the people, cultures and individuals in the dressing room." Vincent Kompany on Pep Guardiola and if he discussed the job with his former Manchester City manager: "I wouldn't compare the two of us [in terms of style]. He was very important in my career and very supportive." On whether this level of managerial job has come faster than expected: "My mentality is I never haven't worked for a top club. The top club is the environment you create. It's the work you do with your staff. The good and bad times define working at a top level. To be here already feels like home. I feel I am in a place where I can continue with this idea." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/30/499d5787-d25d-447b-90ac-0931f62f6e62.jpg

The first move from England to Brussels [to rejoin Anderlecht in 2019] was a first test for them to move. We had some good moments there so they looked forward to the move to Munich." And on pressure: "I have a different way of dealing with it. It is not part of my life." Kompany on winning the Champions League: "The goal for me is quite simple, I try to win every game and it doesn't matter where you are, that is my main goal. The final is in Munich next year, the Champions League is becoming more important. We don't reach that by just talking about it. We have to work and train hard and develop in every game." Vincent Kompany on the surprise around his appointment: "I think the aspect of being surprised is because you assume it is the only club that called and you only assume it because I am a private person. Maybe I was surprised by the first call but it wasn't from Bayern Munich. "For me, I know whatever club you are at you have to be internally on the same line. You have to have that feeling. I felt that and that is why the opportunity was so appealing." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/30/0aed39ce-a6ca-4eb7-8809-ce00d7f02b23.jpgAnd finally from Vincent Kompany, he added this on his two years in charge of Burnley, when he won promotion from the Championship before being relegated straight back down from the Premier League: "The first year you have 46 games, we only lost three games, [and earned] the highest the club has ever achieved in terms of points return. "We knew we were in the bottom three in terms of budget [in the Premier League]. What you learn about yourselves in the highs and lows is that you can be consistent. I wasn't any different from the Championship to the Premier League. I didn't work less, I didn't start the week complaining about players, I supported them. The building was extremely motivated, the energy was there until the last training [session] of the season." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/30/a58c3c06-e4f1-4d76-a552-b6e00804f873.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/795/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/30/bb114082-650f-48d5-898d-685fb4f64675.jpg

Didn't catch it... but missed a cracker. Wurzburger Kickers 2 Hannover 96 II 3. Wurzburger were 5 minutes away from promotion... but conceded a late penalty. So it ended 3-3 on aggregate. A penalty for both teams in Extra Time. Hannover 96 II prevailed 5-4 on penalties. The end of season play-offs invariably deliver! German season (well Bundesliga 2 and Liga 3) starts August 2-4th. Already have the date in the diary... UNVEU.

German football coach condemns 'racist' TV survey..by Jaroslav Lukiv, BBC News Reporting from London.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/30/16/85520643-13472619-image-a-4_1717084500415.jpgGerman head coach Julian Nagelsmann has condemned as "racist" a recent survey that asked participants if they wanted to see more white players on the national football team. The poll by the ARD public broadcaster said 21% of respondents agreed with the proposition. "It is racist. I feel we need to wake up. Many people in Europe had to flee.. searching for a safe country," Nagelsmann said on Sunday. The 36-year-old said he agreed with Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who described the questionnaire as "racist" a day earlier. “Josh [Kimmich] responded really well, with a very clear and thought-out statement,” Nagelsmann said at a briefing at his team's training base. “I see this in exactly the same way. This question is insane. “There are people in Europe who’ve had to flee because of war, economic factors, environmental disasters, people who simply want to be taken in. "We have to ask what are we doing at the moment? We in Germany are doing very, very well, and when we say something like that, I think it’s crazy how we turn a blind eye and simply block out such things." ARD - the German public broadcaster - said it had commissioned the survey to have measurable data, after a reporter working on a documentary on football and diversity was repeatedly asked about the make-up of the national team. The poll was conducted among 1,304 randomly selected respondents. Karl Valks, sports director with the ARD station who commissioned the poll, said the company was "dismayed that the results are what they are, but they are also an expression of the social situation in Germany today". "Sport plays an important role in our society, the national team is a strong example of integration," German media cited him as saying. The current national squad has a number of players with mixed heritage, including captain Ilkay Gündogan and winger Leroy Sané. Germany is hosting the Euro 2024 tournament later this month, and Nagelsmann said his team would be playing "for everyone in the country". They will kick-off the competition with a clash against Scotland at Munich's Allianz Arena on 14 June. The controversy comes just weeks after the team's kit manufacturer, Adidas, was forced to ban fans from buying German football kits customised with the number 44, after media raised their resemblance to the symbol used by World War Two-era Nazi SS units. The SS was responsible for many of the crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis. Members of the SS ranged from Gestapo agents to concentration camp guards. SS duties included administering death camps where millions of Jews and others were put to death. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/19/10/83846367-13327317-image-a-10_1713518481778.jpg

Germany 5 Scotland 1 (even the 'one' was an own goal)! Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles. Germany were very very good. And Scotland were very very poor.
