As someone elsewhere said: ''it is mostly sad, disillusioned, overweight emotionally unintelligent, worryingly angry, drinking too much(white) blokes escaping their humdrum home lives and disappointing close interpersonal relationships (with wives, children, parents, siblings, themselves) for as long as they can possibly manage/get away with.'' Some may disagree. Another example of people posting something offensive just for the sake of it. Try to be kinder. That lasted a long time..

You know it don't you. We should have hand gel at the turnstiles, in case any dirty or poor people have been allowed in. We tried it once but the really poor people drank it.

I notice that some fans chat to each other a lot and for large time periods are not even watching the match

So, we've agreed, nobody on here ever gets even a tiny bit angry or frustrated at football or rolls their eyes at the fat bloke who is shouting his head off and looks like he's about to cause himself a medical catastrophe.
Delighted to be part of the friendliest, loveliest and cuddliest on line football community in the World.
Love you all.

So did we get the origin of that quote in the end?
It sounded like a bitter manager or a player to me. I've definitely heard quotes like that from people in the game. I've never felt people who make their living from the game really understand those who watch them, which is maybe understandable. But I'm not sure any sport has a larger gap in that understanding.
On the other hand I can remember a similar quote attributed to Martin Amis a while back and he was rightly hammered for the snobbery of it.
I don't think it's a particularly profound observation really. ie. it basically says 'some people engage in an escapist activity in order to escape/let out frustration with a humdrum existance'. No s**t. Isn't this something everyone does to some degree? Also, I'd say you'd find people meeting that description in many activities but it doesn't mean they represent the 'average' person doing it. There's nothing unique about football in that regard really. As a cricketer I've come across more than my fair share of fellow players who fit that description but no one assigns that stereotype to cricket.

What do I notice most at football?......The Football. (Maybe the Ref if he is getting in the way of a good game!) Not sure I go to have some sort of debate about what the people next to me or others in the ground look like or are thinking?

As someone elsewhere said: ''it is mostly sad, disillusioned, overweight emotionally unintelligent, worryingly angry, drinking too much(white) blokes escaping their humdrum home lives and disappointing close interpersonal relationships (with wives, children, parents, siblings, themselves) for as long as they can possibly manage/get away with.'' Some may disagree. Certainly, when I look around the North Terrace the demographics unfortunately do suggest that there is a hardcore of older supporters.who are not sad, disillusioned yes, overweight (down to age) yes, unintelligent no (sharp witted) drink to much, sometimes. Escaping mundane home lives not really - it's the one day a week you can meet up with your mates, have a few beers and some adult conversation. If you go back a few years, when crowds were growing at a amazing rate on the back of two promotions and a takeover which promised a new ground and all the infrastructure. So when you looked round the North Terrace what you seen was a real mix of fans, lots of new faces women kids young families and the majority local to Gloucester Road (maj- middle class) The hardcore of older supporters were still there but lost in the crowd, everyone was buzzing. We had arrived and all around the manor was turning blue! On the pitch one promotion stalled when the snake moved to the other side and a disalusioned and let down DC moved on and again recently another chance to put a lot of wrongs right with another promotion opportunity going begging when GC left under strange circumstances. Off the pitch a combination of broken promises over the new ground etc and fake news has slowly desimated the home attendances with all the new fans drifting away. So unfortunately we are back to noticing the older hardcore supporters, myself included and as every week goes by more die (some making it onto the Giant Club flag in the Supporters Bar but either way, currently the club will not attract younger fans in any numbers. My three daughters used to come along to half a dozen games a season have got better things to do on a Saturday afternoon! UTFG/STB

My local Sam Smith's has banned use of mobile phones in the pub and the landlord has been very militant in enforcing this.

My local Sam Smith's has banned use of mobile phones in the pub and the landlord has been very militant in enforcing this. before I moved into one house, I liked the look of the local, where everyone went outside to make their phone calls. What excellent manners, and an excellent way to run a pub I thought! after I moved in I found out that there was no signal inside. Well, it least it achieved the same result

UTFG/STB I disagree with 'overweight (down to age)' being overweight is down to taking in more calories in a day than you burn off. I saw a picture of part of the crowd at Manchester United the other day and it was mainly older white (overweight) men,too many other things for people to do now and lots of younger people watch games at home or in a bar but wouldn't dream of going to a match,I don't blame them as theres probably more atmosphere in a bar. As for people that you notice going to matches,as has been said the p1ssheads (and cokeheads),people who seem to spend the whole time gazing at their phones, people over 12 wearing a replica shirt (the 'funnies'), the people who seem to want to belong to something, probably the ones who post about 'the gas family',and the ones constantly eating pies, pasties, burgers etc I particularly avoid them as they spit crumbs everywhere when they shout and eat,and look like they might wipe their greasy fingers on you if you get too near them.

WHO/WHAT TO NOTICE MOST AT FOOTBALL? - ANSWER: THE GROUNDS! - QUEEN VICTORIA WAS ON THRONE WHEN WE GOT OUR FIRST SPANKING NEW GROUND AT EASTVILLE C1897 WHICH CAME WITH CONCRETE TERRACING AND METAL SUPPORTS - THEN A SHORT SPELL IN EQUALLY PLUSH SURROUNDINGS AT TWERTON PARK C1909 - FINALLY A MOVE TO THE MEMORIAL GROUND C1921 WHICH FORTUNATELY CAME WITH, YES YOU GOT IT MORE CONCRETE AND METAL - BUT THIS TIME CAME WITH A SOFTENING TONE BY ADDING SOME FANTASTIC TENTS.
THIS REALLY SETS US APART FROM THE POORLY CONSTRUCTED MODERN STADIUMS SUCH AS THE EMERIATES, ANFIELD, ETIHAD ...... UGGGGGG UTFG!
