Hey guys, I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate. I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255). Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years. We are looking for the music that Bristol Rovers have run out to, for as many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons Bristol Rovers ran out to this. Any help you can give us to piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would be hugely appreciated. If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic. I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the tannoy system as the players enter the field. If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the project. Thanks for your time guys, Joe Headland

Strangely I can't really recall anything the team run out to at the Memorial Stadium (I'm usually edging along the Blackthorn terrace having just squeezed a last Thatchers Dry in before kick off). For some reason the incredibly tinny, poor quality sound of Del Shannon's "Runaway" at Twerton is the one that sticks in the mind. That was always pre-match, but not necessarily what they ran out to anyway...

Definitely remember 'I Get Knocked Down' by Chumbawumba in the late nineties when Bazzer Hayles was on the rampage

We had Pirates of the Caribbean at the Mem for a while. Very downbeat.

We ran out to the theme from Rocky for years and years (Gonna fly now, not Eye of the Tiger). I can't remember anything other than that being used in the Twerton years and it made the journey to the Mem too. There was even a campaign launched to 'bring back Rocky' about 15 years ago on the old club forum - the club obliged. That's certainly the one that most fans seemed to care about and identify as 'our' run out music.
Definitely ran out to 'Tubthumping' by Chumbawumba for a bit during the Holloway years. I even think there is an interview with Ollie from that period where he talks about how that song summed up the spirit he wanted to instil in his team.....a song about getting so pissed you fall over was apparently a good professional message to send to the players!
Pirates of the Carribean was definitely used.
I'm pretty certain we ran out to 'Singing the Blues' for a few seasons at the Mem. Not sure which version though.
I think Epping's right that Delshannon's Runaway was never used as the actual runout music - it was just always played before the games at Twerton.
Any older fans remember if there was ever such a thing as run-out music at Eastville?
I'll also use this opportunity to have a moan about a trivial annoyance. The 'respect' agenda has killed the drama of teams running out onto the field. They used to charge out to a roar and run to their respective end with the run-out music blaring. That was exciting to me as a kid. Watching Andy Tilson lead the charge out was fun. I imagine previous generations thought the same about Stuart Taylor. Now they go through this weird ritual where they meander out, stand around for a bit and shake each others hand. There's no great atmosphere generated from it. It's extremely lame in comparison and achieves very little as far as I can see. So to me the run out music has become superfluous anyway because players no longer really run out.

One of my fav moments was at Twerton against Tranmere. Announcer said any team that beat City six nil needs a warm welcome. Mark Hughes, ex Rovers, looked very confused as he led the team out to applause.
1989/90
We went on to win two nil.
As above far better when teams came out separately, no music.

In my time we've used Pirates Of The Carribean, Fatboy Slim-Right Here Right Now, Rocky and I believe Jumpin' Jack Flash on the odd occasion.

I've always thought 'run out' music to be a relatively modern thing as in it started in the 80's/90's. I don't recall any "run out" music during the Eastville days.

Run Out music specifically aside, the best 'build you up ' includes Goodnight Irene, Tom Hark, One Step Beyond and Sweet Caroline

In my considered opinion it should not be played. Ever. Unless you were torturing someone who has headphones super glued to their ears and it is played in an eternal loop.

A bit of narcissism from Nick Day?! 😋 We ran out to the happy days theme when we played Oxford at home a few years ago (it was a Sunday game and live on Sky). Reason being that after our game the previous week (away win at Yeovil) DC asked the reporter, when being interviewed on Radio Bristol, how did that lot up the road get on and when the interviewer said they'd got beat DC used the phrase happy days. DC and winnning a football match...Happy Days!!
