Sad. But Bolton and Bury have to go. A harsh lesson for all Clubs that spend beyond their means. Like Bristol Rovers FC.

Seems harsh, but you are right, theses "last minute sentimental dive ins" are not the answer, unfortunately,..... Accrington? i think went that way eons ago, and look how long it took them to resurrect themselves ,

Way back in 1992 another 2 league clubs - Aldershot and Maidstone - were in the same situation and both were gone by the start of the 92-93 season. Both being relatively small clubs with no particularly memorable achievements to boast about, unlike the two current crisis clubs, they were written off as financial basket cases and consigned to history rather quickly. BRFC could easily be viewed the same way by the rest of the football world.

Would Bristol City have remained in the football league under today’s rules?

BRFC could easily be viewed the same way by the rest of the football world. I saw Maidstone play Cardiff on New Years Day 1992. Cardiff had their biggest crowd for 8 years in div 4 as were on a bit of a run and the owner was charging less for tickets if they were lower in the league. It worked. 8,000 expecting a big win with their new signing Jon Williams from Bournemouth a loud big tubthumping centre back the wrong side of 30. Cardiff started well, Williams was making a difference but then disaster. He handled on the line, was sent off, Maidstone won 5-0 (away) and Cardiffs big day was ruined. Maidstone were gone by the end of the season.. Funnily enough, Aldershots last league match first time round was also at Ninian Park.

I make it 15 FL clubs in Lancashire. I concluded some years ago that some would disappear.

Would Bristol City have remained in the football league under today’s rules? the rules were changed as a result of them [ shysters] Serious question...why are they allowed to advertise themselves as Bristol City when that club doesn't exist any longer? By doing so they should be liable for the old club's debts imho

It would be sad to see both Bury and Bolton disappear. They both have long histories and I would hate for us to be in that position. It is the core fanbase that I feel for. Very sad.
The crazy thing is that Bolton, in particular, were in the Premiership not that long ago. How on earth did things get so bad?
It would not take much for us to be in a similar position...

Similarly in Scotland, Rangers aren't Rangers any more, they are 'The Rangers'. Whether we like it or not, clubs are run as businesses(albeit sometimes very badly) and businesses will use every loophole available to them to continue.

So Bolton have discovered it's more than having a sexy new stadium with many revenue streams/opportunities.

Thus the point being you can’t flog a dead horse....it’s exactly that - a dead horse.

The thing I can't understand with BCFC is that the old company had assets i.e. Ashton Gate stadium - which surely should have been sold to raise funds to pay off their numerous creditors. I can see how a new company can distance itself from the old company's debts, but how can it also inherit their assets? Answers please on a postcard!

The directors (and in some instances), the Company Secretary are "officers" of the Company and can be sued for joint and several liability.

Yes, that was exactly my point, although now further down the thread it has been suggested you can go after former directors in some circumstances.
