Kinda just got back.
What a great day, so many Gas and old faces.... welcome back, Banjo!
Hilarious some of the off field funnies....anyhoo, what a pile of pants going forward. No width, one up front (again) and only two moves of note in whole match.
For me.....sercombe (too deep to be effective), bennett (kept giving ball away and easily brushed off ball), rodman (no contribution) poor. Tom Davies and Ollie very good. Little and Leah ok. Upson, why? I thought anonymous alot.
Keeps at fault with first goal, we never looked like getting back into match after conceded.
We play ok when passing sideways, too often when acquired ball on flanks we look to cut in.... making the whole movement narrow and congested.
Again hoofed up to fella on his own. Maybe we were trying to play a 3 up front but because all pushed back it left poor fella on his own whom was easily handled by multiple defenders.
Their number 21 physical sometimes dirty but right handful.
It wasn't a waste of money for me, but too many familiarities with Peterborough last season, and for me, GC got it wrong.
Play 2 up front. Drop Nichols from the squad. Bring in Deon Moore as replacement. Defence ok, two mistakes a match won't always be as ruthlessly punished and I like the centre back pairing.
But GC, this is very similar to DC and changes please.....

Agree.Deon Moore looks class but not even on the bench.Must be a problem but the Guy is quality so mystified as to his omission.GC obviously knows something we don't.

I thought we were the better side in the first half and played reasonably well, but playing with one up front means you really do have to take your chances when they come along. When Little got forward he chucked a few decent crosses in, now all we need is someone to finish them off!

I guess my point is, JCH apart, we've had a this calendar year to rearrange our strike force, all pre season and matches, then we start our campaign with a debutant loanee up front on his own. How many set pieces yesterday? Loads of free kicks and corners....did we threaten? At least once? No... Most were gobbled up by their keeps or easily dealt with by their defence. I just think GC got it wrong. Then when you want a goal out of nowhere, you bring on Nichols.. I went for a long p!ss after that. Game over.

As you say, there were plenty of set piece opportunities which we did not take advantage of, which as I said in my original post, you really have to make the most of if you are playing with one up front. I think we need to start working on set pieces pretty damn quickly or play a more attacking formation. My guess is that GC's preference would be for the former.

Set piece expertise in both boxes wins matches. Will be interested to see if throw ins have improved this season. Rovers give the ball away 80% of their own throw ins. Might as well give the ball and say 'you have it'. Kids stuff. Who is the set piece specialist? Crosses into dangerous areas, 60% conversion from free kick shots, who practices these in training

Hoping I hear the team more expressive to each other too.

Walk towards the thrower then spin and go. 50/50 chance better than standing still

I saw it as bad when we got throw ins. I’m hoping we see a different mindset and do much better

We certainly need to redress the situation. Like stevek192 says, I still hope we may see more to come into the club. I hope for the best but fear the worst but that has been like that, for me in anycase, since our nearly season and that saw me stop going, for 5 seasons. I just couldn’t take it. I consider it lucky that I didn’t have to watch Gray Raydons team. I came back in time for the play off season but was hospitalised on the day if the final. Never been so gutted. The staff were bemused that someone so sick, could be frantic to find a radio. I always feel upset that I wasn’t there.
