I think that this mornings news re Sainsburys means at best we are faced with at least 2 more years of delay but the most likely outcome is that a compensation package will be agreed between Sainsburys and Rovers that will give us a decent chunk of money and of course the freedom to either redevelop or sell again thus perhaps making up most if not all of the shortfall.
We all know though (as do Sainsburys) how important the local authorites and MP's see the completion of the UWE stadium is to the area. The amount of related investment that it will bring in, the jobs that will be created, the land that will be unlocked for other projects, the transport infrastructure that can be developed for the greater good of the region etc etc. This is something therefore that is much bigger than a stadium for Bristol Rovers but we are the catalyst and if we cease to exist there will be no catalyst.
In other cities projects such as these have been undertaken on a joint basis between the land owners, the facility user, and the local authority. For example one I know well is Stoke City selling the old Victoria Ground to a developer for housing (still not built!) for a value well short of what was needed to develop the Britannia. The Britannia therefore became a three way project at outset between Stoke City, Stoke on Trent City Council and the developer. The football club due to their success have long since bought out the interests of the other two partners though. The city council were attracted because the project opened up a vast area for residential and commercial development. This is similar to the situation with South Glos and arguably Bristol City Council, whilst UWE stand to gain state of the art sports and academic facilities and extra capacity.
We are lucky that we are looking to build in South Glos rather than Bristol because South Glos dont have to worry about being even handed to two football clubs and if there is enough vision here there are cetainly great benefits for both them and UWE getting more involved. I am sure Sainsburys see how desperate everyone is to get this built and that therefore they might have a chance to pull out at a reasonable cost to them if other parties have the vision and can be persuaded to step into the breach.

Where does it say a delay? Also, how did you pluck 2 years delay out of the air? I can pluck numbers from the air too...
The story this morning is just that, a story. Its based on information we all knew. Be patient.

Have you actually read my post? In case you hadn't noticed I am trying to look at potential positives from the shambles that we are likely in. Yes thats my opinion too in case you struggle with that as well.

See the UWE article earlier this week, they won't be getting more involved.

See the UWE article earlier this week, they won't be getting more involved. Maybe not but there is certainly scope to persuade them to do so if the ONLY way the thing is going to happen is a partnership along the lines I suggested which enabled Stoke to build. Certainly South Glos have a lot to gain and could consider getting involved if as I say this is the ONLY way it is going to happen.

Always the same. There's clearly problems, loads of supporters see this, others defend the board. Then abit further down the road it is announced it has all gone wrong, but excuses are made, new promises made and off we go again.
Same board that have still not delivered.
If this UWE is not 'delivered' then that's enough for me to join the others who no longer bother attending.

if its all tied in with the £200 million planned investment for the area (as said by babe watch ) surly the government would chip in and give us some cash after all there is an election next year and in and around Bristol there are a few marginal seats in parliament the tories might like to win ?

Yes you are allowed to say whatever you like, but others are not convinced with the authenticity of yesterday's Sunday Independent report, nor you assumption of a best case 2 year delay. You may be right, you may be wrong, but you don't need to be so aggressive to those that don't share your opinion. Like you, I would hope that our councils could show the foresight that Hull, Stoke, Swansea, Cardiff and many others have done in partnering/part financing a quality stadium for their local clubs. As said many times before though, I cannot see it happening.

CW, Spoony clearly didn't read my post properly and then proceeded to take the piss about me making things up when all I was doing was expressing an opinion. So he gets the reply in the style he deserves. Same with you yesterday suggesting that people shouldn't be debating something that I had summarised from the Sunday Independent unless they had seen the article with their own eyes. Easily interpreted as my summary of what was said was inaccurate or misleading and cant be trusted for people to have a debate about. Just imagine if you had stumbled across a Rovers related story in the press and posted on here only for someone (me for example) to reply with what you said. Respect = Respect CW and you will see that I am very respectful in most of my replies or exchanges and not the least bit aggressive. I agree that we do not know the truth about the current situation but I am worried that there is no smoke without fire hence my opinion and suggesting on how we still might move forward if its all about to collapse. I also agree that I cannot see our local councils getting involved with financial help in the same way as they do in other parts of the country but we do have a slightly better chance in that unlike Bristol City Council South Glos do not have to think about any other professional sports clubs on their patch or setting a precedent that would make things difficult with other clubs.

Easily interpreted as my summary of what was said was inaccurate or misleading and cant be trusted for people to have a debate about...... Firstly - I've no desire to fall out with you. I agree with many of your points and I disagree with some. I fear you misinterpreted my meaning yesterday, which means that I was not clear enough. I was not suggesting that your summary was inaccurate any way, nor that the subject should not be debated, just that many others were leaping to conclusions which were not supported by any facts, merely an article full of heresay and what seemed to be like a compilation of the rumours presented on this forum and otib. Although the author of the article is of long standing, he also has long standing support for City. It is in the interests of a sport based paper to sell copy. In the week before the season starts, Sainsburys/UWE and Rovers are the big story that will sell papers. My belief and understanding is that the claims made are exaggerated. If I am wrong, it will be a sad day for us all. Others on here have also accused me of trying to stifle debate, when I simply ask for people not to jump to unsubstantiated conclusions.

It doesn't sell any papers in my house, quite the opposite in fact. Despite the importance of the subject I am bored beyond words by the limited communication from the Board of BRFC, the total non-communication of Sainsbury's and the apparent lack of any kind of tangible progress whatsoever of any kind, despite the efforts of Charlotte Leslie. Put this together with the conjecture of people who do not know, and cannot know the detail of what they are speculating about, but continue anyway, and you may understand where I'm coming from.. I'm just looking forward to to the day when a firm announcement is made on behalf of all parties, and we will all know exactly where we stand, and can move forward accordingly. Until then I'm staying switched off.
