Having attended my first friendly last night I wondered how far we are off having a good team for the standard we are now in and looking at the players in terms of ability to play the division above (League 2). I know its only one game but here is my assessment of the players with the marks for last nights performance Mildenhall 6- No doubt about this mans class and I noticed just how much better his distribution was (but of course this is also down to the fact that the players wanted the ball) Will be up there with the best if not the best in the division Leadbitter 6 - Looks a good player and one who could play League Football. Considering it was his first game for us I was very impressed generally but going have to watch getting caught too far up the pitch. Hes not Michael Smith yet but is probably better than the Michael Smith who started with us under Paul Buckle. Lockyer 7 - We've done well to retain Tom as he has a coolness about him wherever he plays and IMO central defender is his position. Will be up there with the best in this division but i do wonder if we will manager to keep him all season as I can see him playing in the Championship. Parkes 6.5 - Looks a lot fitter and leaner and that can only be good. Still showed moments of lack of concentration which do concern me but overall is a player who should stand out at this level and we know he has the capability at playing League 2 or 1. McCrystal 5 - What you see is what you get and another who should be more than capable of being a top defender at this level but not sure he can play the type of football that Daryl wants us to play. If Turley does come in it will be interesting to see who he replaces but could well see Mark on the bench Brown 5.5 - Another who we know can play at a higher level than this but not totally convinced about him playing in the wingback role. It was definitely good to NOT see him taking every corner and free kick. Definitely will be a top defender at this level. Sinclair 7.5 - This chap looks the business.Covers a huge amount of ground, passes the ball well,is very quick and wins lots of possession. For his size he won a fair amount of the ball in the air as well. One who I can see being well capable of playing League football. Clarke 4.5 - For me was the one player who I have my doubts about being able to play regularly even at this standard. For me he gets lost too often and the play passes him by. Doesn't seem to know when to close down and doesn't read the game. Bench at the best for me. Brunt 5 A player who looks exactly what he is at the present time-A player trying to catch up on a long time out injured. Made some good touches and some poor ones but was glad to see him get in so much play time. Not sure he should start next week but will probably have to for his physical presence. On saying that it was strange but I actually thought Matt Taylor looked better than him in the air. Lets just hope that he can continue to build up his fitness and we could have a good player on our hands. Taylor 7.5 With Sinclair he was the pick of the bunch for me. Could be the 20 goal a season striker we have been after and based on this performance could well ply his trade at a higher standard.Showed intelligent running and ball control throughout and could have finished on a hattrick. Definite starter for next week. Monkhouse 6.5 He could really be an ace signing with improved match fitness. Makes time for himself on the ball and has a good shot. Looks well capable of playing anywhere in the midfield or in the hole just behind the front men. I would say he is also a candidate for Captain. Subs Mansell 5.5 Directs players but I'm not totally sure he is what we need in the middle of the park. Time will tell and it is not fair to judge him on this one 45 minute spell especially just returning from injury. If he is playing regularly then he could be a candidate for Captain Gosling 5.5 Showed good touches but i would like to hear what others thought of him as didn't really notice him a lot when he came on - too many of these beards!!! White 6 I saw something in the short tim e he was on the pitch to tell me that he could well be a 20 goal a season man. Tremendously unlucky not to score a goal with both his header and the shot that hit the inside of the post. I would be considering starting him up front with Taylor next week or could at this stage definitely be an impact sub. Harrison 5 I am hoping that Ellis can kick on this season. Certainly couldn't fault his commitment when he came on but for me one who should start on the bench. Mitchell 4 Sorry but for me my initial assessment would be one to avoid signing and if we do need a bench player to cover the defence but also be capable of playing I would be on the phone to Higgins this week. Looked an accident waiting to happen in everything he did.
Overall performance 6.5 A very entertaining game but not sure just how good Coventry were.Definitely see the signs of a good season here but worries would be getting the right balance in midfield where we allowed their players too much time on the ball and didnt close down quick enough and concentration in the defence. Better balance to the squad and if the three signings are right then I see us having a season where we should be aiming for top three. For me the definite starters for next week are Mildenhall, Leadbitter, Lockyer, Parkes, Brown, Sinclair and Taylor. Definite non starters Mitchell, Clarke and Harrison. The rest IMO depends who we sign this week.

DC says he is bringing in two or three over the next few days; so I guess we should not read too much into last nights line up. We played a coventry side with only four of their first team squad in it, which I thought was about the right standard, a week before the Grimsby match. I am worried we are still not awake at set pieces, although thats something DC can sort out on the training ground. Next week the so called "rose tinters" and "BOD bashers" will need to come together, opinion goes out the door and reality will kick in, lets hope this new team will stand up and deliver three points. How far are we from a good team? No idea. Can't really judge the team or players properly in meaningless friendlies.
Roll on next week.

Fantastic assessment of the game - the only one I could disagree with is Jamie White didnt see much from him to impress imo Sinclair and Taylor though could be quality signings - as for how far we are from being a good team I think we are close, a couple of new faces, Turley being one of them (he was at the game last night) and we could have a decent season. Overall an ecouraging performance that allows me to be optimistic and look forward to next week! UTG

White's record at this level speaks for itself, if he can stay injury free he will score plenty of goals this season.
We just need the BoD to back DC with his signings this week.
Hopefully the OP will keep up his good match/player reviews after every match.

Great to see your report SteveK. I have to admit that a Rovers game isn't finished until I have read your match report. You were 100% right about last season and called it way before Christmas. When SteveK speaks, I listen !!!!!
A pretty good assessment in my view. I have been to all 4 "1st team" friendlies and the style and shape are definitely encouraging and I am quite excited about the season.
I don't think we are far from being a good team, but lack of strength in depth means we are a fair way short of a good enough squad to last the full season. Turley will help but in most areas we are two injuries short of having to play kids.
Been very impressed by Gosling in the games against Gloucester and Yeovil but he was far less effective yesterday. He sat in front of the back 4 in those games and was very effective. Mansell is the one I have been least impressed by.

Being positive, the pre-season is about identifying what's working but also what's not working. I trust DC knows what he needs in terms of shape and fitness.
I haven't seen any of the games but despite the results many fans are pleased with the performance. It seems we are indeed just a few short before the squad is ready for the Banarama conference.

For his size he won a fair amount of the ball in the air as well. One who I can see being well capable of playing League football. One thing I noticed about Sinclair last night, he doesn't seem to have much positional sense coming back to defend in front of the back line. Istm he's great when he gets at the opposing midfield in the middle third, but when we retreated he would often go straight into the back line leaving a massive space for their midfield. He needs to step up a bit more, imo.

I think that the OP’s report is a decent one although I disagree with his opinion on Clarke.
DC has got Ollie pressing high up field so that if one of our attacks breaks down he buys time for our defenders or midfielders to get back and cover.
This didn’t happen in the second half, when he had been substituted, which is why we were more exposed to counter attacks in that half.
I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and well worth the entry fee.
DC showed the fans how easy it is to change from 352 to 442 to 433 in a game if you have practised it and this year we will have at least a plan A,B and C.
The speed of some of our counter attacks in the second half was a joy to watch.
Leadbitter was given a good test by their wide man but his speed going forward and his crossing was the equal of Smudger’s, at least last night.
When we had the ball while playing 352 our wing backs really pushed on, which made Clarkes’ and Sinclair’s pressing contributions vital.
Taylor’s goal was special in that no one from last season would have had the anticipation and speed to score it. The last person I think that we had, who might have scored it was young Stuart Nicholson.
Obviously hard to judge on one game but last night he looked closer to the Chester fans view of him being the conferences best striker than the one shoved out on the wing by FGR.
His partnership with Brunt, injuries excepted, could be good and White was very unlucky with his shot that hit the post following a very good move.
.There were a lot of decent passing movements including the one that put Sinclair through one on one near the end, but the ball would quite sit for him and their defender made a tremendous tackle.
Provided the boo boys don’t get to the players during blips, I think the least we will get this season is enjoyable football to watch.
Sinclair last night showed how silly some of our experts are with their comments about players before seeing them in action. I remember the comment of “MEH” being advanced when he was signed but if he continues to play as last night “WOW” might be more appropriate.
As to whether we are ready, I think that if DC gets the three players we wants his biggest problem will be who to leave out.
As for Coventry their mixed squad of some first team and reserves passed the ball well and did so at pace.
If their team last night is anything to go by, their first team should do well this season providing they don’t get anymore points deductions.

Aa much as I rate Brown, I really don't think he is suited for a wingback role, Turley in for Mchrystal for me also... I think Sinclair or Lockyer will be are player of the season. Happy to see Lockyer play at centre back. Will be a class act there.

(Genuine question) Playing against teams that were more of our standard we looked far more dangerous and competent with the ball, but, a bit like some of the teams we played last season, Coventry threatened us on the break. I totally agree with you on Leadbitter who although did not impress me overly was far inferior to the displays I saw from Ryan Higgins who seems to have been shown the door by the club. We need that playmaker, it could be Monkhouse but I would prefer at least one othe option.

I've seen Mitchell three times and frankly I cant see him being signed,he's not quick, not tall, gets muscled off the ball and his distribution is indifferent.an accident waiting to happen is spot on,Higgins is a much better bet. I like Lee Brown but doubt that wing back really suits him,I remember McGhee playing him further up the pitch without much success. Now the good points. Taylor is a class act, busy, sharp and an eye for goal. Sinclair is a Rovers legend waiting to happen, his desire and work rate is amazing he's the sort you'd want in the trenches with you! Leadbitter is fast, very fast,he looks more like a winger to me but he fitted in like he'd always been here.Monkhouse has quality I can see his being right up there with the assists. Parks is leaner, meaner and fitter,he should excel at this level The remainder all did their jobs ok,even Harrison showed some enthusiasm (and I'm a big critic of his) All in all its looking good, with Turley's signing imminent and another striker being offered a deal I reckon we're close to being a good level 5 team.

Mitchell is only 18 and if he signs he will only be a 1st year pro on £250 per week and won't be included in DC 18 senior pro's. Trey Anderson was released at the end of last season so we are short of a young centre half, if he signs then it's nothing to be excited or disappointed about because he won't be near the first team and will take up hardly any of the budget.

I can't understand why we let Keary go as surely if he's good enough for Bath, he's good enough for us as back particularly if Mitchell looks no great prospect?
Back to the OP I see in their last two games Grimsby have won 3-1 at Gainsborough who play in Conference N, and 2-0 at home to Sunderland, who I assume must have put out a similar team as Coventry did last night. Those results suggest they are ahead of us at the moment DC really needs those 3 recruits this week and hope they "gel" by Saturday, although I assume Turley is still some way from being fit?

I was encouraged by last nights performance, several things I noticed Brown didnt take any free kicks or corners! All the players looked like they wanted the ball (not like last season) The speed of play I preferred tha 3-5-2 formation, looked good. The new players didnt look like new players, well most of the time anyway. Good to see Brunty back but was a little short of full match fitness. Steve Yates has a very loud voice, I shouted for him to give it a rest he turned and smiled, nice to see. Sinclair will be a Gas legend, he plays like Holloway with a beard...... I now have great expectations for the coming seaso. I'll get my coat (not fashionable on here to be upbeat)

Grimsby's first XI also lost to Matlock Town of the Northern Premier this pre-season, so results of friendlies really mean bugger all. They have three players suspended who I'm sure have played some part in pre-season too. Our pre-season has involved a lot of trialists and a lot of moving the team around, last night was our only 'settled' friendly if you ask me.

Hanhamblue,As per my first line last night was my first friendly and my comments regarding Higgins were based on what I have heard from fellow gasheads.

Sorry mate it was a long post and I probably speed read the first bit. I was genuinely interested because I thought your write-up was good but wondered how you thought of it measured against other friendly performances. No offence intended at any point. Having seen the Cirencester, Cheltenham, Bath City and now the Coventry games I can vouch that we are developing nicely and there's a hunger and purpose to the play. I agree with the OP's overall assessments; and also that we should have kept Keary and that Mitchell looks vulnerable. I think we need another friendly fixture next week to tighten things up, and wouldn't be surprised if there's a behind closed doors game. Although there was much to be optimistic about yesterday evening we need to remember that Coventry had two 17yr olds, three 18yr olds and one 19yr old playing. Newport County beat a similar Coventry team 1-0. Coventry themselves probably put out a stronger side today v Stevenage.
