Unfortunately like most football folk he feels he has to speak every time he's asked something by a journalist or a mic is put under his nose. If asked other questions he'll keep on responding and if the mic stays there he'll keep on spouting pearls of wisdom and sooner rather than later he'll say something stupid which will most probably come back to haunt him.

Not at all. Look at the squad we had in 1990. Really small. There would have been the main team and only 5 or 6 others. I'm not going to look it up. I'm on my 3rd glass of red wine and someone will probably prove me wrong, but I don't remember a huge number of changes week to week in that team. Penrice was a midfielder Gerry Francis didn't trust so he put him in attack. GF thought he gave the ball away too much in midfield and decided to try him as an attacker. Jock was a winger I think who changed to full back. We can do well in the conference with the squad DC is putting together. I wish I was in Bristol next week for the opening game.....

For too long Rovers have employed a huge playing squad, we'll have youngsters sign forms for next season that'll be in the squad and can step up and play if needed. We had teams in the 90s that picked themselves as the squad was so small, no need to pack it out with expensive crap.

Great post; I would say GF made some great calls during that period. Putting Andy Reece alongside Holloway was in my opinion the dream ticket. Also, Gary Penrice was as good as any body I have ever seen in a Rovers shirt one on one with the last man and / or the goalkeeper. And what about Pennys goal against the **** at Trashton ? Happy days. UTG

Darrell says in his interview he's going for quality over quantity, heard that somewhere before haven't we? I actually have more faith hearing it from DC than you obviously .. In my mind he actually is delivering what he has been saying ... I'm optimistic it will all come together by next Friday and we can see the promised fruits of his labour

Is losing to Coventry's reserve squad "actually delivering"?
DC talks a good game but so far there's little evidence his players can deliver anything, he really needs those 2 or 3 extra quality recruits this week.

He's building a squad which most have been happy with so far so actions have been louder than words .. He recognises we are 3 quality players short and says offers are on the table for them so again action. Hopefully these identified players will buy into the vision he has sold the players that have come on board already. He has said he wanted a smaller squad of hungry players and has seemingly delivered it. Many examples but guess some only want to find negatives so enjoy the misery the losing to a Coventry reserve and trialist team

I am just a little bit pissed off that our first team loses to a League 1 youth team yes. As we say every pre season it is about the patterns of play, not the results. But our patterns of play includes letting in more goals than we score. I do fear for this season.

I'm OK with quality taking priority over quantity. As long as quantity is still a factor sufficient enough to be called upon should quality fall victim to injury!

Why did he have to say that? Sometimes a `no comment` will suffice. But thank god he cant be related to the last person who came out with that infamous line. Clarke has no money but Trollope was given too much, signed wasters/injured frauds and the legacy is conference football.

Hmmm, you only have to look at our pre-season record last year and under Buckle to see that it's just not that simple. I remember a strong Oxford XI including Constable up front being beaten 5-1 by Oxford City in pre-season last year, and yet they started the season just fine! Pre-season is very odd, I always try to look at performance over result.

Darrell says in his interview he's going for quality over quantity, heard that somewhere before haven't we? That's all very well, and in some ways a commendable thing to say. But we have to make the assumption that all the players will all be giving 100% for 90 minutes in each game, and that we don't get too many injuries. But then again it's necessary on occasions to rotate the squad and players, to suit different formations, and of course to allow for loss of form and (again) injuries.

Let the football cliches roll. Has a manager actually ever said I'm looking at quantity over quality?

I would rather lose every preseason game and start the season with a side who have gained an understanding of each other and the style of play required.Pre season results count for nothing,we have had successfull preseasons before but when it came to the crunch we did zilch, lets see what happens in the first few months of the season before making predictions, btw are you still KS
