Thanks for clarfication on Leach - that sounds more likely but who knows. Somerset have 2 excellent spinners in an era when most countries seem to have none so they do have an embarrassment of riches.
I want to see Clarke bat - he's increasingly getting the England buzz around him. That would be a bad thing for Worcester mounting any kind of relegation resistance though by the sound of it.
Somerset is another strong position v Hants. Could definitely force a result and another win would realy look good.
Lancs seem to have finally done the business v Notts and Jennings has registered a score at the right time which might catch the selectors eyes. My feeling is that Stoneman has done enough so far to retain the openers spot though. Pakistan will not be the easiest series for top order batsmen I'd have though.

With the World Cup due to start soon it’s probably not a very good time to re start this cricket thread but.... England Australia starts in a minute and I’ve just got back from a very good match at Taunton v Nottinghamshire. And Gloucestershire showed they’ve got something about them after batting out the day to rescue a draw from a poor position. The Somerset Nottingham match was an excellent advert for our cricket. Both sides had good sessions and we saw the best from Nottingham on the third day. They really batted well with Moore getting his maiden century. On the third day Somerset were struggling in the field with on a pitch which was like the Taunton wickets of old and from expecting it to finish on the day it went right to the last session. They batted so well that I thought setting Somerset 248 gave them a good chance of winning from a losing situation. Overall Somerset did very well to win though at Tea Somerset fans were very nervous having just lost Hildreth. But Steve Davies came out and hit 4 fours in about 7 balls and with Abell took the match away from them. Last season we would have lost that match. Keeping the same or a similar side has created again a fairly determined and together team that has learnt as it gets older how to fight to get wins. Unbeaten now and next match against Surrey! Should be a very tasty match. Mind you with Renshaw leaving to go back to Australia we are going to be much weaker in our batting, no signs yet of an overseas replacement though there are rumours. Without Trescothick and Renshaw our youngsters will need to step up but it would be a big ask with possibly three under 20s in the first four batsmen. We’ll see. Having seen Gloucestershire at Somerset in the 50 overs when they were robbed by the weather I’m glad to see them showing some fight. Warwickshire seem nailed on to go straight back up and Kent look good after so many misses. Middlesex haven’t recovered yet from relegation whilst Susses haven’t had the Gillespie lift I was expecting so Gloucestershire if they could put some wins together have still got a chance. Others who know them better than me would be able to say with more authority but when I saw them they looked quite good and have obviously got some determined players but it’s not clear who their match winners and players who are going to make a big difference are. Hope they do well.

If Glos can pickup a couple of wins at the Cheltenham festival they could get themselves in the hunt for that 2nd promotion spot - they've not done particularly well there in recent years though.
That was a big win for Somerset - games like that make you think that it might be their year. I think that was an impressive run chase in the circumstances. Notts have a long history of turning games around from losing positions and it looked like they might do it again - I'd love to say that Tom Moores is an example nepotism but, I have to be honest and point out that I've been pretty impressed with him every time I've seem him play. He has that classic battling wicket-keeper quality about him. They may have found the replacement for the massive hole Chris Read left. Nevertheless, I'm sure Jack will point out that they are up to their usual tricks of nicking all the promising players from more successful academies around them - Leicester yet again being plundered. Feel sorry for Leicester particularly - they are clearly doing something right in player development but as soon as they get a quality player Notts take them. Not sure what you can do!
I went to 2 days of Lancs and Essex this week. Best Championship match I've seen this year. One point to make is that Lancs deserve huge credit for their pricing at Old Trafford this year. It's £10 for a day's Championship cricket and they've been rewarded with decent crowds. On Sunday, at one stage Onions and Bailey (test player and increasingly looking like future test player) bowling at Cook and Westley (legend in the making and recent test player) and it was very high quality stuff from all. I'm not sure there's better value entertainment for the quality you are paying for anything really! Cook batted brilliantly and was looking like cruising to 100 with Westley going well too but Mennie (the Lancs Aussie who's been quite average before) and Onions came back after lunch and bowled an inspired spell which swung the match in Lancs favour. It was well poised overnight and more or less level pegging at the end of the first innings. However, Porter really is a terrific bowler and he just tore through the Lancs top order - it was hard to say they did a lot wrong. It was precision bowling. Harmer mopped up the tail. 105 was never going to be a big enough target but, again, Onions had Essex wobbling big time with 4 quick wickets before Bopara and Ten Doeschate (now banned for gobbing at umpires) took Essex over the line. Really good game with pendulum going one way then the other. Porter and Harmer again showing why Essex won the Championship last year. Despite all that though the much heralded Lancs team are finding themselves at the wrong end of the table. They are more fun to watch than in previous years, and I like that they are now picking Parkinson regularly, but they are definitely a bit soft. Not been great in white ball stuff for a while either now - big changes coming at Old Trafford I think unless they have a much improved second half of the season.

Saw a couple of days of the Somerset match at Surrey, unfortunately but have to say Surrey looked good and the youngsters they have look very good. To have Foakes and Ollie Pope as keepers makes them very strong in that department. The championship is still very open though I think Surrey look to be in the driving seat not least because of the depth they have to call on. But as it was our first defeat I won’t get too depressed because we were without Overton and others. But I think we are short of some experience in the batting department. With Renshaw now injured and going back to Australia, Leach forced to miss the next match due to his concussion we are going to be short of batters. Leach will be a miss but van de Merve can cover Leach. Surrey will be favourites to win now they are turning some of the draws into wins. Table is still very close and with Worcs winning it’s given them a chance to close the gap further. One of the good things that seems to have happened over the past couple of years is the resurgence of spin bowling. A few years ago it looked an area which was sparse in terms of quality but over the past couple of years we have seen some real talent emerging. Obviously I’ve seen Leach and Bess emerge at Taunton but Mason Crane with Dawson at Hampshire, Carter at Notts, Parkinson at Lancs, Verdi and now Patel at Surrey come straight to mind. I’m sure there are others but these have made the headlines and will all be competing with Rashid for places in the England set up. Apologies to players and counties that I might have missed! I haven’t even gone into the second division but perhaps others know more about spin in that league. The counties seem to be producing spin bowlers which has got to be a good sign. I stand by what I said earlier about going into September and thinking we could win the Championship but still be in danger of getting relegated. Although I’m glad at this point in time to be looking wrong about Hampshire really competing for the Championship. They seem to have got themselves into some strong positions but have been unable to turn them into wins and are now looking at the foot of the table and not the top. Lancs seem similar, had a couple of good days against Worcester but still lost. They are not as strong as I thought they might be. Still there is a long way to go and not even half way through the season so counties have time to turn things around. September is going to be a very exciting month for those of us still interested in Championship cricket.

September is going to be a very exciting month for those of us still interested in Championship cricket. I'm pretty sure Lancs are going down - they have looked weak in pretty much every game I have seen and never seem to press home advantages. They have good individual performers but as a team they seem disjointed with bad body language and they make strange selection and captaincy decisions. This week was a good case in point. Coming off a bad defeat to Worcester they decide to pick Parry and Lilley and leave out Parkinson. So they have gone with 2 spinners and neither are the guy who looks like a match winner. It just gives the impression they don't know what they are doing. They have picked this guy Lamb who, with respect to him, has not looked like he is ready for Championship and won't pick Lester who is left-arm, did well last year and is taking wickets in the 2nd XI. I think something is quite wrong there and I can see a clean out of senior management at the end of the year even if they stay up which right now I'm not sure they will. I went to Day 2 of the Hampshire game - as with a few other occasions this year, they had the opposition in a bit of trouble but let them off easily through leaking runs and a general air of disinterest. Quite a baffling side -glad I don't support them! I'll be disapointed if they go down though purely because I'd like to see Div 1 cricket ideally but if they play Gloucs next season then that is a nice trade off. They've felt like a county that needs a kick up the backside for a couple of seasons now - in danger of being this season's Warwickshire I think. Surrey just seem to have stepped it up a notch in these 2 weeks and I think they have made it their Championship to lose now unfortunately heading into the business end of the season. Dull! It is interesting that we are producing spinners again and somewhat belies some of the negative criticism around the Championship too early (even though it definitely does!). Vardi seems a particularly exciting prospect/

Yes Lancs don’t seem to be firing at all. Must admit was surprised at Parkinson not playing but he was playing for England Lions with Livingston and was probably needed by Lancs! I don’t think they’ll go down but with 2 out of 8 to go I don’t think any team will be truly safe until after the last match. And if your spirit isn’t right then you become even more vulnerable. Has Vilas scored any runs since his double century against Somerset early on? Don’t think he has has he? You’re right about Surrey, unless they mess up I suspect they will make it as easy as Essex did last season. As far as Somerset are concerned it was good to see Bess play well at Chelmsford on a great wicket and keep the runs down before the second innings wickets. With Leach back our attack will be stronger esp with Overton back from England duty. But we will continue to be vulnerable on our batting with too many youngsters and missing the foreign import now Renshaw has gone home. At least we appear a fairly strong squad mentally coming back well after the Surrey thrashing and the Essex first innings. Abell seems to be doing well as captain and we do have a fighting spirit! Worcestershire seem to be making a great fight of it. Surviving with a draw against Notts was a great result for them with Joe Clarke showing his real talent. Whilst Surrey seem unbeatable the rest all seem able to lose or beat each other.

Spent last night at the Ageas watching the 20/20 match Hants v Somerset. Somerset bowled very well against a poor, fairly unmotivated Hampshire side. Both captains used their bowlers well but I got the feeling that Hampshire being unable to qualify just went through the motions. Fairly good crowd in esp as it was on TV as well. For the first time in 3/4 years I thought Somerset looked a very good 20/20 team with a few players in good form and a good balance in the bowlers. I don’t expect Somerset to win it as we’re not even sure of qualifying because it’s so close in the Southern Section. Wouldn’t it be great if both Somerset and Gloucestershire got through to finals day and avoided each other in the semi finals and set up a final between us?

Both are definitely due a final day appearance.
I saw the insane T20 Roses Match a few weeks ago at Old Trafford. 360 runs were scored in a game reduced to 14 Overs a side. Lancs going quite well in that competition but have come slightly unstuck of late and now the quarter final spot is in the balance. Will probably go on Friday to their key games vs Warwicks (or 'Birmingham Bears' as they are now known - couldn't they sue Steve Lansdowne for copyright....).

It is interesting that we are producing spinners again and somewhat belies some of the negative criticism around the Championship too early (even though it definitely does!). Vardi seems a particularly exciting prospect/ Long time ago now and lots of water under the bridge but... Was at the Som v Lancs match last week for all of it, all two days. Lancs couldn’t believe their luck right at the end. But for the whole of the first day and up until the last hour and a half on day two Lancs were poor. When they had Somerset in trouble in the first innings Gregory came in and took the match away from them and with a lead of 93 we should have won. We batted for 90 minutes like rabbits in headlights but it doesn’t hide the fact that Lancs were poor. I’ve seen enough of us to know that our second innings was very unlike us this season. Talking to a few Lancs supporters I think it was a normal performance from them. Strange after they played really well at Southport to beat Worcs. Also went to the Ageas to see Hants v Som. Now that was over in two days as well. Poor pitch with variable bounce, which at times was dangerous. 19 wickets on the first day and 34 wickets by 3.30 on the second. Yet nothing was said, no pitch adjudicators or anything. I wonder why? That pitch was prepared for Abbott and Steyn and they bowled well and on the second day they were unplayable. Best 2 hours of fast bowling I have seen in person over 55 years of watching cricket. Unplayable but being really snotty I went to see Hants v Somerset not SA v Somerset on a pitch prepared for their fast bowlers, but that’s what I saw. Yes I know people say we prepare Taunton for our spinners but we have all the adjudicators over us like a rash, Hampshire.... nothing. That’s my point. And in the Lancs match at least 6 of the Lancs batsmen played swipes and bad shots, it wasn’t the wicket. We weren’t much better. Well done Surrey, totally deserved County Championship. Best team and full of English players, well done and great respect to them. Interesting to see who will go down, think it will be Worcestershire and Lancashire. I don’t think Onions, Jennings and Buttler signed up for that!!😉

Well I guess I got something right for once! I suppose some in the game would suggest there's a certain poetic justice in what happened to Somerset v Lancs given the pitches they've prepared for Leach and Bess in recent years. Lancs need to rip it up and start again - I have it on fairly good authority that the main issue is Paul Allot, who is perceived as toxic by players and coaches apparently; I don't know why though. But I could definitely see him and Chapple both going and an outsider coming in to shake things up a bit. I think going down might be good for some of Lancs players- they do have a core of promising young player who would probably benefit from spending a year developing against Div II teams. Hameed particularly needs a confidence boost but it will also gives the likes of Parkinson, Bailey and Toby Lester to create a new core squad. Can't believe Surrey took Jordan Clarke off the - odd move that especially when they went after Plunkett as well. I don't particularly rate clarke but I suppose he's been signed to replace namesake Ricki. Once again Somerset flatter to deceive though - I'm not sure any county team has ever been as consistently competitive over such a long period without winning anything. They are the master of Runners Up spots and Semi Finals. It is amazing to me that their last trophy was the 2005 T20. Brooks is a good signing though and on a related note it's not looking great for Yorkshire going forward - they seem to haemorraging players.

I wonder whether a season in division two might actually benefit Lancs in the long term? Players like Hameed, Mahmood and Parkinson might get a bit more game time and form playing against weaker sides. I was certainly surprised to see Maharaj playing for them on a short term contract instead of Parkinson a few weeks ago.
On paper, Worcester look like they'll finish well a drift but I can think of a number of games where a bad session cost them. I think the bowling attack looks stronger now than it did at the start of the season. The magoffin signing hasn't really worked out and the extra pace that Parnell has given them is what they really needed close season. He's a left armer too and I think he's a great signing. Add Leach who has missed half the season with injury to Pennington, Barnard and Tounge and I reckon that is a quality seam attack.
The batting has been the problem though. They've lost a couple of games in the first session of the first day. They need to find a couple of reliable batsmen either from outside or from within. Their best performances of the season have been based around the batting of Clarke, Moeen and Mitchell but they've either been unavailable for much of the season or hit and miss. Averaging 40 with a couple of hundreds is decent but not enough to carry a batting side. It sounds like Joe Clarke is off to Notts which won't help. As always though there are a couple of young players coming through and I expect Worcester to sign an overseas top order batsman next year. At some stage I really do think this side will survive and thrive in division one. The proposed change to a 10 team first Division might help them do that.
The one day campaign was obviously a highlight. It's funny how often the least fancied side comes through to win finals day. Really pleased for Ben Cox, especially after the heavy handed way he was left out of the championship game the week before. He's got to be one of the best keepers in the country and in another era would be close to the England side.
I thought Gloucester had a promising season until they lost Norwell and especially Miles. They've been inconsistent but they seem to have some batsmen coming through the ranks which is really encouraging. And then the news broke about the departures and you wonder what the point is. Worcester have lost one of the most promising young players of his generation. Fine, I think small counties can live with that. But when you lose a couple of run of the mill bowlers it grates.
Time for some kind of remuneration system for young, home grown players I think.

Brooks is a good signing though and on a related note it's not looking great for Yorkshire going forward - they seem to haemorraging players. Yes irish they may well say Somerset got poetic justice against Lancs for the pitch. INterestinly though despite being on a warning the ECB didn’t punish us. Lancs inept display was more to do with poor shots and poor selection. Our batsmen froze and just looked like rabbits in headlights for 90 minutes in the second innings, but we’re used to that with Somerset! We produce that pitch and the ECB pitch adjudicators are all over us like a rash, a week later at the Ageas Hampshire produce a fast pitch to support their bowlers and on the second morning Abbott and Steyn were unplayable and were actually dangerous with the uneven bounce and nobody says a thing! Last season we had Angus Fraser moaning about the pitch, this year we had Allott out in the middle at Taunton waving his arms around moaning about the pitch. It certainly causes us problems but we are used to that. We all thought Lancs might have done better if they learnt not to play back to full balls and avoided swinging wildly, something for the coaches I would have thought. Similar pitch this week but Surrey showed everyone how to play as did Hildreth and Ali in the second innings. Think you might be right about Lancs irish, pretty sure Jennings and Onions didn’t join them to be relegated in their first season. Have seen every ball of our last three championship matches and we weren’t good enough, Surrey were the best team by a mile. Though why they need Clark and Plunkett I’m not sure. Brooks will be a good signing I think and will be a good addition. We need a batsman to come in and give us 1000 runs as I doubt we will get Renshaw for the whole season, he will be needed for the Aussies I would imagine. Sad to see Worcestershire go down and if they lose Joe Clarke to Notts that will be disappointing, I hadn’t heard that. Blimey what is it about Nottinghamshire, don't they have an academy system? Both Slater and Duckett and now Clarke. It appears laziness, their inability to develop their own players and just “steal” or cherry pick from Northants or Leicestershire or Derbyshire and now Worcestershire. But at least they won finals day which after Somerset lost I was pleased about.
