Saturday 20th April 2024 - League Two
Notts County 1 (Langstaff 54) Colchester United 0i2-prod.nottinghampost.com/incoming/article9131967.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_AERIAL40.jpgMacaulay Langstaff's 28th league goal of the season means Colchester are still not safe as they lost at Notts County. The visitors almost took the lead early on when Ellis Iandolo's speculative effort from distance almost caught Luca Ashby-Hammond off guard, the keeper tipping the ball onto the woodwork. It was the Colchester full-back involved once again minutes later, producing a last-ditch tackle to deny Langstaff an opportunity to shoot inside the area. Jodi Jones saw his effort clip off the crossbar, with Cameron McGeehan found unmarked inside the box at the other end but heading straight at Ashby-Hammond. The hosts continued to create the better chances, as Crowley saw his effort blocked on the line by Riley Harbottle seven minutes after the restart. But County's pressure would pay two minutes later when good work between Aaron Nemane and Crowley was finished off by Langstaff, putting the ball in off the crossbar. Harbottle almost secured the away side a point late on as his header came off the post, with Colchester now three points ahead of relegation rivals Sutton who conceded a late equaliser to Crawley.

Saturday 27th April 2024 - League 2
Forest Green Rovers 1 Notts County 0
Charlie McCann's second-half strike ensured already-relegated Forest Green finished their campaign with victory over Notts County.
Steve Cotterill's Rovers posted back-to-back wins as they ended their seven-year tenure in the English Football League with a second consecutive demotion.
The Magpies bossed possession, but it was former Forest Green defender Aden Baldwin who had to be on his mettle to block Christian Doidge's strike.
Strong hands from Vicente Reyes saw the Norwich loan goalkeeper pounce on Jim O'Brien's powerful effort as the industrious Dan Crowley carved Rovers open in the 22nd minute.
The tenacious Crowley floated a ball to the back post, but County captain Kyle Cameron was profligate in his placement.
Crowley then fizzed wide on the cusp of a turgid first half.
After the interval, McCann saw his strike inside the box blocked as Rovers looked to break the stalemate.
Rovers missed a gilt-edged chance to take the lead with 23 minutes to go. County keeper Luca Ashby-Hammond dithered on the ball, but Jamie Robson lifted his effort over the crossbar.
However, the hosts found a winner in the 74th minutes when midfielder McCann finished with aplomb inside the box.

O'Brien & Bostock among six released by Notts County..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article29512026.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-102909883.jpg John Bostock was once a generational talent in the English systemSix players involved in Notts County's promotion from the National League in 2022-23 have been released by the League Two club. Hugely experienced ex-Celtic midfielder Jim O'Brien, who was placed in interim charge along with first-team coaches Tom Weal and Joao Alves when former manager Luke Williams left for Swansea City in January, is leaving after more than five years. Right-back Richard Brindley also joined the club in 2019, while midfielder John Bostock, whose former sides include Crystal Palace and Tottenham, will also not have his deal extended. In an open message to fans on Sunday, Brindley said his "one objective" during his "memorable" time at the club had been to achieve promotion. "There are some talented players and great people behind the scenes who I am grateful to have crossed paths with, winning many games and fighting for promotion," the 30-year-old added. Defenders Aden Baldwin and Tobi Adebayo and 20-year-old forward Luther Munakandafa, who has been repeatedly loaned out since 2022, will be departing. Goalkeeper Aidan Stone, defender Connell Rawlinson and winger Will Randall have been transfer-listed, but Geraldo Bajrami has been offered a new deal and Notts have taken up a one-year extension on Cedwyn Scott’s terms. "We kind of know where we need to strengthen and what we need to bring in," Magpies manager Stuart Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham after his side's closing 1-0 defeat at bottom side Forest Green Rovers on Saturday. "It's about identifying players and making sure we can be stronger defensively and combat the opposition." Former Wealdstone boss Maynard has won five and lost 11 of his 19 games, guiding Notts to a 14th-placed finish.

Notts County's new captain Macaulay Langstaff signs for Millwall for undisclosed fee..By Sam Allen, Football writer.i2-prod.nottinghampost.com/incoming/article9396635.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_JS312999555.jpgStar striker Macaulay Langstaff has departed Notts County to move up to the Championship with Millwall for an undisclosed fee. The 27-year-old had been appointed the Magpies ’ new club captain this summer after another Golden-Boot-winning campaign with the club, but that could not fend off the interest from a club two divisions higher. The widely-reported fee for the transfer is £700k plus add-ons for Langstaff, who had an astonishing goal return in his two seasons with Notts. Singing from Gateshead in 2022, Langstaff netted 71 times in 97 appearances, including a record-breaking campaign in the National League which powered the club to a long-awaited promotion back to the EFL. His 28-goal return in League Two earned him a place in the league’s official Team of the Season as well as the Golden Boot in what was his first-ever year in the EFL. This move to Millwall will be the steepest jump that Langstaff has made in a quick rise to prominence of the last few years, but he is unlikely to be fazed by the challenge with the translatable skills he possesses as a forward, outside of his goals. While there is an obvious disappointment from Notts’ end to lose their talismanic striker, they believe the value of the deal agreed for his transfer protects them for the future as they reinvest it into the squad. Part of the directors’ statement read: “We’re incredibly proud of what Macaulay has achieved in his time at Meadow Lane and wish him every success as he commences this exciting new chapter in his career. He thoroughly deserves this opportunity and has our utmost support moving forward. “While we share our fans’ disappointment that we won’t see Macaulay in the black and white next season, we’d like to reassure them that this deal represents excellent value for the club – and that we have, of course, been factoring his potential departure into our plans as we look to build a highly-competitive squad this summer. “We should also all take collective pride in the part we’ve played in giving Macaulay the platform to step out of non-league and move into the second tier – a trajectory that only reflects well on us as a club.” Head coach Stuart Maynard saw enough in his few months working with Langstaff to ask him to be the captain of his team moving forward. However, there remained a sense of inevitably regarding a future departure with Maynard now placing his faith in others to pick up the mantle. He added: “While we would have all loved to have kept him, his goal return was always going to make that incredibly difficult and it wouldn’t have been right for anyone to stand in his way. “I’ve no doubt Macca will be a huge success at Millwall. He brings so much more than just goals – he’s ferocious in the press, tactically astute and a leader, hence my decision to give him the armband. “He will, of course, be a big miss for us – but we have lots of talented attacking players in the squad who are ready to step up to the plate.”
